So we arrived in Byron Bay with plans to camp on the beach for 3 days. It sounded like a great plan, except for one thing. When we were checking into the campsite, the attendant told us that they were expecting hail storms that evening and maybe we should re-think the camping idea. No need to say that twice to me, so we picked a cabin and everything was cool. I think Chris still wanted to camp but I was getting a cabin no matter what, even if I was by myself in the cabin. The cabin contained one double bed, one single bed over the double bed (like a bunk bed), a TV and a small fridge. Washrooms were a 2 minute walk from the cabin. Washrooms were very clean, better than the hotel in ... read more

This is a special update strickly focussed on diving. I know this is a strange place for it. You think we might have included it in the section about Port Douglas and the Great Barrier reef but this dive site blew us away (Thanks to Gord for recommending it). We decided to stay right in South West Rocks after Sarah went diving in Byron Bay and one of the other divers suggested it as opposed to the bigger city of Port Macquarie that we were considering. I won't say anything else about Sarah's dive trip in Byron, even though it was great, accept that she saw a green sea turtle, face-to-face about 3 ft away. South West Rocks is a really quiet, really small tourist town. We were able to get a nice two bedroom apartment ... read more

The Blue Parrot Hostel is a small, friendly place in Potts Point, Sydney. I came to Sydney a wiery, tired and penniless traveller. When I walked through the door on September 12st 2005 I was welcomed by one of the owners, Andrew. I felt completely at ease seeing that I was tired he quickly got the formalities over and done with and showed me around the hostel. It struck me straight away how cosy and comfortable the place seemed to be. A TV lounge (although the TV is not overbearing) and a free internet terminal in the corner. The Kitchen had plenty of space for all my (limited) cooking needs. The rooms too were clean and spacious and i quickly had a power nap before coming back downstairs eager to see the sights of Sydney. Andrew ... read more

The road trip portion of our trip has begun! We picked up our rental car (Toyota Camry) at the Brisbane airport and we'll have it until we fly out from Sydney. It's great to have a car for the rest of our trip - now we don't have to lug everything around - we can just leave it in the trunk. We ended up staying one more night at Gord and Sheryl's place in Brisbane. We had been pushing Nathan pretty hard over the past few days, so we thought we'd give him a day off to nap and play at their apartment while Nancy took a hop-on hop-off bus around Brisbane. We had a nice dinner with Gord, Sheryl and Sally and got in once last game of Wizzard. We've already made plans to meet ... read more

Hello from down under! We are having a great time. The weather has been very nice - very warm but with a breeze. It is, however, the fly season. Those pesky little buggers fly around you and follow you as you are walking. You can slap at them all you want (which is what is affectionately known as the "Aussie wave"), but they know what they are doing as they are professionals. Perhaps I could teach them a little something about beer. We purchased a three day pass that allowed us to board the Sydney Explorer and Bondi Beach Explorer busses. The pass also granted us access to all bus, train, tram, and ferry systems in the city. It was a great deal. The Explorer busses took a little over two hours from the first to ... read more

I must say it is with some humility that I present the third (and final) installment of First Principles. I was hoping against hope that I would not have to feature myself on this blog but the response has been so overwhelming - and humbling - that I feel it is only fair to the Lower Grades to include a small photo essay about FSL. The emails, phone calls, telegrams, and faxes that have been streaming into Buster HQ all seem to shout the same demand - "We want to know more about Frank!" And who am I to deny what is so passionately desired? I think by now it is obvious to everyone that Tez is the accountant of the Busters and Joe is the stomach of the Busters and so, please enjoy: The Heart, ... read more

A Word on Words and an Exciting Purchase It’s not hard to get understand people here, most words are what you think they are. The words that are different are more just quaint than totally bizarre. For example here we say prams, instead of strollers. And ‘hire’ when you mean rent, or hail, or lease. For example, “On the way back from Bronte Beach, Abby’s pram snapped in half so we had to hire a cab to go to the baby store and purchase a new one.” Diapers are ‘nappies’, naps are ‘sleeps’, grocery carts are ‘trolleys’ and coffee with milk is ‘flat white’. Ok that last one is a bit odd. Also flip-flops are thongs, and that can be a little dicey if you aren’t careful. A convenient one is mince which is the word ... read more

Well folks, Just a quick update to let you all know what is going on. Bec and I arrived back home in Australia late on a friday night and our mate Matt (and his darling wife Lara) picked us up from Sydney airport - owe ya one buddy. We stayed the night there and then went back to my parents place at Wyong just in time for my sister Carly's 30th birthday party. You should have seen the look on her face - she thought I was going to be in Canada for a few more months. The look was priceless and totally worth all that evil deception that I am so against ;) So the party was good but I was very jet lagged and no drinks were had and I was the first to ... read more

Greetings to what will be my last travel blog entry, yes I know its sad we had this conversation last time. lol Flew back to where it all began 3 months ago, sydney, on Saturday from the smallest international airport Ive ever seem: Christchurch. There were approximately 2 flights leaving for the whole afternoon and they were both to Sydney. Back in the same hostel I was in when I first arrived, the lovely YHA Railway Square and this time my room has ensuite shared between 8 of us in the room. I suppose this is the closest Ill ever get to feeling what it was like to like in the slums of Stafford sharing one toilet between 50 (or is that a slight exaggeration?!) First day I went back to Manly, which is a lovely ... read more
