We came back from 3 days on Fraser Island today. For those of you that don't know. Usually self drive 4x4 adventures on Fraser Island, means that you are randomly thrown together with another 10 random people, whom you have never met and have to make a series of decisions. These decisions are quite medicore really, like what to buy at the supermarket, how much meat to order, or how much alcohol to buy. But as most of you will know, living with someone at university or indeed your husband or wife, the negotiation involved in these decisions is vital if the friendship/relationship is to survive. Now imagine, a group of complete strangers trying to make these decisions- I feared that I had become the wicked witch already. Instead of having a group where people wanted ... read more

Arriving in Hervey Bay after a relativley short and painless bus trip it was 8pm-ish so we were only able to see it at night, but as with all the hostels up the coast there is always someone at the bus station to pick you up in their vans to take you to the hostel, another Koala's hostel. The hostel was pretty cool with a swimming pool, bar and relatively nice rooms. After a couple of minutes our 6 bed dorm room was filled by two canadian guys who were in the van. In my experience Candian people are always really cool and up for a laugh and Mike and Adam were no exception to this and we all got on really well right away. Friday was the Fraser Island briefing talk at 3pm. In the ... read more

Sorry for the delay in updating the site...... You wouldn't beleive how busy this travelling lark is :) Hervey Bay is the gateway to Fraser Island, which was one of the much looked forward to trips for the both of us. We decided to do the day trip to Fraser Island, rather than the 3 day, budget backpacker trips offered very cheaply to us. The thought of sharing a truck with 14, sixteen year old back-packers, on their $2 a day budget, as they share a can of beans, didn't appeal too much to us..... (The real reason to be honest is being that they would just makes us feel old gits !!) Our day trip consisted of flying into the island on a lovely little plane, landing on the beach, which doubles up also as ... read more

Our final morning was well adorned with hangovers, and nicknames had finally stuck. Most notable of these was the two German lads insistence on calling bill "Willy W@nker" and asking him "where is your chocolate factory???". As people tried to piece together the events of the night before we packed up, and prepared ourselves for the final day. Vicky was first to drive along the flat easy beach, but still showed us how unstable 4x4s can be by apparantly aiming for the soft sand and turning in it while in the back our stomachs turned and our hands reached to cross ourselves. Like I said... I found God on this journey! After two dips into the deposit-killing saltwater Bill took over again to drive us up to lake Wabby, and here we were once again rewarded ... read more

Feeling a little worse for wear I crawled out of the tent into the brilliant morning sunshine. After a stomach settling breakfast of eggs, beans and spaghetti we were soon packing up camp and heading to try and buy some ice to keep our food (and beer!) nice a cool. After filling up we decided to head up the beach to Indian head: the northern most extent of our journey. Indian head is a huge rock outcrop and on a calm day it is possible to see tiger sharks swimming in the water below it. Unfortunately on our visit the water was not calm enough to see the sharks, but nonetheless the view was breathtaking. Dunes, forests, beaches and the ocean were laid out before us in a perfect picture of paradise. I wanted to go ... read more

The horribly early morning was made more bearable by coffee and copious quantities of pancakes - and the excitement of what was to come. Safety talks and driving instructions peppered liberally with the phrases "I don't want to fine yers..." and "Keep the wheel straight - best advice I can give yers..." were the order of the morning and they seemed to go on for ever. However we were soon into our scruffy overloaded and top heavy Toyota Landcruisers and wobbling our way to Inskip Point and the barge to Fraser Island. The day was great fun - tearing along the beach and up the rough inland tracks. A real mixture of beauty and adrenaline was to be experienced. We went swimming in the crystal clear waters of Lake McKenzie which was a unique experience. This ... read more
