Day 101 - Wednesday 9 January At half nine the bus pulled into Hervey Bay and most people including luckily the German next to me got off. This is where most people do their Fraser Island trip. Not us however our budget trip although the same, departs from Rainbow beach a quiet village instead. As this particular bus doesn't stop at Rainbow Beach, we had to get off at Maryborough and wait for an hour for the next bus. We also said goodbye to Simon who is carrying onto Brisbane. He's flying home tomorrow and will be back at work on saturday (haha). Just after lunch the bus pulled into Rainbow Beach and we got off. The hostels are all straight across the road from the bus stop, so luckily we didn't have to drag our ... read more

After a hectic New Year which we spent at South Bank with a swede and a german we got on the greyhound up to Noosa for a few days. The weather was dreadful, and the beaches were closed. We caught up with a few people that we had met way back in Coffs which was nice. After a pretty uneventful couple of days we headed to Rainbow. There was a lot of talk that we wouldn't make our Fraser trip as the island was closed due to the cyclone, so our hopes were not that high. Some people had their trips cancelled!!! When we woke up in typical Jon and Harry jamminess the sun was out and we were complaining that it was too hot!!! Our group was formed, beer orders were taken and the land ... read more

Well we actually got to have a lie in this morning - we were only being collected at 12.00 midday for our kayacking in the sea - we didn't know what to do with ourselves! The instructor picked us up and took us to the sea, was a bit cooler today but we we're all thankful that there was no rain. The instructor for the day was not the most enthusiastic to say the least and after about 20 minutes on the water (must say I think Kayacking is not mine and Di's strong point) and no dolphins in sight he brought us ashore this little sand island for a rest and to look out for them from there. We had a little wander and found that the island was actually home to this strange species ... read more

We were going kayaking today and were supposed to have the training and meet our group for Fraser Island but because of xmas there was no meeting yesterday so we are now missing it! uh oh - how do we drive again??! So we hit the sea for our Dolphin Kayaking, me and Lou shared a Kayak and managed to get sand banked which was quite funny! After to trying to push ourselves out with the paddles I had to submit and get out the Kayak and push, miss lady muck Lou just stayed in - charming! Anyhow, we stopped off at a little island where there were thousands of Soldier crabs, they are really funny and all run away from you and when they sense you really near they bury themselves in the sand and ... read more

Well today has started off very well - we just received confirmation that we have a free upgrade on our accommodation in Sydney over new year - fantastic! When we were in Cairns we somehow managed to find a hostel on the Internet with CheapBeds.com website at a place called Chillie Blue Backpackers. We had really struggled as all the hostels wanted either 7 or 14 nights minimum duration and all the hotels were about 1300 dollars for 4 days (about 650 pounds). However somehow we managed to find this hostel for 300 dollars - so booked it straight away. Just to be on the safe side we emailed the hostel direct and asked them to confirm the reservation, they emailed back saying they were overbooked and Cheapbeds.com had made a mistake. We contacted Cheapbeds, who ... read more

On our way back to Maroochydore for the last few days we will spend with Dennis and Maggie, we stopped at Tin Can Bay which is about 25 minutes from Rainbow Beach. Every morning (usually) some wild dolphins show up near the marina in Tin Can Bay to be fed, right now there are 2 dolphins that routinely show up. I guess there used to be loads more that would come in a few years back, but now there are jsut the 2. They usually show up around 7am, and know that brekky is at 8am. They have volunteers that run it, and give a little talk, etc. For a small donation, you can get a fish and then they allow groups of 10 in the water to feed the dolphins. Was a pretty neat experience. ... read more

I went to Tin Can Bay early this morning, with Becky and Ade who I was on the fraser island trip with, to feed two Indo-Pacific dolphins that visit the area most mornings. There was a male called Mystique and a female called Patch. We all got into the water with them and I fed Mystique. When I got back to Rainbow Beach I went for a walk up to Carlo Sandblow, with an American woman called Maria from my dorm, from where there is a great view of the beach. I went sea kayaking this afternoon and saw a few turtles and a few of my group saw a stingray. Most days you can kayak alongside dolphins but it was really windy and the water was too choppy for them to want to come to ... read more

Mon 29th Oct: With our trip to Fraser Island leaving from Rainbow Beach, it was time to leave the luxury of our town house for Rainbow Beach. On arriving, we tried to book into Pippie's Hostel but it was really busy. They thought they could fit us in but needed to ask some guests if they'd mind upgrading so suggested coming back in an hr. Not aproblem but Rainbow Beach is the smallest hamlet ever! We drove down to the beach for lunch but the weather was grey and windy so decided to head back to library to use the internet. Whilst in there a massive storm rolled in and it started pouring with rain, not a good sign for Fraser tomorrow. On checking the forecast it confirmed our worries so we postponed our trip till ... read more

Arriving at Rainbow Beach, Knowing that i will be bumping into some familiar faces from our Canoeing Safari....It was nice!! Even better as the Hostel staff was very friendly and the hostel itself was very small and cosy. I found my retreat on the Hammock, spent many hours there lazing around and taking it the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the place. Watching Yo painting her boomerang, Darren stick dancing, Wasss!!!.... carving the didgerido and some girls gossiping on the bench beside me. ... read more
