This blog is 30 years in the making, I have turned 60, and it was exactly half my life ago that I assembled a travelling party of four to cycle to Alice springs, this is my story. The group consisted of my very good friend Colin Harvey who I had met on a previous ride at a chance meeting in Armidale NSW, Bruno who worked as a bike mechanic at Bill Mannings Cycle shop in Lilydale, Kirk Hurran a good friend and of course yours truly Daryl James Thompson, a veteran of many rides over the last few years. We had trained hard and conducted a lot of research for this journey as to where we were going, in particular the gruelling Oodnadatta Track in Northern S.A. Saturday morning had arrived, it was the first day ... read more

Volunteering The Last Chapter. Volunteering - was it easy? No way. The cold showers (I’ve only had one hot shower since arriving here), the lack of water pressure, occasionally no running water for a number of days, the occasional blackouts, dusty roads, dodgy internet connections, language barriers, lack of the creature comforts we take for granted and of course leaving your loved ones and friends behind. All these factors make it hard work. Would I do it again? Yes I would. Even through all the discomforts and times of awkwardness when you see the smiling faces, the friendships you make and the acceptance you get it, and the new experiences you are involved in makes it all worthwhile. Sometimes you may ask yourself ( and I have) is it worth it? Am I making any difference. ... read more

Genocide - All Hell Breaks Lose (April 6th 1994 to July 18th 1994) Within hours of the plane explosion and the death of all aboard the killings began. The plan that had been prepared over a long period of time was at last executed. Road blocks were set up, prominent Tutsis and Hutus targeted and executed. The nation went on a rampage. Killing, looting, raping, torturing and the destruction of property where the order of the day. The small UN peace keeping force ably led by Lt. Gen. Romeo Dalliare were unable to prevent the situation from escalating and getting out of hand due to the failure of the UN to intervene. The world had turned its back on the people of Rwanda in their greatest “hour of need”. UNAMIR (UN forces stationed within Rwanda at ... read more

GACACA (pronounced Ga -cha -cha hard sounding “g“) This ancient form of tribal justice system was revised after the 1994 Genocide period to cope with the overcrowding of the prison system as a result of the number of genocide suspects being held. The normal judicial system was still being rebuilt after the protracted conflict and genocide period and was unable to process the prisoners in a reasonable period of time. Some writers suggest that it would have taken the normal judicial system up to 100 years to process all the prisoners. Some of the prisoners had already been waiting up to 8 years for their case to be heard. So to help speed things up in 2002 Gacaca was reintroduced. Gacaca actually means “grass” and it comes from when the villagers would sit around on a ... read more

The Relative Calm before the Storm (1950 to 1962) 1950 t0 1962 saw a greater push by the Rwandans both Hutu and Tutsi for Independence. The Hutus who were becoming more and more educated demanded change in the political administration and greater Hutu recognition. In 1957 the Hutu intellectuals demanded that the United Nations hand over Rwandan administration over to them (the Hutu majority) pointing out the injustices and inequalities that were occurring within the country. The Catholic Church at this point were also becoming very proactive in there support for the Hutus and actively championed their cause. At this point in Rwandan history the Belgium Government which had for so long been Tutsi supporters now changed allegiances and began to support the Hutu cause in the name of fairness and democracy. In July 1959 sporadic ... read more

Genocide - Setting the Scene Pre 1950s In 1885 at the Berlin conference Rwanda and Burundi were officially assigned to Germany as part of the German East Africa colonisation policy developed in Europe to divide up the African continent amongst themselves. It was not until 1892 (7 years later) that any German entered Burundi. When the first German entered Rwanda what he found was a very well organised country with effective administrative structures in place. During this period of time (plus previously) the leaders within the country where from the Tutsi tribe with a Tutsi Monarch. Even though the Tutsi tribe were the major administrators of Rwanda there were two principalities (areas) that resisted Tutsi control. In 1912 with the assistance of the Germans the Tutsis successfully took administrative control of these two principalities. Resentment and ... read more

THE WEDDING Rwandan Weddings (Betrothals) are a reasonably drawn out complicated affairs. Most traditional Rwandan marriages are divided into 3 stages each holding equal importance. To begin with there is no such thing as an engagement or period of being engaged. When both the male and female decide they like each other enough to get married the process begins. Stage 1. During this stage the Brides parents and the Grooms parents ask a number of people (generally three in number and mainly males) to represent them in the bridal negotiations. These people are generally respected friends of the family, in some cases they may be people who have done this before and hire out their skills. In our particular case I think they were just very good and trusted friends of the family. A time is ... read more

Election Rwandan Style Rwanda has just gone through its third Presidential Election post 1994. Election day was the 9th of August, but as in most countries the actual campaign started months ago. When I first arrived in Rwanda there was already an air of anticipation and excitement about the upcoming elections. The official campaigns hadn’t been launched yet but there where posters and radio ads encouraging people to carry out their right to vote. The Electoral Commission employed and trained hundreds of representatives to move throughout the country to conduct forums explaining the importance of their right to vote as well as how the voting process will be carried out on the day. Unlike Australia where you number your candidates in order of preference here voters are required to put a thumb print next to the ... read more

My Weekend Away Part 2 08/09/2010 and 09/09/2010 Got up early today so I could have a nice cold shower. The shower facilities here are better than at my volunteer house. At least they have a tap here and I don’t have to turn on the shower with a pair of scissors. There is also decent pressure . Emmanuel called on me at 6:55am and we were seated in church at 7:00. The service itself I feel followed traditional Roman Catholic lines but with a few added extras. The songs and music were obviously African, they had liturgical dance with each of the songs performed by a group of children, I suppose a bit like a liturgical choir in as much as they practice during the week for the following service. They looked fantastic in their ... read more

My weekend away (2 part entry due to its length) 08/09/2010 A few weeks age Emmanuel invited me to visit his family home in Muramba an area of Gisenyi. I have to admit that initially the thought of going to visit was interesting but as we got closer to the date I felt a bit wary as there seemed so much that was uncertain and in his wonderful African way couldn’t answer any of the concerns or questions that I had. For example I was under the impression it was a one day visit, an in, greet them then out. So I organised myself just for a one day visit. Oh no this was not the case, as we were boarding the bus to travel to his home town he informed me that we would be ... read more
