Left Canberra and spent whole day driving to Lightning Ridge and stayed there for two nights. Did a tour, place is a bit of a mess but interesting none the less. Had a fossick but didn't find any Opal of value. Shell, didn't see Ian up here, we assume he still has a mine up here. From Lightning Ridge we headed to Roma. Roads are very flat and hardly any traffic. One night in Roma which was the first Gas discovery in Australia and is still pumping. Then off to Carnarvon Gorge and spent a couple of nights here. Magnificent place, plenty of walking and lots of photos (although our photos don't do it justice) Off to the Gemfields at Emerald to find a sapphire for Michelle. Lots of hard work with no return after ... read more

Finally the cover has arrived so we are hitting the road tomorrow with first stop either Lightning Ridge or Port Macquarie. The weather will dictate whether we travel up the Great Inland Way or stick to the coast. Take care all and we will post photos or notes wthin the week hopefully. Cheers John and Maree... read more

As lift-off gets closer, Bec and I are getting more and more excited about our big trip to South America. Wardrobes have been ransacked, outdoor shops have drawn muffled gasps (at pricetags), $USD has been purchased and nerves have been frayed. But we are getting closer to fitting our "must-haves" into our cases (surely I'll need more shoes???). We leave Sunday for a night in Sydney, flying out on Monday morning. First stop after 16 hours on the plane, a six hour layover in Santiago, Chile, then another four hours flying to Lima. Time in Peru is 15 hours behind Canberra. We have a couple of days in Lima to try and recover from jet lag before joining our first tour to discover the Inca heritage, flying to Cuzco - South America's oldest continuously inhabited city ... read more

It's always strange to think that you won't be seeing the place that you call home for a good 6 months. My home is Canberra, the capital of Australia (no matter what people from other countries may think - believe me, I live here). It may seem boring to a lot of people, heck, sometimes it seems boring to me. Especially when I think about where I'm going to be going in the next six months. The plan is to hit as many countries in Europe as we can in 6 weeks, and then repeat this exercise in Asia for another 8 - until that time, the beginning of September, I'm going to be visiting the family I haven't seen for 12 years, in England. Canberra Airport is nothing special - in fact as far as ... read more

Nike: Now Canberra really does get a lot of bad press, and lets be honest how many people really knew the capital of Australia was Canberra, and not in fact Sydney (I did, due to the help of Mrs Wills in Year 5!). But to be honest we had a good time in Canberra, maybe because we only spent 2 days there, or maybe it was because we were staying with an EXTREMLY hospitable host (thank you kate!). no matter what the reason, Canberra will always hold a special place in mine and nats heart(especially Nats!) because....... ........WE SAW OUR FIRST WILD KANGEROO!!!!!!!....AND CHRIST HE WAS A BEAUT!!!!...... Other than our roo Canberra was also home to some of the best (and free) museums in Australia. The Anzac museum and the National Museum of Australia ... read more
