July 13, 2006 The rain was coming down, hard enough to wake me up as though I heard a gunshot. I was definitely psyched to run over to the mountain to see the falls, and let me tell you that I wasn’t disappointed. As I approached the ranger station with my park pass, I asked what the chances were of seeing the waterfalls, “ah, they need to have a lot of rain on the rock, not just in the area, and when the rain stops, the waterfalls stop shortly after.” I put my hand out the window, no rain, not for a few minutes. I slammed the clutch down and into gear, top gun style, and blasted over to the rock. By the time I arrived, it was pissing rain and the wind was blowing hard. ... read more

We didn’t leave Coober Pedy until 12.00 because I wanted to get a few more photos and see a few more of the sights. The drive from Cooper Pedy to Ayers Rock is 640 km so we intended to break the trip with an overnight stop at Erldunda which was 491 km. We arrived right on dusk and got the last spot left. We didn’t book because we didn’t think we needed to - Erldunda is hardly a tourist mecca - its just a petrol station with a café and caravan park/campground at the rear in the absolute middle of nowhere. Maybe the ‘hares’ won the race today. The next day we headed off to ‘the Rock’ and it was a record start to the day - we got away at 8.30 (partly because we didn’t ... read more

What I am about to write is not a type-o. Wake up alarm at 5:30am. It’s completely dark outside, it’s almost freezing- literally- I crawled off the top bunk, quiet not to wake the others who wouldn’t need to wake up for another five hours, and met my 4WD bus in the car park. Basically felt like I was being shipped off somewhere to be cooked, but then I remembered that I was in Ayers Rock and the only cookin’ around here is roo and wallaby- roo of which I ate last night… it was really nice, too! We whipped left and were jolted onto a dirt road. Immediately, I felt like a world rally driver flying through the desert on a nighttime rally course. Really, the driver didn’t seem to be the racer type- short, ... read more

It was easy to wake up today. Automatic. 7am felt like I was sleeping in. I made my way to the airport, with another friendly taxi driver to take me there, and before I knew it, I had gone from the great barrier reef to the red center of Australia. From the plan, I got my first glimpse of uluru- ayers rock. Pretty impressive, but reminded me a lot of Sedona, at least the color of the red rocks. I ran over to the thrifty car rental booth and grabbed the keys to my right hand drive, manual transmission Toyota…awesome!!! I had almost forgot how much I was looking forward to driving on the wrong side of the road, with the wheel on the wrong side, AND the stick on my left. Got the keys, and ... read more

With a blow on my Digeridoo - here we are at Ayres' rock - or Uluru in the local tongue. Apparently they don't use the Digeridoo in the North - but the rock is pretty amazing! It's a very weird (and a very Red) place. They got orgainised with tourism in 1984 - flattened the old hotels and built a new airport and resort outside the national park. As a result - it's nice, but expensive. They've got 4 or 5 different hotels catering to different bugets - but I think probably all run by the same central company - it's well laid out and there's a supermarket and a free shuttle bus around the resort... Any number of people will sell you a tour around either Uluru or Kata Juta which are both about 20/30 ... read more

Russell - Well we finally arrive in Yulara - the resort town built for tourists visiting Australia’s biggest icon - Uluru. Probably better known as Ayer’s Rock - it is, despite what the souvenir shops might say, the second biggest monolith in the world. (The biggest is in Western Australia, is twice as big and totally unknown). Of course no one is sure exactly how big it is as it as most of it is underground. But we were there to see what we could see and headed straight to the rock. We drove around it and took a look from all angles before heading to the sunset lookout. We were there early enough to get a good place as the area fills up pretty quickly. Fortunately though, coach parties are sent to a different look ... read more

This one is called Cock in a Frock Part II because Part 1 got so many hits just because of the title. Yes, there is a text blog for this one but I haven't gotten around to typing it up. I thought I would publish the photos anyway because isn't that what everyone wants anyway?... read more

We left Perth and the west coast of Australia - heading for the outback and a few days around Uluru (Ayers Rock). Our flight into Alice Springs was uneventful apart from an announcement that people on the right side of the plane should look out the window now. As we were on the right side we did and was rewarded with a fantastic aerial view of Uluru!! Some people paid fortunes for a helicopter ride but lucky us got the aerial view included in the flights! Next day we had the long drive to Uluru from Alice Springs - before we got there we stopped at the Olgas - a rock formation made from huge domes of rock. Had a walk inbetween two of the domes and they are absolutely massive! Then we headed to Uluru ... read more

We motored on, (it's a fair distance from Alice to Uluru you know!), and finally arrived for our days walk around King's Canyon, taking in the Lost City domes, the Garden Of Eden and the Winds walk. I had had high hopes for this place as people had told me it rivals Uluru in 'spectacularness'. The 'difficult' 3 hour walk was a piece of piss and 'Heart Attack Hill' a mere Hobbit hole of a mound. Though the canyon itelf was pretty large and contained some fantastic geology, I wasn't all that impressed. Driving, post-walk, we reached our destination: Ylara 'Resort'. It's a funny place, a bit like the Milton Keynes out of town car park just off the M1, built soley as accomodation for the Uluru sightseers and hostpitality workers. During the drive the whole ... read more

I was up at 6am to start my 750km journey to Uluru. With a couple of petrol stops I got there in 8 hours. Despite the very long journey it seemed to go by very quickly. Entering the Northern Territory means there are no longer speed limits on the highways so that was interesting. You certainly have to keep you concentration at 120mph!! The Lasseter Highway is the only road that connects the world to Uluru, and if it wasn't for our obsession with visiting it I’m sure it would still only be a gravel road. Along the length of the road there were 8 dead cows and a dead horse. Somewhere not to far away there are some badly dented cars!! The Ayres Rock resort grew out of no where to accommodate up to 5,000 ... read more
