Where the rainforest meets the reef The day after our reef trip we headed to the motor home rental centre to pick up the campervan. We got beautiful, barely used 2 berth car with built-in shower, toilet, cooker, fridge but most importantly AC and additional bonus of a flat screen TV ;-) We were so excited to finally start the trip the way we like it - no organised stuff but 'US', the road and going wherever we want at our own pace. No more hotels and restaurants for a week - just campsites and BBQ ;-) To be honest we were so impressed by the campsites in Queensland, so great place to camp ;-) There is a lot to choose from - private ones, council-run ones and the ones in the national parks for just ... read more

Spend two nights at Cape Tribulation, with heaps of rain. Travelled through Kuranda, the Atherton Tablelands, were I went for a swim in one of the nice lakes there. We´ve also seen an old volcanic crater, but it´s all green, not how you would think of a volcan. Stayed at Peronellas the night and joined a guidet nightwalk through the park. The next day towards Townsville, were we stayed last night. Been jogging at the promenade this morning, they call it "The Strand". Anyway, very nice.. Today we´re ging further south, along the coast. Happy to use Mc Donald free WiFi :-) At the moment we are in Ayr, and its 35°C, so happy to sit inside. I´m loveing it.......But the milkshakemachine is out of order. So, no shake today...... read more

Monday 21 Feb. Today was planned as a ‘hang around the town’ day with no particular plans. Unfortunately Tony developed a problem with his foot which hampered his mobility and so we decided to test out the local medical facilities. Port Douglas has a privately run clinic and people who have Medicare insurance can receive free treatment. Everyone else pays and boy do they pay – AU$110 for a 10 minute consultation plus prescriptions at AU$21. True we can claim most back under reciprocal healthcare arrangements and for really expensive medical treatment then you use your travel insurance. However, following our wonderful excursion into the Daintree Tropical Forest National Park on Tuesday 21, Tony’s condition worsened and he was unable to put any pressure on the foot that night or this morning so it was back ... read more

Wow - what a day for seeing nature! We took a day tour with Daintree Discovery Tours, and it worked out great. Our guide, Adrian, has lived north of the Daintree River for about 12 years, so knows the area intimitely. We saw coastal areas, several rainforest locations, Cooper Creek for swimming, and a close up boat tour on the river. Oh, also the Daintree Ice Cream company, who produce ice cream only for local consumption - no "export" south of the river even to cafes or shops. The weather cooperated, so we saw great examples of many of the plants and animals which make up the incredible diversity here. Many, many stats like: there are more species of trees in 1 hectare of rainforest here, than exists in all of Europe. We didn't see the ... read more

We were quite settled by Bramston Beach and it felt like such an effort to move on. After driving along past Bartle Frere ( the highest Mt in QLD) we took possibly the worst road of our trip so far. In order to get up to Lake Tinaroo we had to take an extremely steep, narrow and windy road. The continual hairpin turns for over 20km left us all feeling car sick with both the boys crying. We (finally) arrived at Lake Tinaroo and spent a couple of nights in this peaceful and beautiful part of QLD. We spent the days kayaking on the flat crystal clear water and marvelled at the starry sky at night. We did however have a gas bottle incident with the perished connection bursting off the cooker and catching on fire. ... read more

Hello from Wonga Beach! It was Lloyd’s birthday 3 days ago and we got him 2 movies, lots of books, a sport fishing trip which he is going on today and a BIG packet of maltesers. While Lloyd and dad are off on the fishing trip, at the caravan park we are staying at, there is a BIG slide which is really steep that leads to one of the pool. There is also another pool which has a little waterfall that you can sit in and we’re, (me, Molly and mum) are going to swim in for the afternoon. A week ago, at the other caravan park, I made a friend who was German. Dad caught a fish and we ate it for dinner. I caught a fish too but when I was reeling it in, ... read more
