G'danga, Well we had a good last week in Queensland although it keeps getting hotter and hotter and very humid so makes you very sluggish. Arrived in Cairns last Friday and spent a couple of days here just looking around and then on the Sunday we booked a day trip to a town called Karundra. It's a small little town about 15 minutes north of Cairns and is surrounded by the rainforest. We arrived at Cairns railway station where you board the Scenic Railway which takes about 1 hour to climb up to Karundra and on the way you pass through the rainforest and waterfalls. Once in Karundra we had the day to wander around and I managed to find Australias Venomous Zoo! Becks loved this as spiders and creepy crawlies are amongst her favourite things ... read more

Well on my little break from working out on the reef I decided to take a trip up to Cape Trbulation in the Daintree national rainforest. Man it was primo. Apparently the oldest rainforest in the world. Nuts. But stayed at this Pk's hostel and it was amazing. Sweet swimming pool, bar, and a 2 minute walk to the beach. Swimming at the beach was a no no because a 4m crocodile had been spotted a bunch,. We actually saw it when we were fishing. I was so pissed I forget my camera. But we went out at high tide with hand lines for a little fish. We caught a little reef shark which we cooked up and man it was good. And we also caught a smaller manta ray. Now that was sketchy, nobody wanted ... read more

... read more

I landed in Australia just before midnight on Wednesday 20 September. Immigration took me aside for a little chat about my 'criminal record', so I explained it was all driving offences (as if this makes it all acceptable) and the very nice lady immigration officer told me it doesn't count as a criminal offence if you don't stand before a judge, so they let me in. I went to the tourist information desk to ask about a nearby hotel - and as my flight to Cairns was at 7 a.m. the lady at the desk suggested the 4th floor departure lounge which has sofas. I went up to the 4th floor and Dave the cleaner set me up in my own little apartment - he arranged the chairs so you and your baggage are safe. There ... read more

We took a few days break from Cairns and travelled up to Cape Tribulation, with a quick stop at Port Douglas and Mossman Gorge. Cape Tribulation is the only place in the world where two world heritage sites meet - the Great Barrier Reef and the Tropical Rainforest. So obvioulsy with such a renowed site we took our time to look around and revel in these two great marvels - NOT!!! John had us swinging from trees on zip wires and we even had to do one of them upside down (I (H) almost managed this feet). I mustn't complain though it was pretty good fun and I even managed to get through it without any injuries - YEAH!!!! Port Douglas was pretty nice - another nice beach but we had no time to stop. We ... read more

Hi All Just spent another tough day here in Queensland, today we took a boat out to the Great Barrier Reef and went snorkelling for the day... Very impressive sights, but have to say that it would have been even better if we really had a clue what we were looking at, rather than trying to avoid Reef Sharks and bashing into the coral! But we managed to get back unscathed! Prior to today we have spent a couple of days up at Cape Tribulation, in the Daintree National Park, the oldest rainforest in the world. Spent 3 nights at a hotel in the rainforest which was cool - Dave back to nature!! We even had bats hanging outside our window! More soon! LoL 29th August update - You now have some pics to look at ... read more

The furthest North you can travel in a conventional vehicle up the East coast of Australia is Cape Tribulation. North of here is 4 days of rugged 4WD track to Cape York - the very tip of Queensland. Cape Trib' is unique in that it is the only place on Earth where two World Heritage sites meet - the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. Jungle to coral in one stride. This is also the wettest area in Australia, perhaps even the world some years. Last week they had the annual UK rainfall in just a couple of days causing the roads to flood and the community up there to be cut off. Glad we missed that! What's it like? You might ask. Remember that we went to Borneo about, oooh, a thousand years ago? ... read more

So I didn't finish telling what happened at Magnetic Island! The place has an abundance of Eucalyptus trees, and those who have been paying attention to the story knows that it was a stray leaf from this tree, found in New Zealand, that led us to Oz in the first place. Nearing the end of our trip Down Under, and still no nearer to finding the famous Golden Carrot, we were getting nervous, but some conveniently helpful locals informed us that the Carrot had appeared on the island many years before. We showed them the leaf we'd found, and we were led to the exact tree it had come from (these locals are very knowledgeable!). On the tree were some mysterious carvings, which the locals translated for us. Apparently the Carrot, after having been stolen from ... read more
