On arrival into Cairns airport we were greeted with a friendly "G'day" from the security man, and happily settled into our hostel, the infamous Gilligans. We spent our first few nights in Australia drinking, naturally, and had a great time meeting new people in Gilligan's own nightclub. The highlights of our nightlife had to be playing a crazy game of 'Bogan Bingo', driving round in an open top party bus, and watching too many wet T-shirt competitions! When we weren't hungover we managed to spend a day at the lagoon (in the north lagoon's tend to be favoured over the ocean because of the crazy amount of sharks hanging around), and we did a day trip to Atherton Tablelands. Here we walked through the rainforest, swung on vines, and swam in a couple of freezing waterfalls; ... read more

Hi Guys, Hope you are all well and enjoying the Christmas run up!! Can't believe I'm missing it all, I'd usually be getting excited already! Anyway, back to our adventure. We left for Bali airport on the evening of the 28th October and when we arrived, we were faced with a cancelled flight - could only happen to us!! Anton got on the case straight away and managed to get us a flight to Sydney and then up to Cairns. This flight was leaving 30mins after we received our tickets, so it meant a dash through the airport, trying to dodge all the long queues! Luckily a nice immigration man opened up a new passport checking line for us, so we made our flight (just!). We flew through the night to Sydney and were given breakfast ... read more

Day 55, 05/11/11 This morning at 11 I had a trial at a cafe along the Esplanade. I was there for about an hour and 40mins and learned a fair bit - how to make the coffees, the food, what size portions etc. When I finished the owner said she would let me know if I have got the job or not by Monday so I am keeping my fingers crossed. If this job doesn't work out then I will consider heading to Melbourne pretty soon. Stuart caught a flight to Sydney today so I am now by myself; in the afternoon I slapped on the suncream and headed down to the Lagoon, too bad that when I got there the clouds came out so I went and took advantage of some free internet before going ... read more

Day 54, 04/11/11 Today was just a day spent around Cairns doing not a lot really. I chose not to accept the free accommodation job in the hostel as it was smack bang in the middle of the day, no days off and 3 hours work for only a $20 room and breakfast. I didn't feel it was worth it as I wouldn't have any time to see the sights and have days out etc. We moved Hostels this morning because the one we were staying in wasn't great, this one is a lot nicer. We then headed into town just for something to do then my phone rang and it was Lisa who told me she knew where I could get a really cheap push bike which would be fantastic for getting around the city. ... read more

Friday November 4, 2011 - Day 9 As you may have seen in the last blog entry, there were pictures of the Great Barrier Reef. Jim was a little ahead on that one. We took a tour of the Reef on Sunlovers Cruises. We boarded a catamaran around 10 AM and set out for our adventure. When the crew went through the safety orientation at the beginning of the trip, they showed how to put on the life jacket and stated in the event of an evacuation order we should say a prayer and jump overboard. Luckily we did not have to experience this. There was one stop at Fitzroy Island where some people disembarked for an overnight stay. The total time to the reef including the short stop was an hour and 15 minutes. Sunlovers ... read more

Wednesday November 2, 2011 This is our first full day in Cairns so we decided walk around the city to get our bearings. Our first impression of the city is it is small and somewhat like Santa Cruz with lots of touristy things to do and lots of character. The esplanade is full of restaurants and a nice walking path along the ocean. There is no real beach in Cairns as at low tide all we could see is the mud flat with thousands of small crabs crawling around. Because there is no beach the city built a large salt water swimming pool at the main part of the Esplanade which is very nice. During our walk we came across a huge flying bug that sounded like one of Jim's small helicopters flying around. The bug ... read more

Day 53, 03/11/11 Today I did a few bits and pieces done which I had on my mind, mainly jobs. I had a number from a hostel which was offering work so I rang that she she invited my down to chat straight away so I jumped in the shower and headed down within the hour. I phone 3 farms this morning too, 2 didn't have anything and one potential potato farm but work seemed very hard so I might give it a miss. He told me the bag weigh up to 50kg! The hostel job seemed promising until she told me there wasn't a wage, but I thought it's not all bad as I can work here for free accommodation until I get a paid job, still no good as she wanted commitment until January/February ... read more

I'm trying to remember where I got up to the last time I wrote...ah the glaciers. Well the half day hike turned out to be plenty of time and we were both shattered by the end of it, strangely the worst part is getting to the glaciers, as the trek to the top is pretty rocky and so steep! I did feel at one point as though I was going to keel over, which was an interesting experience. We were treated to a free experience of the outdoor hot pools they had on offer afterwards though, 36, 38 and 40 degrees of pure heaven. On our way to Wanaka, we stopped at Lake Mattheson which even though it was incredibly early, was the most beautiful sight of mountains, nature, water, mist in the middle of nowhere ... read more

Wellllll it may have been a little while again since I wrote but in my defence the internet sucks here :( Much has happen in the last couple of weeks, I have moved back to Cairns which is amazing because it means that I actually have things to do again (also another reason why I haven't really written that much). I worked at the Cairns Wildlife Dome for 3 days which was kinda cool if a little boring. It is on the top of the casino and therefore is really small with not that many animals, there are loads of birds though that like to fly around and sit on your head while you are trying to clean the koalas. The people there were amazing though because they didn't really need any volunteers so would pretty ... read more
