Well, we're finally ready to wind up our trip in Australia, and boy was it eye-opening! When last we wrote, we were in Airlie Beach getting ready to take a bus trip to Brisbane, en route to Sydney to ready ourselves for Asia. The bus ride from Airlie to Brisbane was approximately 17 hours, and while we had the opportunity to hop off at any time we decided to power through. Honestly, by this point we are getting tired of the small, backpacker-filled beach towns----the east coast is one beach town after another---and welcome the bustle (and perks) of city life. Really, the whole east coast is a dream destination for single partiers aged 18-23, and as neither of us fit into that category anymore, it is often difficult to meet (or desire to meet) other ... read more

*sigh* So much diversity and stimulation... So much opportunity and wonder... Paramatta to Bondi: A long-time friend's union with love to sunny sculptures by the sea... The colour around is beauty within... hey this is sounding more and more ethereal by the day eh? Just something to get up here so I can share the visuals!!! Oh and I must say, I really am enjoying my little world within the Utopian Luscious Beatnik :) It truly is just like coming home every night... as I approach him with keys in hand, I feel my haven near, I am coming home... Thanks to all C's efforts again - a really wonderful and generous heart he has. ... read more

We arrived in Sydney on Nov 3rd. After such interesting navigating, we managed to find our hotel/apartment building. It was about a 10 minute walk from the outskirts of downtown. For those that know Vancouver, picture you apartment being on Hastings, just one block before Hastings turns into the really bad part of town. On Thursday afternoon, after checking into the hotel and taking a little break, I decided to head out for a walk and walk I did. It was about a 60 minute walk from our apartment to the Sydney Opera House. I got my bearings straight, checked out an internet cafe and planned my activities for Friday and Saturday. On Friday me and the family went to the Sydney Aquarium. We spent about 2 hours there and I was a bit disappointed. I ... read more

Up To Your Ankles in Ducks and Other Animal Adventures Each week Abby and I like to take a ‘field trip’. Nothing fancy, just something other than going to the beach or the mall or to a different beach. Our most recent excursion was to the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG). The RBG is located right, smack, in the center of the city. Much like Central Park is for NYC. Les’ office is actually only one block away from the west entrance and we’ve meandered through it a time or two before. But on this recent outing Abby and I got serious about exploring the RBG. That means we brought lunch. Well I’m not sure if I can say enough about how fabulous the RBG is. It’s different from Central Park, or the Boston Commons (let alone ... read more

A bit of a drive in the Australian Bush, just over 2000 kms through the Gibraltar Ranges and New England. Some of these pictures are pure Australiana. Starting off with a few road signs that you will not generally see in any other country. In front of the third sign is a flood level indicator, this provides for water up to two metres deep, useful if you are trying to figure out if it is safe for you to drive through; we often do get those levels of floodwater in the annual big wet. Northern New South Wales is a very suitable area for growing fruit, unf... read more

Hail, Buster Fans everywhere! 36 days to go and the atmosphere is pregnant with expectation. What will the Busters discover this time? Who will they meet? What unrestored monument will they walk on? How many types of beer will they consume? Thought you might just need a little update on the organisational progress so far. FSL: Tickets in hand, Visas in passport, Original Buster backpack fumigated, US$ about to be purchased. Tez: Tickets on order, visas yet to be cleared, nice new suitcase, Platinum AMEX ready to go. Joe: Has found his comb. Shanghai Surprise VL has allegedly "busted" some minor Chinese city with the aid of her manservant. (see First Principles Pt. 3 comments) Hope she took her red jumper for those chilly nights. Unfortunately she is 3 days too late to be considered in ... read more

We arrived in the lovely and very dead town on South West Rocks, the day before the Melbourne Cup. We did not have a pre-arranged place to stay, so we headed to the tourist information spot. They sent us to this "not-so-nice" motel. After passing on the motel, we went across the street and Sarah and I went into a real estate holiday place. We immediately were able to get a 2 bedroom apartment, one block from the beach and at a cheaper rate ($60 per night) than the seedy motel. After arranging the apartment, we headed to the local dive shop and booked a dive trip for the next day. Sarah and I were going to do 2 dives, one of them being a cave dive. I have never dove at night so I was ... read more
