Beware of the Dingos, don't feed the dingos, walk in groups, summertime is when dingos are "boisterous and playful," Dingos are the wild dogs on Fraser Island. Now, I think seeing Dingos on Fraser Island is like seeing Aliens in Roswell, New Mexico because with all the hype, warnings, and signs about these animals, I didn't see one on my whole trip to Fraser Island. The Fraser Island trip started out in Hervey Bay where I was put into a group of 4 Irish, 1 German, and 2 English lads from my hostel. The trip was a 3 day/2 night safari on Fraser Island where we traveled around the island in a 4WD camping, hiking, swimming, and a bit of Dingo watching. Once we hit the bottle shop and got our supplies, we all piled into ... read more

Jan and I find ourselves childless for our first Christmas together. One thing we know about each other is that we both like the sun, the sea and the wind in our faces so with no plans we pack a few clothes and hop on the bike and head north not knowing quite where we will end up. I had an idea that I would like to try and reach Airlie Beach, but that would depend on how saddle sore we both got. With the bike needing fuel every hour or so it is relatively slow going but the dismount for fuel gives us a chance to stretch our legs. First night we call it a day when we get to Gladstone and check into a backpackers for the night. We decide to take a walk ... read more

Up at 6am, pack and check out for 7am. We have a quick breakfast and then off to the 4wd centre for our breifing, they make it sound very dangerous. Fully briefed we set off for the ferry. The ferry crossing is quite nice, our group consists of Thor, Elena, Josh, Adam, Manny, Libby, Claire, and Sophy. We land approx 11am and head for Lake McKenzie. Roads are very slow and bumpy and it is over an hour before we reach the lake. Lake Mckenzie in Fraser Island is said to have one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The white sand and clear fresh water gives you the feeling that the beach is artificial but we just chill out in water ... its really hot here and everyone stays in the shade. After ... read more

The next Dan cooked a great fry up and we spent the morning booking our boat trip. Our boat was defender and she was an old sailing rig. I spent the up in the mountains on a Quad Bike Track which was great fun and got real muddy. The group I was there with were a bit boring and I ended up staying a bit longer and doing the mountain challenge which was a bit hairy. I eventually fell off trying to a sharp turn on the steepest part of the hill as the quad overbalanced. I jumped off when I couldnt hold her but I had escaped as the damm thing starting rolling down the hill and I had to jump up and run down the hill to escape. Luckily we were both ok and ... read more

Airlea Beach was the jumping off point for the Whitsundays. We had all travelled down from Magnetic Island yesterday but by different methods of transport. I had come down in Dans Fiat 124 with Jenny with what felt like an inflatable dinghy in the back but turned out to be Dans mattress which as far as i know he never used. It took a long time as we first had to get the car ferry to the mainland and then drive through a very heavy storm on the way to Airlea. We booked in at Airlea Backpackers where we met Thor, Elene, Josh and Michael. Airlea is basically a staging post for the Whitsundays with one main drag and a long beach. As it was Dans' birthday we are went out but the food wasnt great ... read more

Everyone knows Cairns because it is home of the Great Barrier Reef but for me it was home for 2 and 1/2 months. I have been living and working in Cairns for the past several months and now it is time to leave traveling the rest of Australia. When I first came over to Australia my goal was to work and live as a local; I definitely have been able to accomplish this goal and what a place to live in. PJ O'Briens was my place of employment and it was not your typical Irish pub with its chaoitic backpacker meals, bartneders in hot pants, crazy rugby fans, dance music, coyote ugly nights, and International customers and staff. PJs' was one of the busiest bars in town and I got a chance to see the ... read more

From Scottys' I headed south to Magnetic Island with Dan heading north and Jenny already of me. It was sad leaving Scottys' as I liked it here. I got the bus down to Townsville the staging post for Magnetic Island where I eventually got a boat to the island but it was a long wait. When I got there I went to Base Backpackers to check, and this is where I met Thor and Chris who were trying to keep cool in the Wigwam style bunkhouse.... read more

Arrived Mission Beach after a really boring and annoying trip down from Canz last night, full of kids and it was all a bit dull on the OZ Experience really and I was glad to see the back of them and the bus when I reached Mission Beach. Scotty turned up to meet us in his van and quipped 'I hope all the guys got life insurance' I spend a few days at Scottys' which was a real beach type hostel, 5 mins walk from the sea with Palm Trees everywhere. I was glad to me here and this is where I would make a few friends.... read more

Nestled in the Glass House Mountains on the Sunshine Coast in Beerwah Queensland, we visited Australia Zoo, the official home of the Crocodile Hunter. In November 2003, we arrived early and met Brian and Stewie from the television show and had a brief chat. We asked them about the Irwins and they said they were there but not available. Brian was cleaning Agro & Cookie’s billabong (Aboriginal meaning "small lake") and he said he had no idea that the Crocodile Hunter was so big in America, but that he was just doing his job. (Is he joking???) He seemed surprised that we recognized him from the show. Next best to meeting Steve or Terri I reckoned :) Just to get the chance to SEE Australia Zoo was so inspiring! The first thing you see is Coot-tha, ... read more
