This morning we were back on the road just after 9.00am heading for Bathurst. With our watches encouraging us to stand and move for a minute every hour we have been trying to factor in a leg stretch after we have been driving for an hour. We had been aiming to make our first stop at Cootamundra, but when we spotted the sign for the Bethungra Rail Spiral viewing platform we thought, why not check something out while we stretch our legs?! The heritage-listed Bethungra Rail Spiral was built in the 1940s to address a bottleneck on the main rail route between Sydney and Melbourne and is one of Australia's most significant rail engineering feats of its time. Listed as historically and scientifically rare, the spiral is of great historical significance due to the ambition and ... read more

Day 12 (15/4/21)Temps: Max 25C, Min 8C Rest day today & time to update the Blog which takes a couple of hours or more. So much to write about & lots of photos to upload. Also sitting down & going through the things we will likely do in Bathurst next week & reading about local attractions while on the internet. Cooking a mid afternoon lunch/dinner of a roast leg of lamb, jacket potatoes & roast pumpkin, carrots, peas & beans. Day 13 (16/4/21)Temps: Max 23C, Min 9C Up early to get some 10L bottles of water to take to Bathurst tomorrow as most of the tap water is awful; using that for washing up only. Went to the Old Dubbo Gaol which is right in the middle of the main street. Read about some horrific crimes ... read more

We’ve not moved a lot this week, as we’ve only traveled from Canberra to Dubbo, but it’s been fun. The land is generally well-farmed, which we judge by the standard of the farm houses and machinery. Gently rolling, mostly sheep, with some cropping and some cattle. Little bit of grapes and others, too. The countryside is fairly hilly in the east, and flattens slowly the further west you go. Wagga Wagga, known to the locals as Wagga, has about 40,000 people and is the largest inland town in NSW. It is on the Murrumbidgee River and is almost exactly half way between Sydney and Melbourne. We took a drive out to Narrandera which is inside the fruit fly exclusion zone, so had to dump a few apples. There was no inspection, so don’t know how it ... read more

We finally headed out from Beardy Creek on Wednesday after three days of sitting in the sun thawing out after being frozen overnight in the van. At the same time as we were sitting in the sun reading the van had all windows open with the fan blowing air through to dry the ice from the previous night. At 3:45pm each day we would retreat inside again to recommence the icing process. Even so we would recommend this site for free camping, but have your own porta potti for summer. There is a 48 hour limit – we stayed 72 hours! We had been so bone idle we had not even bothered to do any sightseeing or even going into Glenn Innes to buy bread or fresh vegetables preferring to live off the cruskettes and vegetables ... read more

DAY 373 I awoke with terrible cramp in my calf muscle, I rubbed it for ages before it calmed down and went back to normal. I had a glass of water beside me, it was a warm night so I drank it down with ease and eventually went back to sleep. I knew Andy had already got out of bed, it was daylight already but I was tired so carried on sleeping, we had a late night last night and after all that travelling a small lie in was deserved. I finally succumbed to the daylight at 7.30 and got up. I remembered that Andy told me when he went out to the truck this morning, he noticed that overnight someone had “egged” it, the egg was spattered over the rear, the drivers window and wing ... read more

I leave Australia for New Zealand on Saturday, so I thought I’d better update my blog. The highlight of my time in Australia has been my tussle with a pine log on my fourth working day, that left me with a broken arm. It’s ironic that in all my battles with the killer trees of Africa, I have suffered no serious injury (just lost gallons of blood), but a soft Aussie tree gets the better of me. It has also meant that I have been unable to use the long lens on my camera to get wildlife shots. The best of the wildlife that I have been seeing is the birds. The various parrots and cockatoos are amazing and common. I have seen clouds of sulpher crested cockatoos taking off from the meadows as our vehicle ... read more

Well, here I am in Australia and settled into my project in Bathurst, near Sydney, (only four hours away). I’ve been in Oz for twelve days now and I’ve got another four weeks to do. Still, the convicts had to stay for a lot longer, so it’s not so bad. Up to now, I’ve just been doing the tourist thing with Anna, which has been a wonderful time. Where to start on my first Aussie blog? I know, South Africa. There were a few interesting things that happened after my last blog, (well they were interesting to me, anyway) so behave and listen up while I tell you about them. On the Saturday night before I left, had a very disturbed night as something was digging around m caravan. After twenty minutes, the dogs started barking ... read more

Well the attempt to get a tandem worked for 2 days and then the paint fell off. No replacement available and could we wait whilst it was sent to the US to get a paint job. We ended up with two separate touring bikes and headed off on the train to start our trip outside of Sydney in a place called Emu Plains. We arrived fine and started to put up the tent just before the rain set in. John then turned to me with the brand new tent pole in two pieces. I went back to the bike to get some tape to tie it together, on returning it was now in four separate pieces. OK off to get it fixed. No such luck. Our super duper tent was not the sort of thing they ... read more
