Uluru Sunrise Not the most spectacular But took lots of pics! Our first activity of the day after breakfast today is to go see the sunrise by Uluru. Sunrise is at 7:23AM but we get there with plenty of time to spare. It is a crazy madhouse up at the sunrise viewing area...so many bus loads of tourists...who told them about this? haha Uluru, it is 9.4km around. 3.4 km climb up. 2.4km width. 7 km deep. How heavy is Uluru? One stone. HAHA I thought that was a good joke. We were given three options for this morning. 1) “The climb” if it is open. 2) 3/4 base walk around Uluru and see the sunrise from the base. or 3) Watch sunrise at the sunrise viewing area and then do the 1/2 base hike. Steep Kings Canyon Trek Red Centre of Oz is...Wow! I see Uluru. This morning was the first of many crazy early starts today. We were to be ready and waiting for our bus at 5AM outside of our hostel. Twelve of us were ready to go on time. We were just waiting for passenger #13. Our driver Amanda was kind enough to go up to his room and give him a wake up call...he didn't hear his alarm. So this is at about 5:15. I'm guessing at least another 30 minutes go by and he is still not down at the bus. Before we know it, it is 6AM and Amanda finally locates the newly dubbed "Mr. Sleep-in". I don't know, but if I knew I overslept and a bus was waiting for me I'd hurry ... read more

I first saw Uluru in sunset, Sunday evening. The first time I have heard of this place was about 8 years ago, in one of the travel magazines I used to read. I remember thinking that I will never get there: Australia is so far and even if I do get there, the rock is so far from anywhere else. But that Sunday I was standing there in front of this piece of rock and I was simply amazed. It's one rock! It's so big! Of course I wasn't alone there. Thousands of tourists shared the experience with me. But who cares, with beer in one hand and a camera in the other I stood there and appreciated the sight. The next morning we woke up early (surprising?) to watch the sunrise over Uluru and its ... read more

Uluru Blog: We made it to the "Heart of Australia"! It was and odd feeling leaving WA, sad on one hand after having such a fantastic time and having to say good bye to Auntie Pam, but excited on the other as we knew what was ahead was going to be all totally new to us both. The flight from Perth to Ayers was great. So wide and vast! The resort itself was a surprise. Not what we expected out in the middle of no where. 5 very nice hotels with swimming pools, shops, restaurants etc.. We were so glad we waited till we got here to book all the tours. If your planning on coming here don't book until you arrive it will save you money and will give you loads more options to choose ... read more

Okay, this will have to be short but here is a summary of my time in The Red Centre: Kata Tjuta National Park is home of Uluru or Ayers Rock (1325 square km and a peak of 546 m) and The Olgas or "many heads" (36 domes). It only rains 307.7 mm per year in Ayers Rock and I was there for some of it. The cloud coverage hindered a beautiful sunset and sunrise of Uluru which took some of the fun out of my journey. However, the 9.4 km walk around the base was well worth the trip. I had time for reflection, to enjoy the diversity of Uluru and even spot a dingo! Kings Canyon was the highlight of my travels into the Centre. It is located inside Watarrka National Park. We did a ... read more

Welcome to clean toilets (with toilet paper!!!!!), friendly people and hot showers (first one in 4 months!!!). After waiting to leave Indonesia for so long we finally arrived in Australia & immediately loved it. Ayers Rock was amazing, we didn't climb it out of respect: the aboriginal people view it as sacred & request that you don't. We also visited The Olgas, which were equally as awe inspiring, & King's Cannyon.....all were truly magnificent but we were plagued by the thousands of flies! ... read more

Today we had the option of climbing Uluru or walking around it. There are signs everywhere strenuously requesting that you don't climb the rock (it's a bit offensive to stomp all over what the aboriginals consider a sacred object) and yet a steady stream of tourists can be seen moving up and down. It's actually quite a dangerous climb, a woman died yesterday and they landed a helicopter on the rock to collect her. That was also a deterent. In addition, you can see a visible scar up the side where everyone climbs which is kind of sad. Jesse and I didn't climb. Instead we walked around the base with Paul and Clo who we met on our tour. The walk is 10km but completely flat. Uluru looks like a completely different rock from every angle. ... read more

I considered today to be my real birthday since it's the 25th at home. We were up at 4:30am in order to watch the sun rise behind Uluru (Ayers Rock). It was stunning!! After that we did a long hike around Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) which was much easier than the King's Canyon walk but equally impressive. We also drove around Uluru and looked at some Aboriginal rock paintings and heard some Aboriginal stories and learned a bit about what the rock means to them and how they used it. (There are still aboriginals living near the rock but they no longer go there because of all the tourists.) In the cultural centre there is a book of letters from people all around the world who have taken rocks from Uluru and then mailed them back ... read more
