November is coming, so once again it is time to get on a plane and head off - this year to Australia. 24 hours flying will get us halfway around the world to Cairns, at the north end of Australia's east coast. From Cairns we'll first be heading north into the rainforest for a short stay in a treehouse. Then we plan to spend three weeks slowly cruising south. We'll be staying reasonably close to the coast but also diving inland to stay in some national parks and using boats to get to a few islands on the way. Three weeks should get us to Brisbane from where we will fly to Adelaide on Australia's south coast and the start of part two of the trip. First we'll head north into the Flinders range of mountains, ... read more

We and Luna Ray are still poled up in the sky at Cairns Sailing Squadron boat yard. We have fallen into a routine for getting work done on the boat. We wake around 7 am, usually to the unsettling tremors that's made by passing trucks. Breakfast is usually followed by me doing some work like sanding or some activity that we all do to tire Alex out. This could be a walk through the dusty industrial estate to a shop for supplies, or maybe we will take the dinghy up the river to Marlin Marina and visit the Lagoon. During our stay we put our new dinghy wheels on, and with the dinghy back in the water I paddled over to meet Naomi and Alex who were getting on at the pontoon. As Naomi was reaching ... read more

Dear Grace and Mag, This will be a long one because I've got lots of photos and a lot of time has passed since my last one. So much has happened in the last 4 months I don't now where to start. I have to tell you about my friends, about how weird it is that I have a new beautiful niece that I haven't met yet, about my sponsorship offer and not to mention that I have fallen for an amazing person who can not stay in the same country as me! Yep... nice one Jess! :P I really love skyping you Grace but it is so strange to see you holding little Evalyn in your arms and I haven't met her yet. Because she's so good it's like you're holding a doll hehe. I ... read more

We spent a three nights at Marlin Marina, Cairns. Before we left we had a day with Naomi's parents and visited a dam up in the hills where we had a BBQ lunch next to a small playground for Alex, all overlooking the lake. Then moved on to Crystal Cascades for a planned swim but the area we chose was rocky, making it tricky to take Alex in for a paddle. We were running out of time so didn't have time to find a better swim hole and actually see the cascades. After a stop at Whitworths - bought an anchor for the dinghy - we went back to the boat for dinner. Tested the VHF radio and it seems to work fine now.... weird. The previous night Don and I had played with the hydraulics ... read more

Sunday, we left Horseshoe Bay around 7 am, and pointed straight towards to west side of Great Palm Island. We motor-sailed most of the way. There were a couple of periods where we switched the engine off but these only last 30-60 minutes before the wind dropped out. But with flat water and sunny skies it was a pleasant and relaxing passage.... maybe too relaxing as shortly after I had been on deck changing around the washing to dry, another boat passed us going the other way missing only by about 10 metres! The other helmsman was looking relaxed too as he was laid back on a hammock strung between his mast and front stay. As we came close to Great Palm the wind picked up but it was right on the nose from the northwest. ... read more

Van trip 17 July: Today went from Darwin to Kakadu. Walked around at a rock formation with a impressive view. After that we went to a Campsite with load of mosquitos. But it was all good with some beer and nice food. 18 July: 8.30 We left to see Jim Jim Falls. We hitchhiked there, I got the first ride not long waiting Fabio and Ericka arrived too. We started waling the last 400 meters were hard because it was all rock. Later on we swam and hanged out at the beach. We all walked back and we got a ride in the back of a truck. Kinda like mexicans all in the back with 7 people. We arrived back and ate some chicken. Then we drove around for a place to sleep, Again mosquitos but ... read more

I'm very behind with this blog entry; about 6 weeks behind in fact, but I've finally now got the time to write about one of the absolute best weeks of my life. My last blog ended in Brisbane, after which I'd already fallen head over heels in love with Queensland. However, the best was yet to come. I flew from Brisbane up to Cairns, north Queensland, where I'd booked myself a little treat - 2 nights in a swish hotel. Wow was it swish! I had 2 double beds in my rooms, big TV, gorgeous bathroom, a mountain view and onsite gym. The sea was just 2 minutes walk and the city centre only 10. When I got into my room I jumped for joy and did a little happy dance around the whole place. It ... read more

From Christchurch we began our short series of flights in to Australia and up North to Cairns. After 3 hours we had arrived in Sydney and had a small wait before boarding our flight to Cairns. As soon as we departed the plane the change in temperature from New Zealand was quite the contrast. The sun was beaming down and there wasn't a cloud in the sky - we just wanted to head straight to the beach. After a short shuttle bus ride from the airport we arrived at our hostel - Caravella Backpackers which was located just across the road from the promenade. After checking in we were shown to our room - a 6 bed dorm. The room was a bit of a mess and was full of stinking, sweaty French guys (lucky me). ... read more
