K'gari meaning God's of Paradise is the aboriginal name of Fraser Island. Located off the Queensland coast just south of the Great Barrier Reef, opposite the coast from Maryborough, and covering over a 180,000 hectares and 120 kilometers long it is composed mostly of sand, the largest sand island in the world. A island of barren sand dunes. No!! An island with over a hundred fresh water lakes, the second highest concentration of lakes in Australia, some tannin and others crystal clear and surrounded by white sandy beaches. An island where rainforest grows. To this paradise came I and a group of other people from Australia, Britain and Japan on a three day tour. We spent the first night lodged in the KingFisher resort on the east side and the second in the Eurong motel on ... read more

Well, we got to Hervey Bay late on Wednesday night and were all geared up for our Fraser Island adventure. For those that don't know, Fraser Island is basically a sand island (the biggest one in the world) just off the coast of Australia. We had signed up for a 3 day camping adventure. We have no guide, just fellow travelers and we navigate our way through the island in a huge jeep. We had no idea what to expect, but our group was the four of us, 2 Canadiens, 1 French guy, 2 German girls & 1 Korean guy. We loaded up took the ferry and were on our way.....our first stop was Lake MacKenzie, the most popular destination on Fraser Island. It's basically this clear lake....I've definitely never seen anything like it, unbelievable!!! It ... read more

Hotel Kingfisher Bay Resort, Fraser Island (dag 2 af 2). Heldagstur med 4WD: “Ranger Eco-Tour of Fraser Island” (8-17).

Hello Everyone, We've arrived in Brisbane and are finally done with our bus transport!! Bus is by far the worst way to travel...so slow! Anyways, when we were back in Hervey Bay we went out to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. We went on a self drive safari with 8 other people that we got put with in a 3 ton 4X4 vehicle. The morning we left we had an hour briefing on safety and instructions on how to drive on the loose sand and beaches. Needless to say after the briefing we got the feeling that we would be lucky to come back alive. The vulgor guide that did our briefing played videos and told stories of nasty rollovers that left many either dead or paralysed! Funny how they tell you ... read more

After finishing in the Whitsundays and returning to Airlie Beach for a couple of days, we set off on another midnight bus southbound. Desination: Hervey Bay and Fraser Island. Upon arrival @ our Beaches hostel we are introduced to the group we will join for a 4-wheel expedition of Fraser Island - the world's largest sand island. Holden elects to be the group leader - only after no one else speaks up. Thus the 3 day/2 night journey begins. The group consists of eleven members: 2 french women named Sophie and Cecille; a Frenchman, Thomas; a German named Andreas; Nathalie, from Canada; and an English contingent of four - one couple(Adam and Sarah), Graham, and Will. We were all strangers at the beginning of this trip, but not for long. We are quickly asked to decide ... read more

We stayed one night in Hervey Bay before embarking on a two day guided trip to Fraser Island just off the coast there. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and has miles of beach ( not that you can swim in the sea on account of the currents and Tiger Sharks ), rainforest, lakes, marshland, sand blows etc. The trip mostly involved being bounced along sand tracks in the back of a big 4 wheel drive bus with a load of germans ( we were the only english people - even the guide was german! ). We got to swim in lakes and creeks, walk through a bit of rain forrest, revise GSCE german and so on. I'm not sure it was great value for money but it was an OK trip. ... read more
