On arriving at Uluru airport we were hit by humidity and attacked by flies! On the coach ride to the resort we saw the mighty Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) surrounded by desert. It was an impressive sight. Next morning we got up very early to see the Olgas at sunrise. We stopped at a lookout point to watch the sun rise over both the Olgas and Ayers Rock before heading to the Olgas to do a 7km walk. The walk has to be done early in the morning as after midday it is far too hot and the route is closed. We enjoyed the walk, except for being pestered by flies as nobody had told us we would need a fly net. We walked around and through the Olgas just before the ... read more

Well we awoke this morning at 4:30am which was just as well beause the other people ion our 20 bed dorm were all getting up to go on various tours etc so we wouldnt have got any sleep anyway. After showering and having brekkie we ventured the short distance (20km) to see Ayers Rock (Uluru in aboriginal name) and the sun rise at the rock. It was fairly dissapointing as the sun was rising from behing us (i.e. we were in between the rock and the sun) so I couldnt get any good pictures of the sun above the rock :( Although I hope you like the ones I did get! After waiting and letting sunrise pass us, we began a 10km base walk/hike which finally took us just short of 2 hours, the best way ... read more

Middle of Oz, 44 degree heat, hundreds, and I mean hundreds of flies wanting to suck every bit of moisture from your eyes or ears, but was it worth the sight of " THE ROCK " Yes, we'd say so.....amazing sight, absolutely massive in size.......... Won't bore you with the history, but a few pics to look at!... read more

We spent 3 days in the bush near Alice Springs. Our trip took us to Uluru, Kata Tjuta and King's Canyon. We slept in swags (it's like a canvas cocoon) under the stars. Fine if you are not worried about snakes, spiders, dingos and huge centipedes crawling into your sleeping bag!... read more

OK, well i am currently sitting at the desk of a computer in the eary evening hours on Thursday the 26th of January 2006. The 3 day tour of Ayers Rock and the other natural attractions in central australia ended about one hour ago. It was pretty memorable for all sorts of reasons and i am writing this diary entry in the hope that i will be able to capture the essence of everything that went on. The tour began at 6.30am on Tuesday, i found myself sat on a bus of 24 people ready for the trip. The tour guide announced that we would be going to Ayers Rock that very day and that this would be the main focus of the first day. The tour bus set off into the red centre and after ... read more

As part of our Round-the-World ticket, we were given a couple of 'free' internal flights within Australia. So we decided to fly to this Big Red Rock in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes known as Ayers Rock, sometimes known as Uluru (oo-la-roo) it really is quite extraordinary. The Rock itself is much bigger than I imagined. Nige has been here before, and we've all seen pictures of it, but it is very very big. Climbing the rock is now frowned upon and the local Aborigines (Anagu) ask you not to do it, although Nige walked up it eleven years ago. Instead we walked around some of the base which was great. Down the road are a group of smaller, but equally impressive group of rocks, The Olgas (Kata Tjuta meaning 'many heads'). In extreme heat, and ... read more

We caught our early morning flight to Alice Springs and then another flight to Ayers Rock to meet with our tour; Adventure Tours Uluru & The Olgas. We were met by Ryan, our tour guide, driver and altogether fab guy, who took us to camp, right on the outskirts of Uluru national park, where we met the others on the tour (approx 10 people in total) and had a quick lunch before driving into the park to see The Olgas, and walk around these enormous sandstone rock formations. We learn't a lot about geology from Ryan, who would explain each of the areas of interest whilst we were on the bus, and when we were walking around them. In a nutshell, The Olgas, and Ulurua (Ayers Rock) are massive sandstone structures, formed billions of years ago, ... read more

What is the best known natural wonder of Australia? Right, it's Ayers Rock. Today it's called Uluru again. That's the Aboriginal name. And where is it located? In Australia center, right in the middle. So you might think that's not far away from Alice Springs, mh? But it's still about a 450km drive, a little bit further south along Stuart Highway and somewhat west on Lasseter Highway. Mr. Lasseter was looking for gold in the desert west of Stuart Highway during the wild days. Nobody knows if he found some because he didn't come back. On the way you pass by Mt. Connor, another rock formation eroded out of the desert ground. And then finally, where the road ends in the middle of nowhere is Uluru. And Kata Tjuta. You never heard about it? I did ... read more

Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) are found in the middle of the baking hot desert, but luckily for me next to Yulara, a purpose built complex. I stayed on the campsite for $13 a night, but as one company owns the lot anybody within the complex can use any of the facilities. I am told that Uluru is the second most profitable tourist attraction in Australia behind the casino in Sydney……..I can see why. Everything costs; there are 101 ways to spend your money from the $25 park entrance fee to over $3,000 per night at Longitude 131. I went on a sunrise shuttle to Kata Tjuta and walked both the Valley of the Winds and Olga Gorge, and then a sunset tour of Uluru starting with a walk around the base. A ... read more
