I know you are all going to find this hard to believe, but I have had no success with the Barra… Although as a determined fisherman I must keep trying (sorry Janie). On Saturday we headed off to Lake Argyle to take in the view of the massive amount of water such a structure holds. Five times the size of Sydney Harbour, covers 1000 square kilometres over 120kms; this is some lake. Stopped in at the Durack homestead museum that demonstrates the contribution this pioneering family made to open the Kimberley region. After relaxing over a wood-fired BBQ lunch at the picnic area beside the Ord River, we saw quite a few freshwater Croc’s at the discharge area for the Hydro Scheme quite obviously waiting for their lunch to arrive through the tubes. Sunday saw us head out on a local 4X4 track to see Black Rock Falls. A very fine mist of water falling from around 50 metres up set against a black rock face stained over time. There was a small water hole here but decided against a dip due to the murky colour (and Jane’s ever present awareness of Croc’s). On our way back we stopped in
Gibb River Road
One eyed Boab supporter at Ivanhoe Crossing’s southern bank to try again for a Barra, again no luck. Up early Monday to head out to El Questro Station and Emma Gorge Resort (off the Gibb River Road) for an overnight stay in one of their Safari Tents. After checking in at about 10am we were recommended to visit a spot called Zebedee Springs which is a thermal spring with constant water temp around 37 degrees and crystal clear. This place has literally thousands of palm trees scattered amongst the large boulders that make up the separate pools as the water flows down the gully. Unfortunately the springs close to the public at 12pm to allow for tourist groups to enjoy the area, so after an hour of soaking our bones we reluctantly jumped in the car and went to the station village for lunch. You can also stay in this area of the station in Bungalows or just camping, there is plenty of grass and the Pentecost River was flowing nicely. Although there is more action at the townsite, which would suit the camping lifestyle, we preferred Emma Gorge as it is very peaceful with the sound of the water flowing outside your room

Looking forward to a swim and lush grassed areas surrounded by all manner of local vegetation. Upon returning to Emma Gorge after lunch we decided to do the walk to the falls, and as always with these things we do them in the middle of the blazing afternoon… The climb to the falls was fairly arduous with many rocks and boulders along the path. As you approach the falls the gorge narrows from around 50 metres wide to about 20, this combined with the falls themselves makes the temperature a little more bearable. After reaching the top there was the obligatory swim. Very, um, refreshing… Back to the room for a well deserved beer and shower before a very tasty dinner at the on site restaurant. This place could well have been in any capital city as the food was divine; wish we could have stayed longer to sample some more delights. Up with the sparrows (hangover in tow) and back to Zebedee for a more relaxing dip, this time around 2 hours!! Back to the main road and a quick trip into Wyndam as it was only 40kms. Apart from the lookout over the rivers and inlet, this place does not have a lot

Janie soaking up this beautiful place going for it so headed back to Kununurra. Wednesday saw us on the road again, this time heading for Katherine. It is around a 500km trip and though we have done more than this in one day we decided due to the time difference of one and a half hours we would stop on the way. Sullivan’s campsite in the Gregory National Park was to be the place. Clean with lots of space and a small water hole close by made for a relaxing stop, but talk about flies… if you weren’t careful these buggers could have made off with a couple of kilos of chops no worries. Up at a reasonable time and on to Katherine. This place is something you will only understand if you have been here… no more said. So we are off into the wilderness to stay at Nimiluk National Park for a couple of nights, and take in the scenery that Katherine Gorge has to offer. Hope all is well and please stay in touch as it is great to hear how every one is doing. More soon
