Over the last few days Jim and I headed south of Sydney to the Jarvis Bay area. About 300k from Sydney the scenery reminds me a lot of Cornwall, very green, quaint, rolling hills, windy beaches, strange old people… We have had 4 sessions on the water since my last update. All of them a success, I love the warm water even if it does mean having to deal with the odd Jelly. One session at Botany bay near where Jim had his accident, and a couple on 7 Mile Beach which as you can imagine is a very big beach were we camped for 3 days. (Slingshot Advert on 7 Mile Beach). This was really a test of our camping kit, to find out what we need, and we have pretty much got everything, although ... read more

Odds And Ends Feb 19, 2006 Things are winding down here. We’ve started packing and stopped buying the largest size of milk. We are also mostly eating takeout food again as we transition out of a permanent residence to just-passing-through status. Naturally it is now, as we are about to leave, that I finally bought my one billionth smoothie and was promoted to the VIP level. It was all very exciting. I was given a free smoothie (extra jumbo size) and I received a VIP card that will give me 10% off for the rest of my life. I also get a free smoothie on my birthday. Whoohoo! Too bad my birthday is 12 days after we leave the country. Still, it’s nice to be a VIP if only for a few days. I don’t suppose ... read more

So it's almost time to say good-bye to Australia and the sun has finally come out, which will make it even harder to leave! Although I don't seem to be able to tan in this country as you have to use factor 30 all the time! I can't believe how quickly time has flown this past two weeks but I have done sooooooo much! I've also met a few Stopgap candidates along the way who seem to remember my name from when they were in the UK, which is hilarious but annoying as they all keep asking me for an advance! I spent the last week in Cairns where I completed my advance diving qualification... yep, I can now go down 30 meters and do night dives! It was amazing, I went on a 3 days ... read more

Feb 8, 2006 Well I started this blog out today intending it to be primarily about Frangipani flowers as a local fashion statement. But that’ll have to wait. Today I encountered the Australian Medical System and, as a card carrying member of the “10 Times or More” club, a group that counts how many times the American HMO/PPOs have made them burst into tears out of sheer frustration, I am obligated to recount the following. I’m in the middle of the three part Hepatitis B shot series. It’s required by Massachusetts state law for everyone attending any sort of school - - I need it for my Masters. I had the first shot in America and needed to get the second down here. But I’ve put it off because the thought of slogging through red tape ... read more

Well, when we took off from Heathrow on a dull and grey English morning Jim was still without visa. He decided to chance it and fly anyway, though there was a good chance he would be turned back, or detained for extensive anal examination upon arrival. I managed to persuade the overworked BA check in guy that Kitesurfing kit is sporting equipment and that it should be treated as a windsurfer which travel free. So I got my 25kgs of boards and kites on without paying what would have been £100 extra baggage. The Quantas 747 is pretty close to a sardine can, particularly when you are 6ft 3”. On takeoff the pilot apologised that the entertainment system (on which I had carefully planned 25hours of films to watch), was broken, all it would show as ... read more

Hey everyone... So what they say about the sun in Australia is true... It was a half cloudy half sunny day...in the end it was just sunny. Put SPF 30 sunscreen 3 times in 3 hours and got burned....Well I've seen worst but I'm pretty red right now and obvisouly, none of it is actually equal...Anyways, i guess it's part of the deal!! I'm putting lots of after sun cream to recover fully. Phil's happy i'll finally have a tan. I'd been avoiding the sun for the first 2 weeks, too intense. But the beach was kind of the place to tan, no? So,Went to Bondi beach today which was a half hour bus ride from our hostel....Really nice beach with lots and lots of people....The waves were pretty big, which is perfect for surfing. I ... read more

Days 84-87 Today we headed to Bondi (a 30 minute bus ride from central Sydney) to chill out on the beach for a bit. We checked into the hostel which was a bit rubbish so looked for a different one to book for the next couple of nights. The sun then decided to come out so we spent the afternoon sunning ourselves on the beach. We got showered up and then had fish and chips by the beach. We walked off our meal along the beachfront then went back to the sweaty smelly hostel and played cards for a bit. The next day was gorgeous and once we checked in to our new hostel we headed straight for the beach. The waves were really big and powerful and really knocked into you but it was good ... read more

Feb 1, 2006 In Which My Worst Fear Is Realized It happened last night at precisely 10:14pm. I got ready for bed, turned off all the lights in the apartment, walked into our room and started fluffing the pillows when out of the corner of my eye I saw something that Should Not Be. A Huntsman Spider. On the wall above Les’ dresser. Five inches or so across. With cat-like movements, (by which I do not mean the graceful sort, but rather the extreme spazzing sort where a cat can jump into the air and propel itself across a room), I found myself in our kitchen grabbing my cell phone. Why? Oh, did I forget to mention, Les was still at work and I was alone . . .only not alone at all. The conversation went ... read more

It's another 'bobby-dazzler' down here (bright, sunny, day in Oz-Speak). We already hit the beach this morning before the crowds descended. I suppose that's one of the advantages to the early morning routine that a toddler demands. We don't get to sleep in, but we do get to hang out at the beach nice and early. So a few bits of fun news from our camp. First, The Beverly Citizen, a local newspaper from our hometown back in the U.S., has started running a series of columns that I'm writing about life down here. Of course they are mostly just shortened versions of my favorite blog entries - - let me know which ones you've liked the best so far and which ones I should, under no circumstances, consider reusing! The bigger, more exciting announcement this ... read more
