After a day's chilling in Port Douglas today's excursion was to the Daintree Rainforest and onward to Cape Tribulation where the Great Barrier Reef hits the mainland. We ventured through the town of Mossman which was reminiscent of many an outback town which catered for the needs of all within a 50 mile radius of the town. It was before 9am as we passed through, and there was little activity except for those heading to the local school. We continued on through the savannah or sugar lands of the region where harvesters were busily gathering the sugar cane for refining. Suddenly we entered the Great Daintree Park and immediately left the lush fertile lands of sugar and banana plantation to be met by a jurrasic forest, all now a world heritage site (but only since 1981). ... read more

On Wednesday morning, I drove up to see various parts of the Daintree Rainforest. It's reported that "this World Heritage Listed area contains the highest number of plant and animal species that are rare, or threatened with extinction, anywhere in the world. The Daintree Rainforest is over one hundred and thirty-five million years old - the oldest in the world. Approximately 430 species of birds live among the trees, including 13 species that are found nowhere else in the world." I first stopped at Mossman Gorge and to do a walk by the Kuku Yalanji people (aboriginal people who have been on the land forever). It was an informative walk about the plant life and how people survived/lived off the land. Our tour guide had some interesting stories about the area. I then went on to ... read more

Today, we have decided to go to Daintree, via Mossman Gorge. The Gorge is about 15 minutes drive away, and we set out early to try to beat the crowds. We park by an information centre that turns out to be about 20 minutes walk from the gorge itself. The walk is very nice, though, on a road through the rainforest. The gorge is... well, it's gorgeous, as you might expect! There are quite a few people there, though. Eddie sums up the courage to go paddling (yes, that is very brave), and eventually coaxes me in too. The water is very cold, but after a minute or two it's lovely. There are loads of fish swimming around, looking at the strange new tree trunks that have arrived in their home. A few very very very ... read more

Romana and I decided we would take a road trip along part of the east coast of Australia. This would be a farewell trip for Romana, having been in Australia since November and a welcome trip for me, having just arrived. So we set off with 10 days to play with, starting in Cairns and ending in Brisbane. We hired a little campervan so that we would have the freedom to stop when we felt the need and also didn't have to worry too much about accommodation along the way. We flew from Sydney to Cairns and as we approached our landing, the scenery was absolutely spectacular. We saw the coastal road that we would be driving along with mountains one side and beach all the way along the other side. Once landed, we all trailed ... read more

Hey all! So basically right after getting back from sydney we headed out on a 3 day field trip. On the way we stopped at Mossman Gorge which was a national park area... rainforest and water among all these huge rocks. It was beautiful and amazing. When we got to our accomadations (hostel in the rainforest called Crocodylas) we unpacked and stuff and then drove a few miles to Cow Bay Beach. sigh. it was amazing. sun, sand, shells, rainforest, blue ocean. i took a million pictures. walked along the beach. then laid in the sun reading. Just hung out after dinner playing cards and stuff. On the second day I got up for a bird walk in the morning. We didnt see much but it was still fun. Then we went to the Daintree Discovery ... read more

21st February 2008 When we woke this morning the sun was shining and there was not a cloud in sight. The sun made it feel much hotter but the shade temperature only rose a couple of degrees but the humidity was very high which always makes it feel much hotter. We got up early today ready to head further north to Mossman and Cape Tribulation We went past Mossman as we plan to walk up the gorge on the way back and continued on to Daintree Village. There we decided on a river cruise to see saltwater crocodiles, unfortunately the River Daintree was quite flooded as is usual for the rainy season. Crocs, like humans are not too keen on floods as it makes their shallow river bank hidaways too fast flowing and they go further ... read more

Our first hot night sans a/c (forgot to turn it on) and we survived. Was nice to have a night similar to summer nights at home. We sat around in the morning figuring about where we should go, then decided on going up to the Daintree rainforest and spend the night at one of the many eco resorts up there. We got on the road and took about 2 hours to get up in the area. It was a very nice, hot, amazingly dry, sunny day...so the drive was wicked. We made our first stop at the mossman gorge where people do a lot of swimming, we had arrived in Daintree National Park. We then made a quick stop at Sacha's dads place to arrange a boat ride on the Daintree River, then we headed to ... read more

On the way back from Cape Tribulation we visited the Daintree River. We had a hitchhiker on the boat... He was a White Lipped Tree Frog! There were also Crocs in the water and 1000s of bats and flocks of birds in the trees. Some trees would be black with flying foxes and others white with cockatoos :)... read more

Sunday morning we were picked up at 7.45 for our trip to Daintree NP in a 4WD Toyota run by Billy Tea Tours. After collecting other punters we headed north to Daintree village where we had coffee/tea and biscuits before doing a boat ride down the river. This was very interesting and we saw a fair cross-section of wildlife, lucky we were told, given that it was wet and at the start of the wet season. Saw three crocs, including a basking baby on a sandbank and large tree python (too far away for the camera) a beautiful kingfisher and various assorted birds and other animals before arriving at the Daintree cable ferry where we were collected by the 4WD again. The ferry affords access to the Northern section of Daintree NP and Cape Tribulation. It ... read more
