During last evening we discussed our next moves. We were about 90km north of William Creek and 110 south of Oodnadatta. Do we abandon our attempts to get to The Painted Desert this trip and head back to William Creek and then across to Coober Pedy, knowing the road conditions as they were? Or, do we keep heading north to Oodnadatta and then sus things out and either go across to Coober Pedy directly or head through The Painted Desert? Two things helped us with the decision and both can be attributed to the good Samaritans from the day before. The first was that due to their repair of the puncture, we still had a spare tyre. The other was that ‘Dad’, with his extensive outback experience told us that we were virtually halfway along the ... read more
Finally at the Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta.
If it can be pumped up, we can move it out of the way.
Go Greg!

With our spirits high and confident the road conditions were favourable we set off for the famous Pink Road House in Oodnadatta. Road conditions were pretty good for a while. They never really got bad … but it was abundantly obvious we were driving across Sturts Stony Desert. There were gibber plains to the left and gibber plains to the right. The colours were sometimes, black, sometimes white and sometimes red. It was quite beautiful. We saw the odd small group of cattle standing under a tree at the roadside of course. Out on the plains the gibber stones appear quite small, but in reality, they were much larger, varying in size enormously: from golf ball, to fist, and even the odd football. As the road graders do their bit to improve road conditions taking out ... read more

Leaving Farina we knew there would not be much more time on the bitumen. After Maree we would be on the Oodnadatta Track and no more bitumen for a while. The drive to Maree was pretty uneventful. The CoVid border check point at the start of rhe Birdsville Track just as you entered Maree was evident. Looked like a pretty boring deployment as we haven’t run into many travellers coming from that direction. However, we were barely on to the gravel when an oncoming 4x4 chucked a rock at us and we had a star shaped chip in the wind screen high up in the middle of the drivers view. We heard the ping. It wasn’t until Joan said, “Is that a chip?” that Greg even realised it had happened. We knew a crack was imminent. ... read more

Next stop was Merna Mora Station. We had camped here many years ago in their campground near the main road. It was pretty primitive. This time we decided to go further in where there was obviously a higher standard of site. Not only was there power, but also water. We were in seventh Heaven! We had thought that after Peterborough we would probably not have a water connection again until we got to Whyalla. Any shower is a good shower but camping showers rate pretty lowly. This was a delightful location. 12 powered sites to connect to, chooks to entertain you, a campfire (with wood supplied) to share with others, happy friendly campers … including some of those lost CoVid refugees hanging around until it is safe to return home interstate or looking for a new ... read more

As soon as we returned after the last trip, we set about finding a new fridge solution. You’d think choosing a fridge would be easy. Not quite so. Many options are not available, or had very long lead times. 3 way or purely 12volt? We opted for 12volt. Next thing was size. The newer fridges are taller and skinnier so none would fit our space exactly. We didn’t want a smaller capacity either. Who could we trust to do the install? Armed with our choice of a 285L Bushmaster 12v fridge freezer, Greg went to chat to Dario’s at St Mary’s. Yes, they could get what we wanted. No, it wouldn’t fit but they could make it fit. Yes, they could do it … but not for 3 weeks. Yes! Yes! Yes! Book us in! That’s ... read more

Entering Farina this trip was so different to last time. Last time it was a buzzing place with people everywhere, The Underground Bakery was operating and the volunteer rebuilding program was in full swing for its annual winter program. It was hard to find a park in the main street and the campground was overflowing. All the premium sites were taken so many like us camped amongst the bushes. This time the Bakery doors were closed and there were no cars in the street. Even the camp ground was pretty much deserted. We only realised this trip just how big and beautiful the campground is. What is usually the volunteer’s campground was open to the public although the 240v power was not available. The grounds are superbly clean and well organised. There are fire rings and ... read more

A nest? Or just some grass caught up in the bush?
An emu footprint … but we didn’t see any.

Next stop, Farina to check out the ruins. We heard about this place just a few days before we left on our trip. The volunteer restoration programme and the Underground Bakery captured our imagination so we opted for a couple of nights here instead of going on to Maree. The volunteer restoration project runs for 10 weeks from May through to July. Anyone can volunteer, skilled or no specific skills. Teams of volunteers work on the designated project for the year. There are teams involved in cleaning, stone masonry, all aspects of the bakery through to garbage and campground fees collection. Many of the volunteers are grey nomads, some returning almost every season. People come from all over Australia to volunteer. Buildings are being restored just to a height where visitors can wander through and imagine ... read more

A week out from our planned departure South Australia was looking down the barrel of a possible new outbreak of the Delta strain of CoVid and hence possible lockdown of Adelaide. So, we made a spur of the moment decision to leave 5 days early. With a few bookings changed, shopping done, Version 3, 4 or 5 of the Itinerary, we headed out of Adelaide on 29thJune. On Wednesday we left the Barossa and headed for Burra. It felt so good to be getting out in the caravan again. Instead of passing through flowering canola crops as we so often do as we begin our trips, we were passing through freshly germinating crops. The countryside was looking so good … the best it has been in years. It was just on lunchtime when we arrived at ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Renmark May 18th 2021

Today we’ve got a long day of driving to Renmark in the South Australian Riverland, near the Victorian border. As we check out we get chatting to Rob, my pilot from yesterday. He says that today he’ll be flying a group of intrepid expeditioners up to the not so thriving metropolis of Leigh Creek and then on to a picnic on the shores of Lake Eyre. One of the other guests in reception seems to think that Leigh Creek’s major claim to fame is as a landing ground for space junk. I hope Rob gets all his passengers back here safely. I’m not sure you’d feel all that well if a random piece of some Russian rocket smashed into you while you weren’t looking. There seem to be lots of dead kangaroos on the side of ... read more
