We caught our early morning flight to Alice Springs and then another flight to Ayers Rock to meet with our tour; Adventure Tours Uluru & The Olgas. We were met by Ryan, our tour guide, driver and altogether fab guy, who took us to camp, right on the outskirts of Uluru national park, where we met the others on the tour (approx 10 people in total) and had a quick lunch before driving into the park to see The Olgas, and walk around these enormous sandstone rock formations. We learn't a lot about geology from Ryan, who would explain each of the areas of interest whilst we were on the bus, and when we were walking around them. In a nutshell, The Olgas, and Ulurua (Ayers Rock) are massive sandstone structures, formed billions of years ago, ... read more

What is the best known natural wonder of Australia? Right, it's Ayers Rock. Today it's called Uluru again. That's the Aboriginal name. And where is it located? In Australia center, right in the middle. So you might think that's not far away from Alice Springs, mh? But it's still about a 450km drive, a little bit further south along Stuart Highway and somewhat west on Lasseter Highway. Mr. Lasseter was looking for gold in the desert west of Stuart Highway during the wild days. Nobody knows if he found some because he didn't come back. On the way you pass by Mt. Connor, another rock formation eroded out of the desert ground. And then finally, where the road ends in the middle of nowhere is Uluru. And Kata Tjuta. You never heard about it? I did ... read more

Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) are found in the middle of the baking hot desert, but luckily for me next to Yulara, a purpose built complex. I stayed on the campsite for $13 a night, but as one company owns the lot anybody within the complex can use any of the facilities. I am told that Uluru is the second most profitable tourist attraction in Australia behind the casino in Sydney……..I can see why. Everything costs; there are 101 ways to spend your money from the $25 park entrance fee to over $3,000 per night at Longitude 131. I went on a sunrise shuttle to Kata Tjuta and walked both the Valley of the Winds and Olga Gorge, and then a sunset tour of Uluru starting with a walk around the base. A ... read more

Karl Johan tog en helikoptertur over omraadet. Efter mad over baal gik vi til ro kl. 21, vi sov ude i det fri med stjernerne haengende som et flot taeppe over os. Senere paa natten traek det op til uvejr, ... read more

Alex and I are now at Uluru or Ayres Rock where its a very pleasant 40 degrees!...You have to drink at least 1 litre of water every hour to stop yourself from dehydrating. The soil here is so bright its almost orange and the light reflects off Uluru to give it a different colour and atmosphere throughout the day. I know that Uluru is a spiritual place for the locals but it really does have a very calming and laid back atmosphere. If it wasn't for the wildlife it would be perfect!...There were red backs in the toilet block and grass hopper type things the size of my hand!!!?? It is disrespectful to climb Uluru as it is of such significant importance to the localpeople. Instead we did a base walk of the Uluru with a ... read more

Uluru (alias Ayers Rock) is just beautiful. I could sit and paint here for hours. From the tiny desert daisys to the gigantic structure itself its just so staggering. Had the most perfect day. Got up at 5am for the sunrise- caught a shuttle bus with two folks called Laura and Nick (another weird name coincidence!) Watched the rock change from black to purple, red, orange, grey. Was dropped off at the cultural centre where I learnt about the history of the place both in terms of myth and ownership. Really good and informative place to start- bought a self guided walking map and set off to explore. Its really interesting how the aboriginal religion is so physical- tied directly to the land. Followed the Mala Walk and then the Mutitjula Walk and learnt the legends ... read more

Forgot to mention, whilst I was at Ayers Rock Resort there was a national Harley Davidson owners rally on- so about 2000 mid life crisis bikers had decended on my accomodation and there were bikes everywhere. Loads of people were winging but I thought it was great. Spent all day hanging around hoping that someone would offer me a ride round the rock. It wasnt until tea time that finally I got chatting to one of them- a guy called John from Sydney. After coming to meet 'the gang' he agreed to take me round the block on his bike so I got a ride after all! It was quite cool zooming round the desert under the stars on the back of a harley. I want one!... read more

- FOOD: Free breakfast (although Vegemite); very good spread for lunch of meats, salad and cheese; champagne with Doritos and dip to watch Uluru at sunset; garlic bread and pasta with loads of fresh veg that WE made ourselves over a campfire; cereal breakfast and fire toasted toast; camp made damper (peach bread) - AREA: Sunrise at Anzac Hill; first stop at place with unhappy, cramped animals; The Forgotten Rock (looks like Uluru); red sand outback with lots of trees, tiny flowers and wild animals; Kata Tjuta National Park Cultural Centre to learn about Aboriginal law, religion and Dreamtime stories; the absolute mind blowingly awesome Uluru with it's intense colours and caves, crevaces, textures and markings (crap with a clouded over sunset but magical at sunrise); posh campsite with hot showers; sleeping in swags under the ... read more

On Sunday evening, we arrived at Yulara (Ayers Rock Resort) in time for a swim in the pool and a walk up to a viewpoint to see the sunset on Uluru (Ayers Rock) itself. The following morning we were up at 5am again to witness sunrise on the rock before a long walk around Kata-Tjuta (The Olgas) followed by a BBQ lunch at the Aborignal Cultural centre right next to Uluru. In the afternoon, Tim climbed the rock (2hr15min climb in 36 Celsius heat) with a few of the more intrepid (insane!) members of the group whilst Emma joined the more sensible people who walked the 9km base route (all the way around). A few beers were consumed whilst watching the sunset make Uluru change colour. That night we slept (very soundly) in our swags...but not ... read more
