We have landed! Though our first steps in Australia were a nightmare in Sydney (did I mention don't ever, ever, ever fly Jetsar?) getting the rental car was a breeze. We made our way, with paper map in hand, to our apartment in Brisbane. By the way, they drive on the other side of the road. That was an adventure in the dark after an entire day+ of traveling. By this time it was 8pm on Halloween and pitch black. There were a few people in costumes, but it's not a big thing here. We found our apt on airbnb, but there are a few big buildings that are full of temporary apts around here. Ours has a great view, air conditioning, 2 bed/2 bath, all the basic tools in the kitchen, free parking, and free ... read more

In general I’m not one for weddings which involve international travel. In this case, I had to make an exception for two reasons- the first being the groom, the second being the location. I had met both the bride and groom about five years prior, while participating in an exchange program through my university. I had not returned to Australia since, so when the invitation came I quickly booked the twenty-four hour plus trip to Brisbane. The capitol of Queensland, the eastern coastal city of Brisbane is named for the Brisbane river which runs through it. The most populated city in Queensland, it is also the third largest city in Australia, though often overshadowed by Sydney and Melbourne, whose residents refer to Brisbane as ‘sleepy country town’ or a ‘poor cousin’ to the larger cities and ... read more

I enjoy spending as much time as possible with my niece who lives in Brisbane. While I'm there with her, we try to do several of the activities that the area has to offer. From playground equipment to museums, there are numerous attractions that are ideal for children of all ages. The Abbey Museum is a favorite place to go because of the hands on exhibits. Exhibits at the museum are educational on a level where even younger children can understand the concept. We like looking at the antiques from all around the world and the different time periods. The ceramics and glass artifacts are beautiful. There are also manuscripts and paintings from various countries. Not only are the exhibits set up for children, but there are programs that are offered through the year as well. ... read more

So after driving for ever or it seems forever on the Pacific Highway which let me tell you is a bit of a con as you do not see any water at all. We went through so many road works it was unbelievable I think they are completely rebuilding the Pacific Highway. We arrive in Byron Bay which we have been to before on our previous trip and it is still as chilled out as before - we stopped for a spot of lunch in an organic cafe - mind you to try and find anything not organic in Byron Bay would be difficult. So back in the car and another few hours before we arrive at Mike's daughter and family (Jenni, Steve, Sophia and little Alfie (the dog)). Well do you remember I said I ... read more

Due to the crap Internet signal in the apartment which keeps dropping out this was missed off the end of last blog: Deciding not to join the local winos for Meths and White Lightning in the park we returned home for a siesta before crossing the road to the Alliance Hotel, a Gastro pub of some renown. We intended to eat and watch the Brumbies vs Lions game on the big screen. Being a bit slow on the uptake we allowed ourselves to be directed into the restaurant rather than the bar. Dave and Sue had Baramundi and I had Crab spaghetti. Both were nice but not large portions and a bit pricey. We got to the bar as the game started. XXXX was watery but the Tooheys better. However, they had the Socceroos vs Iran ... read more

Well... It's the morning of the 27th of February, and we've got 2 nights til we depart. I am in the most surreal headspace at the second. It STILL hasn't quite sunk in that I am leaving the country, with no firm plans to come back in a matter of 48 hours. Occassionally my heart races and I am overcome with this frenetic mix of andrenalin and nervousness... but thats it. I am trying to work out if the reason is, that I am just so ready to leave (I have, after all, been thinking about this for the last 6-8 months!) or if its just because I am forcing it into the back of my mind so I don't have to deal with it. I hope to be honest that its the former, because otherwise ... read more
