Just over a three hour trip from Barkly Homestead to Camooweal which is only about 12klms over the NT/QLD border. We stayed on the billabong at Camooweal for a night just relaxing and taking in the beautiful countryside, its only about 4kms out of town. Were going to stay a few nights at the billabong but found out the Drover's Camp Festival was on so then hitched up and went into town and stayed at the pub. People come from all around for the festival and the Thursday night at the pub Tom Maxwell was playing, the guy we saw in Daly Waters and he played out at the festival as well. $70 gives you an entry into all events at the festival, Fri, Sat, Sun...... pretty good value! Met a couple of beautiful old drovers ... read more

Our destination today was the remote Barkly Homestead, in the Northern Territory, located on the Barkly Highway between Camooweal, Qld, and Tennant Creek, NT. It is a true oasis in the desert. A beautiful place. Clean and very well organised. We stopped at Camooweal and walked the very small community which was once a major player with cattle droving. The new, huge bridge at Camooweal spreads across the wide Georgina River, one of the 3 major rivers of the Channel country, which eventually flow into Lake Eyre. New, upgraded roadworks were noted too. Our drive took us through mainly uninhabited land used for cattle grazing. Hence, it was the occasional station homestead sometimes visible from the road. The rolling plains of grassland seemed never-ending with the colour of the landscape changing constantly. There were many road ... read more

Day 1. I was keen to get an early start. No alarm required she’ll be right. Wide awake at 0400! Well that’s too early so I tried to talk myself into going back to sleep of course that is impossible. Oh except for one case – involving me. If I may digress for just a bit. It was my last job before hitting the road maybe in August 2009 and hell yeah it was funny at the time. Back then I worked with 2 blokes good blokes Bruce and Chris. We had commenced at this particular place virtually at the same time, it was a new business opening up on the Sunshine Coast. Anyway it was early on in the piece and we were entering stock into MYOB. It was getting repetitive and monotonous! This had ... read more

Continued from Part 4... Day 14: We are up just after 8:00. Today will be a long day on the road. We pack our things and load the van. After a little breakfast we bid farewell to our host and hit the Stuart Highway around 9:30. We are basically going to see how far we can go today. The only thing we actually want to see is the Devil’s Marbles, about 400 km north on the side of the road. Other than that, all we will see is this long flat road. North of Alice Springs we see something that I had heard about, but thought was just a legend: a no speed limit zone. There is literally no speed limit. It’s called an “open speed” area and the sign urges you to drive to the ... read more

Geo: -19.9218, 138.119Here we are sitting by Lake Francis in Camooweal soakingup the tranquillity but we didn't get here without some issues, it appearsissues are a common thing for many travellers some have more than others. We left Charters Towers and headed for Hughenden andarrived safely without any issues. The RV camp is a massive $6 per night in thedirt carpark alongside the showgrounds, oval and alongside the very dry FlindersRiver, one of the locals claims he hadn't seen it flow in about 3 years.Porcupine Gorge was 73kms out and well worth the drive, the tourist brochuredescribes it as a mini Grand Canyon. Spectacular rock formations carved out bythe Flinders River (when it flows). It was a 1.2km walk down into the gorgewhere we found a nice little swimming hole for a dip, the water was freezing ... read more

Our thoughts turned westward as did our mechanised home as we said our farewells to Margaret, John and hopefully the black snake. Well not quite westward yet, a detour to the Cairns Regional Gallery was considered a must by the tour director. Eventually we tackled the Kuranda range and commenced the western leg of this years journey but managed only 110 kms to Rocky Creek war memorial park just short of Atherton whose thoughtful council supplied the park but also a place to park the motorhome and trailer right outside the laundromat. Laundry complete, ever westward, with an uninspiring overnight stop at Archer Creek rest area, a misnomer as all night Megan listened to the road trains coming down the hill under exhaust brakes waiting for one to leave the road and land ontop of the ... read more

7th November 2012, Departed Mount Isa in the blazing heat headed towards the Northern Territory border. Stopped at Camooweal (a town just before the NT border) and decided to look at the natural caves. There were two caves which originated as a result of volcano erruption many years ago. We stopped at the border and took some snap shots and Sasha marked that the Nicoll's have passed through the NT border. The speed limit on the Barkly Highway in the NT was 130km/h (Daniel was a bit disappointed that he couldn't safely travel at that speed with Taylor tagging along). We stopped at Avon Down's Rest area for dinner, before proceeding to setup camp at Wunara Rest area for the night. It was beautiful clear skies with a warm (not!!!) 39 degrees at night.... read more

We arrived at Innot springs caravan park where there were pools filled with water from the hot springs. One pool was freezing, one was warm and the other was hot. In the hot one you can press a button and bubbles turn on for 10 minutes. There was an indoor area with a really hot pool , but kids aren’t allowed in it. . After Innot springs the next day we went to Undara lava lodge  were we stayed for 2 nights. We did a tour in the lava tubes, which are big tunnels made by lava 200,000 years ago. There were lots of frogs living in them. Dad and I played to the crowds one night around the campfire. We then headed off to Normanton which is a place that has the Big Barramundi ... read more

May 2011 - We’ve been here at this 220000 acre cattle station in Western Queensland for nearly 5 weeks as work continues and we’ll probably stay here longer as required. Murray and Dave made and positioned the new water tower in four days and lifted the tank up, connected up the pipes and have fixed up the old tower. Also on the agenda has been mustering, both on quad bike and horseback (made DC very happy), branding, ear tagging and castrating (wince!), sourcing parts and fixing the various vehicles here (trucks, motorbikes, cherry picker, loader; (Once a mechanic – always a mechanic); putting out new troughs and doing the plumbing, feeding poddy calves (orphans) boiling up mung beans to give to the cows as a distraction while the poddy calves feed, fixing dodgy septic tanks, etc. ... read more
