After loading up several Eskys and cooler bags, we set off from Lee and Sarah's house (Crow's Nest) in a cab at midday to get a good spot at Cremorne Point located on the North Shore of Sydney Harbour. The views from where we were sat were fantastic, could see both the Opera House and Sydney Bridge. Weather was 35 and sunny...we were baking. Thousands of people were already there, with food, drinks, tents, bbqs etc set for the day and night. A friend of Lee's, Tim, otherwise known as Septic Tank - Yank joined us and later on Chris T. To cool off we swam in Sydney Harbour which was so cool with an amazing view of the CBD, opera house etc. Spen was filmed in the harbour by a TV crew in a water ... read more

And so we see another year come and go! sad to say that I still feel as young as I did when I was 17, yet the years keep on rolling by. Spent the last day of 2005 on glorious Main beach in Byron, just for a change! As per usual we tackled the waves and displayed our flesh as we tried desperatley to keep a hold of our dignity as the naughty dumpy waves whipped off our bikinis! Oh the delights of the beach! Byron Bay has been an incredible place and we have been so lucky to stay here for as long as we have, just short of two weeks now. Plus we've been fortunate enough to enjoy both Christmas and New Year here too. After spending many an hour on the beach in ... read more

Ive finally made it to Sydney and have met up with Gil and Laura. Its so crazy to be on the road again and be with friends and in hostels. I'd got far too comfortable in Lori's backhouse in California and then at Kathy's in Adelaide but Sydney beckoned and the girls had been hanging around for 5 weeks waiting for New Year. We're staying in a Sydney suburb called Manly, its a 45 minute ferry ride from the City Centre. After a plane ride and a train ride I boarded the ferry and it pulled out of the harbour in time to see the sun setting behind the Opera House and the CBD. The sun shone through the skyscrapers and made the Opera House glow, it was totally stunning. On my flight from LA I ... read more

Sar, Lee and us two set off from Crow's Nest and caught the bus into town to Darling Harbour. Just divine! Fab yachts, cool bars and resturants all set on the harbour. We went to Sydney Aquarium for a couple of hours, to see all the Great Barrier Reef fishes, seals, sharks, sting rays, turtles and penguins. All in really nice big settings with breeding programmes. Had lunch at James Squire micro brewery on the harbour, and shopping in the mall for a cool off. Then Debs headed back with Sar and Lee to Crow's Nest to shop for NYE food and drink, and had a fish BBQ. Spen went back to Manly for a 40th birthday drinks with Chris.... read more

Up early so we could set off early to be able to get a good spot with a view of the bridge. We had heard that people camp out to be at the front! We had choosen a spot where you were allowed to bring your own alcohol otherwise it would cost a fortune. So we setted off in the boiling heat armed with about 4l of water the same in wine, lots of food and a brolly. We got to the park (Embarkation park) at 11.30am and the gates didn't open until 5pm. Also they only let in 3000. There were people down on the grass queuing but we thought we would go and look at the actual gate, to see the queue. There was no one there, so we sat on the pavement and ... read more

Sun 25th Dec - Fri 30th Dec ...not really! This Christmas…quite different from the usual cold wet ones I’m used to...I'm melting!! Managed to get down to Coogee Beach for the afternoon with new buddy, Irish Erika - loveliest girl ever! (gotta write that cuz she might be reading this!) she can sure talk the hind legs off a donkey but that’s the Irish for you! Anyway, having spent the afternoon sunbathing, eating and talking rubbish at Coogee, we headed over to Bondi that evening to meet up with some of Erika’s mates - much to our despair, all the pubs closed early - how can that be we cried…it’s Christmas, they need to stay open cuz we wanted a drink! But seeing as that wasn’t going to happen, we ended up having fish and chips ... read more

Boxing Day 26.12.05 After breakfast we jumped on the bus outside our hotel for a 20 minute ride south to Coogee beach. Here we spent the whole day lying in the sun and chilling. This is a similar beach to Bondi and today there was little surf so we were able to swim which was good as it was so hot. 27.12.05 Today we went sale shopping on George Street. I (Mel) got a Billabong vest top and Andy got a smart t shirt/shirt. We went to the cinema after this to see Wolf Creek. (do you want to know what it's about?) It's about 3 backpackers that get captured, tortured and 2 of them murderd by a crazed, psychopathic, mad bushman in the Australian outback, and guess what?? It's based on a true story! What did we do on Christmas day I hear you ask? Well we went over to an area of Sydney called Manly and went for a swim in the sea of course! And naturally we had a BBQ back at our hostel with Lobster, prawns, various meats and champagne! Well it was christmas day! No BBQ on the beach unfortunately as there was a total fire ban and being in a new country and not knowing the laws we didn't want to get arrested on christmas day! To get to Manly we had to take a ferry across the beautiful sydney harbour and on Christmas day we had our first sighting of Sydney's most famous landmarks - The Harbour bridge and the opera house! Another reason Sydney is famous is that it has the largest natural ... read more

We were lucky enough to be invited by Alun and Cath Kelly (nee Lynsky) to spend Christmas with them in Newcastle. Cath and Alun are also doing a "round the world" trip and just happen to be in NSW at the same time as us, stopping off with their relatives in Newcastle. The train ride from Sydney to Newcastle took us over and past lots of rivers, inlets and eucalyptus forests. We arrived after a 2 hour trip and were met by the Wilson family - Cath's cousins. South African friends of theirs lent us their house to stay in, a beautiful home with a cottage in the garden and a swimming pool - felt like we had our own little resort! Our first evening was spent having a bbq on the banks of Lake Macquarie ... read more
