Sorry it’s been awhile but we have been busy and in lots of remote places which don’t have the internet, most of the people out there probably don’t know what it is anyway. We headed to Normanton after leaving Cloncurry via the Burke and Wills Roadhouse. There was a bit to see around Normanton so we stayed for a couple of nights. Here is the place where the largest croc in the world was captured, measuring 28ft 4ins long. We did some swimming (in the pool), saw the famous Gulflander and the purple pub, bought some bait and got the fishing gear sorted before heading up to Karumba. What we didn’t realize is how busy Karumba can be! We couldn’t get a site. One caravan park was completely full, another had only one night available and ... read more

We decided to take advantage of our luck arriving in Katherine just when their annual show was on, and so we’ve stayed the last two days to see it. Bull and bronco riding, cattle wrestling, barrel racing (with horses and motorbikes) fireworks, amusement rides (many blow up, but some impressive portable scary ones). I think the rest stop may have helped my shoulder, which is still fairly sore despite lots of pills from the hospital in Alice . . . ... read more

What a gorgeous five days on the road. This is what I had dreamt it would be like. Got our CB radios working finally, so we can now both listen to music and talk to each other when we want as we ride. For the last 1200 kilometres we’ve been taking one to two hundred kilometre hops from one petrol station/bar/restaurant/campground “oasis” to the next, across beautiful, dry, almost “empty” (of people) countryside, past amazing rock formations, skeletons of historic telegraph stations and chest high termite mounds that look like friendly locals waving to us. We’ve passed many, many dead kangaroos (also flattened cows and wild pigs) hit at night by the thundering road trains (most cars and all 4WDs have giant bumper “roo” bars for night driving protection . . . we only ride from ... read more

Australasia By elluco May 8th 2007 On the road, and going as far as Katherine. Why? its on the way to Broom and people say its got a great gorge. Not much more to say on this place, got here typical oz outbacktown. Loads of aboriginals sitting round on their assed doing bugger all. Bloody hot, flies! Went on tourist trip, pretty good as gorges go, got off boat, ate, went to sleep, moved on! ... read more

Our first stop on arriving at Katherine was the jolly old tourist info - always great for some revitalising aircon if nothing else. We picked up the odd bit of advice about road conditions etc., but what mainly sticks in my mind were the warnings about going in or near the rivers in town. Why? Well, this is crocodile country and apparently a big (like 3m) salt water croc or salty, had been seen just below one of the town’s bridges in the last week and hadn’t been caught yet. Katherine has had some pretty awesome floods in its time and on one famous occasion a croc was seen swimming up the aisles of Woolworths in the High Street - puts a stop to petty theft I guess. Lexa was already having trouble sleeping in ... read more

I'm back! Sorry for the delay in the blogging! I know some of you have been wanting the next entry to help distract you from your work, so here goes! I also have made up for it by putting lots of photos on to keep you sweet. Still in Katherine with Andrew and still having the most fabulous time! Last night we went back to Katherine Gorge and camped there overnight. We took a few beers, i drank them a little too quickly and on an empty stomach. This, of course, resulted in me acting like a drunken idiot! Poor Andrew, but he had to see it at some time! - he was very amused and very sweet to look after me. After we had cooked dinner we heard a rustling in the rubbish bag. ... read more

It is so nice to be in one place and not keep moving hostel to hostel! Having such a good time staying with andrew in Katherine. Katherine is a small town, but has pretty much got everything you need. Anything extra you need, people tend to drive up to Darwin regularly and get stuff there. Life here is certainly more relaxed than back home....... we do stress too much!! Feels like 'real' australia here - i hate that term, its so cheesy, but its away from all the tourism of the east coast, is very hot and has that outback look so think i am justified in making that statement! Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) is a big attraction here. It comprises of 13 gorges, separated by rapids and carved out by the Katherine a river. We ... read more

So i'm back in the land of OZ. Met Andrew at the airport in Darwin and spent a couple of days seeing the city and meeting his friends. It is so seriously hot, nice to have some sun again! But no doubt i'll be moaning about the temperature again soon - thats the english way or the 'whinging pom' way as the aussies would say! Spent some time exploring the shops of Darwin and then went to a jumping crocodile show just outside Darwin. You get on a small metal boat and go out along the Adelaide River. They tie pieces of meat to a pole and the crocodiles jump out of the water to catch it. We are sitting in the boat a metre or so from these huge crocodiles jumping out the water! ... read more

I know you are all going to find this hard to believe, but I have had no success with the Barra… Although as a determined fisherman I must keep trying (sorry Janie). On Saturday we headed off to Lake Argyle to take in the view of the massive amount of water such a structure holds. Five times the size of Sydney Harbour, covers 1000 square kilometres over 120kms; this is some lake. Stopped in at the Durack homestead museum that demonstrates the contribution this pioneering family made to open the Kimberley region. After relaxing over a wood-fired BBQ lunch at the picnic area beside the Ord River, we saw quite a few freshwater Croc’s at the discharge area for the Hydro Scheme quite obviously waiting for their lunch to arrive through the tubes. Sunday saw ... read more
