The morning we leave Swan Hill for Cohuna begins with bacon and eggs while we listen to our slightly rowdy neighbours, a flock of corellas feeding just outside the caravan. Cohuna is a town that we have driven through many times on our way to the Australian snowfields but we have never stopped for longer than a petrol fill. So this trip we decide to stay and have a look around for a couple of days, just to see what is here. The Gunbower Island caravan park sounded promising and we are delighted with our site facing the wetlands of Gunbower Creek. Looking at the black swans and pelicans gliding past we wish that we had packed the kayak. We have a waterbird paradise right outside our door. After setting up we decide to walk into ... read more

A sleep in to 8.00am yahoo! The first lesson or talk that I was interested in was at 10.30am. So I had made a slow start to the day and went for a bird watch by myself down to the Gunbower Jetty. When I pulled up in some shade I looked to my right over to the river to see a large bird sitting amongst the willow branches. Which I assumed was a bittern of some short; I quietly got out of the car with camera in hand and crept closer to get some descent pictures all the time thinking I need to get back to the hall to let all the other twitchers know. One more step forward for one more picture I thought, but no the bird took off, I had got too close. ... read more

Well most of today was spent updating the blog entries (today is the 2nd of November so another day blogging!). This takes time as I first type them in a word doc, for spelling etc, then paste them into the blog sit, add the photos and edit there order and names, then make the map. Photos first get down loaded of the camera, the ‘good’ one are chosen, edited and saved into a separate folder. After catching up with two word doc’s it was lunch time so I walked into Gunbower for some lunch at the Road House come Corner Store and Newsagent. I had a huge chicken schnitzel sandwich; mayo, chicken, lettuce, tomato (!!!!), fried onion and cheese. Then it was back to the cabin and more typing. At 3.00pm I had another break with ... read more

This morning I was up early, 7.00am, to be ready for the first activity at 8.00am. Previous to this I had been waking up at 8.30am without an alarm so it was a little jarring to be woken by an alarm again! I thought I had set the alarm to radio (yes triple J!) but instead I got a buzzer! I soon hit the off switch. It was a little over cast but pleasant. This did not last long; the group I was with were out beside the Gunbower Creek at Cockatoo Lagoon bird watching when a light drizzle started. Luckily some people went and put on rain coats which stoped the rain until we got back to town for morning smoko. After smoko it poured down! Luckily I was inside listening to a talk on ... read more

A lovely day dawned so I choose to do bird watching over any indoor learning. Especially after the mind boggling effort of editing packages yesterday! First, with a large group of likeminded people, we went up to Cohuna and out to a forested area beside the Murray River on Gunbower Island. A couple of Red-capped Robins fighting, lots of White-wing Coughs, Nankeen Night Herons and Sacred Kingfishers were some of the bird we saw. There were also pockets of hoppers! It was a little bit ‘biblical’ on a small scale. Back in Cohuna we stopped near the caravan park for morning tea and a look at the Gunbower from the Island Rd. On the way back to Gunbower via the Island Rd we stopped off at a picnic point for a walk through some more Black ... read more

Still wet, we heard at the end of the day the area had around 50ml of rain. I attended the morning workshops about photography for beginners and choosing the right equipment or as some of were calling it ‘the horse has already bolted’! We learnt that we should be happy with what we have and learn to use it to it full capacity and then if it’s not doing what we want then up date. After lunch, which I went back to cabin and prepared myself, it was a very heavy session on photo editing packages! We were shown the same photo edited for the same results in four different applications. Adobe Photo Shop, Gimp, Paint Shop Pro and another I have forgotten the name of. I felt like I was drowning sometimes it was quite ... read more

To get to Gunbower I could go down the Cobb Hwy to Echuca or a more scenic tour through the Millewa State Forest. To get to the Millewa Rd I had to go out off Deniliquin to the west and then down through farming country on the Aratula Rd. I saw one large Breaded Dragon, looking like a piece of bark until I went to get out of the car to look at him then it was gone! And one black coloured snake, not sure what it was as by the time I swerved to miss it and then turned around to look at it, it had slipped away (no I was not going to get out and pick it up! Just wanted to see what it was). Once on the Millewa Rd I was in ... read more
