Getting ready to head to the airport to fly to New Zealand. Had a great day yesterday, ran along the Sydney Harbour (hot/humid - but beautiful scenary), walked Botanical Gardens, then took the Sydney Opera House Tour - have some great pictures of that, maybe get to post later :). Then headed out on the ferry to Manly Beach, hung out on the beach and then had dinner and drinks at a restaurant outside by the beach. Long day - but very fun. If I am lucky enough to get internet in New Zealand, will post some pictures. Good day Mate!... read more

We headed into the city first this morning to check out a cathedral. We had decided in the morning that we didn't need our rain jackets but sure enough once off the train at the cathedral it was raining. But we continued on and walked in the cathedral. I had decided to stay in Sydney a couple of days longer after mom and dad leave so we walked over to the YHA in Central Sydney and I booked in there. I was a bit unsure about wanting to just stay out in King's Cross on my own even though there are lots of hostels there. The YHA is a really nice one in a good area so I opted for that. We headed back down to Circular quay to catch our ferry to Manly. The path ... read more

Dort konnte man verschiedene Pflanzen sehen.

The Pink View Australia - epic, like the movie? For me, no. The joy of our visit to this gigantic country was not the country itself but the opportunity to catch up with friends and family. After nearly 5 months on the road, it has been an absolute delight to see familiar faces, some of which we haven't seen for quite some time. Australia, itself, left me feeling rather underwhelmed. I think that this was in no small part due to the unbelievable expense of doing anything here. We were lucky enough to be given a bed every night for which we are immeasurably grateful but, even that, did little to stem the daily haemorrhage of cash. My tip top advice for anyone visiting Oz in the near future is save, save, save! I do ... read more

23 January 2011 I am becoming extrememly fond of being awoken by the sun's rays and this morning was no exception. The by product of this fondness is that we are also awoken daily before 8am and, remarkably, I really don't mind. It seems that in Manly (and, I suspect, only in Manly) I have turned into a morning person. There were two important happenings in the pot for today - one important for us, and the other important for Anna. We had been invited to Katherine and Andrew's house for brunch and Anna have been invited to appear on TV. Katherine is one of the girls that I rowed with at Law School what now seems like many moons ago. She is currently living in Old Cremorne in Sydney with her husband and baby ... read more

Dear all, You will be pleased to know that couchsurfing has far exceeded any expectations that I may have had regarding it. We have obviously just been very jammy with our first one! We have a large beachside apartment at our disposal and a lot of food and drink to be had! Mhairi and I have spent the majority of the last week having big breakfasts on the balcony and enjoying coastal walks. Yesterday I dragged Mhairi along the Coogee to Bondi (2-3 hour) walk! She loved it really! We have been to some nice bars too, 1st night was the IVY which has a rooftop pool area, though it was pouring with rain! There was a cool old guy in red jacket and shoes dancing in the rain. We then went out in Manly on ... read more

21 January 2011 We awoke again to glorious sunshine streaming in through the open French doors next to our bed. We already had a plan for the day, the displaced idea from yesterday - namely to go to the world famous Bondi beach. We also wanted to try another of the ferry services to/from Watson’s bay and our first decision of the day was which order to do our visiting. We headed out onto the Manly ferry and headed into Circular Quay. En route passing a huge empty tanker of some kind that dwarfed our ferry, and the ferries aren’t that small. We got to Circular Quay and our timing meant it far more sensible to come home via the other ferry as opposed to head that way now, with this in mind we got ... read more

19 January 2011 It seems that we have learnt, in two short days, how to arise early. Since it is warm, we are sleeping with the sliding doors in Adam & Anna’s lounge wide open and a gap in the curtains that bathes me in sunshine the moment that the sun comes up. That, combined with the continuous soundtrack provided obligingly by the ocean means that arising early has become a joy rather than a chore. The plan for today was to head out to Palm Beach. This particular beach is not only beautiful, but also the location where most of the beach scenes for Home & Away are shot. Ok, I admit it, I am a closet Home and Away watcher (which is currently suspended for the summer break here so I haven’t seen ... read more

17 January 2011 Our last morning in Woolongong had arrived, we surfaced early enough to say our goodbyes to our very generous hosts, but not so early as to take Lydia up on her very kind offer of dropping us to the train station at the same time as she was dropping her dad (7:15 is a bit too much for us). We put our stuff together in our packs and took our stroll to the bus stop for the first part of the journey, in glorious sunshine. Moving days are however the one type of day when you actually hope for a bit of cloud so you don't start sweating the minute you don your pack. This was not to be and the morning showers were deemed irrelevant about 5 minutes after stepping out ... read more

Merry Christmas everyone, hope you all had a lovely day. So we are now staying The Rocks YHA and it is amazing. We are in a 6 bed female dorm with an en-suite shower and toilet. The room is massive. We are also on the top level and you can walk out of our room and see the Opera House. From the roof terrace you can see out across Sydney - so cool. So we when out to a pub on Christmas Eve wearing our Santa hats and had a wicked night. Met some really cool people in the hostel. The Rocks is a really nice part of Sydney, lots of pubs, cafes and restaurants. Christmas day we spent on Manly beach, we went against the norm as most backpackers head to Bondi. We woke up ... read more
