Geo: -27.4676, 153.028Roma Street Parkland was our first destination of the day. It was originally the meeting place for several indigenous groups. From 1884 to 1964 it was used for Brisbane Markets to buy fresh produce and live animals. It became Roma Street Parkland in 2001. Today it is divided into precincts which focus on wetlands, a subtropical rainforest, and the arid interior. Since it was quite early we spotted a few runners and several gardeners who were in the process of replanting flowers in the beds and trimming the shrubbery. Like everywhere else we have been the park was spotless and very well maintained. We breakfasted at an open air cafe after leaving the park. It was quite enjoyable after the early morning walk and the hot chocolate and tea hit the spot, not to mention ... read more

Geo: -27.4676, 153.028Our morning started quite early today. We set out for a Sunday only market on the Eagle Street Pier. The stalls were occupied by artists and others selling their goods. There was jewelry, clothes, paintings, toys, massages, and hats. The area was very crowded since the nearest building was having a Climb for a Cure fund raiser going on. There were hundreds of climbers along with their supporters waiting for their time to climb the steps of a high rise on Eagle Pier. Their was a band playing and lots of cheering happening. Our next stop was Saint Stephen's Cathedral to attend Mass. The hymns that were sung are the same ones we have been singing at home. With the exception of the stained glass windows the Cathedral was plain and simple. They must ... read more

Geo: -27.4676, 153.028It was a perfect morning for a bike ride so we took advantage of it. We rode through the City Botanical Gardens. There are pedestrian and biking paths throughout the garden. The paths also lead out to a path which follows along the river for several miles. So we journeyed on along with many other people who were out enjoying the morning. Along the path we stopped for a few minutes to watch some people climbing the side of a cliff which skirted the path at one point. Once we reached the end of the path we returned to the garden to follow a few of the side paths. It was interesting to watch the gardeners planting begonias in the flower beds when this is considered their winter. The afternoon was spent in the ... read more

Geo: -27.4676, 153.028Here we are, all settled in a new location. Our airport shuttle picked us up in Sydney where we caught our flight to Brisbane which lasted and hour and a half.On the train to our hotel we befriended a couple from Australia. They were getting off at our stop and offered to head us in the right direction before catching their connecting train. We had an informative conversation about government and news in America which he follows daily on TV. When we arrived at our stop his wife waited for him while he walked us out of the station and headed us in the direction of our hotel. He advised us to use certain streets to avoid some hills. It's always great to meet nice local people to converse with. We soon arrived at ... read more

The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is a short distance from central Brisbane and is well worth a visit. You can go by car, bus or even along the river. The Koala Bears are the stars of the show but there are lots of other things to see including birds, kangaroos, emus, possums and reptiles. It is a great way to spend several hours watching wildlife in natural surroundings.... read more
