Monday 10th April 2023 - Wednesday 19th April 2023 We're still here, it's not as bad as it could be, in fact we're almost enjoying our extended time here. We tend to plan our days the night before, being very flexible and often changing our minds several times the next morning. Since the last blog entry we have travelled to Adelaide city several times, spoken to the Service Manager where our Jeep is more than several times, enjoyed a vintage car rally in town, been for a long walk from Belair down the hills to a train station closer to home, visited the town of Hahndorf for at least the 4th time, this time with an elaborate and filling lunch, plus explored the surrounding towns. If it wasn't for the fact that we are "forced" into ... read more

Monday 3rd – Sunday 9th April, 2023 We are trying to make this enforced stop in Gawler a positive one, just part of out whole trip and adventure. We have often said that we should settle in one spot for a while and get to know the area rather than moving on regularly as we have been doing. To this end we try to organize activities to do and see as much as we can in a day rather than just letting things happen. On Monday we met up with Judy’s cousin Kathy and husband Harald for lunch at a nearby hotel. We were joined by another cousin, Fred, who Judy hadn’t seen since she was 12 years old, and his partner. Good food and good conversation was had. Tuesday was our cycling day and ... read more

Day 4 Gawler Ranges to Port Augusta Woke this morning to the sound of rain - which really put a dampener on things. We rushed our packup just to minimise how wet we would (or wouldn't) get - so we got away nice and early. Once packed, our plan was to take the "Old Paney Scenic Route" from our camp across the the bottom edge of the ranges over to the other side. Well, a left hand turn instead of a right had us going completely in the wrong direction. After about 15km or so we realised our mistake and had to backtrack our way to the correct route - losing all of our early time gains on the way. We stopped off to have a look at the old Paney Homestead and some other pioneer ... read more

Day 3 Nulla to Gawler Two apex predators from the outback go head-to-head in a battle of strength! This morning started off with something unusual - we had a wild dingo sniffing around our camp. Cautious but not fearful, the dingo checked out Chris and myself as we ate breakfast, then it trotted in between our two cars, grabbed one of Norelle's Crocs (which were just outside her van), then turned and bolted out of the park, only to drop her shoe just outside the park's fenceline. It seems that even a starving wild dingo could not take the taste of that shoe - so much so that he then thought a better idea for breakfast would be to dig up a section of plastic retic pipe and chew on that. Ultimately, although the dingo put ... read more

2000km/425 litres of diesel/6 days Gawler 24th November – Arrangements had been made to meet up with Michael and Christine who were on their way back from Western Australia. Crystal Brook is a sleepy little town where RV’s can stop for the night right opposite the butcher shop. Unfortunately it is also right alongside the train line and South Australia moves a lot of freight by rail. The next morning we drove a whole 50km to set up for the day/night at Jamestown. The weather was hot and windy so a big shady tree became our refuge. Rural areas not far from Gawler were suffering bad fires so we kept a close watch on weather and fire information. The 4 of us walked up town to patronise the butcher and supermarket. Dennis the butcher had us ... read more

...well, back in Gawler after 52 hours on the Ghan travelling the 3,000 ks from darwin to Adelaide. What a great experience. Food and company was terrific. Spent the last 2 days in Darwin at the Casino pampering ourselves....very nice. The train stopped for 4 hours in Katherine and Alice Springs to let passengers do the 'tourist thing'. We just bummed around in Katherine but we went camel riding in Alice.....and it was really good fun. It was a pleasant 21 degrees, sunny and zero flies. Food on the Ghan was fantastic....but far too much for us. 3 courses every meal.....plus morning tea (today). Sleeping was fun in our bunk beds but it was all good. Last day tomorrow with the run to Paky. Our friend met us at Darwin raliway station and gave us 300 ... read more

Howdy all, second day on the road and are at our base camp prior to the launch north....at Gawler SA. Deb's sisters place. We have had a smooth drive over with the car and trailer performing well. Had a minor issue with the FM transmitter so it looked like we may have no IPOD music....but it seems to have resolved itself so all good. Stayed at a caravan park in Bordertown last night....bit noisy with all the truck traffic but otherwise OK. Off to Mount Remarkable tomorrow........ read more

Gawler and the City of Adelaide The great thing about travelling with no plans, is that you can just make it up as you go along. That's how I came to be here, in Gawler, house sitting for my cousin while they went up to Darwin for a holiday. We had christmas together which was lovely. Christmas day was spent with all of the family (it's a huge family so it was a big day), with lunch at one house and dinner at another. As you do on Christmas, you tend to over-indulge in all things yummy and by the end of the day we were all full, exhausted and happy. My cousin and family left on the 27th December, driving up to Darwin. So with that I was on my own, looking after 3 dogs, ... read more
