Visited the “temporary” Aboriginal Embassy just outside the Old Parliament Building, then went to the National Art Gallery, I think one of the best designed galleries I’ve ever been in. There was a photographic exhibition on, plus an interesting exhibition on Indian- Middle East weaving and sculpture. But the best part for me was the outdoor sculpture garden, particularly the fog maker and the haunting heads in the reeds. More Ethiopian food tonight. Though we initially weren’t sure we’d like the “planned” environment of Canberra, the place has really grown on us, ... read more

Just thought I'd give you's a quick update on what we got up to this last weekend as I hadn't been to Canberra since I got back to Oz so here ya go... I've been doing 60hr weeks most weeks to get this contract finished for the end of June so I decided to go away with Olivia for the weekend and Canberra sounded like a good idea coz it's not too far to drive and there's enough stuff there to keep us amused for the weekend. We also thought it would be a good test to see if the car would actually make it up the coast to Cairns when we go on our hols in August, good thing we did and all eh?! We got 20mins from my house before the engine overheated ... read more

Got to the National Museum just after it opened and stayed almost till it closed, a really great starting place to learn about Australia. Then we hoped around the corner to see the large waterspout and read about how the city was designed. This photo is of the main lake created less than 50 years ago as part of the plan, with the high court on the right and a wonderful sounding carillon on the left. We’re still freezing cold but the weather otherwise has been good to us. ... read more

We made it to Canberra by three in the afternoon, sooner than expected. (We are beginning to feel comfortable riding at 80 kph, and on the better roads even at 90 kph) and discovered there was a market just down the street from where we are staying that had an Ethiopian food stall in it. Couldn’t resist going though we were exhausted. Great injerras. ... read more

So it is my last day in Canberra. In a couple of hours I fly off to Melbourne to see what they are offering a little south. I'm told that they get 4 seasons in a day down there, so I really hope blizzard isn't part of my trip! haha.. Yesterday wasn't a very eventful day but we did go to the supermarket!! Doesn't sound very interesting.. I know.. but.. I did manage to find something that you would never find in OUR meat department!!! Kangaroo Steak and Kangaroo Mince meat!!.. Supposedly, it's very healthy for you. Reading the back of the package, it said that it was high in potasium and Iron and low in saturated fats! Not to mention that it's grown(?) without any chemicals and such in their diet. Interesting eh?? I think ... read more

Well since I have free internet access here, I figured that I should update this as much as possible. Especially since it's 8 in the morning and my gracious host is not awake yet. What can I say about Canberra??... hmmm.. Well you know, when I used to volunteer at the hostel and meet people from Australia, I used to tell them I was going to come here, and the usual response I got was.. why?.. And really I can now understand why they responded like that. hahaa To be honest, it is a really beautiful place. It's clean, the buildings are all well kept, the scenery is wonderful, and it's pretty to look at. Unfortunately, there really isn't a whole lot of things to see, unless you are a history buff. On the other hand, ... read more

Well yesterday was actually a pretty eventful day, more eventful than the other two have been anyhow. I got the Trashy Tour of Canberra courtesy of a friend named Laura, went to see the parliament house, walked on Anzac parade, and along the man made lake. To explain me having a friend named Laura, I will start this out by explaining that she is a girl I lived with and became friends with in York. A very lovely lady, we got on really well, and she is alot of fun to be around. Since she lives here, I knew a trip to Canberra would not be complete without a visit with her. So anyway, we went out to dinner with Laura and her sister Jen (who I also met in York), now that wasn't very ... read more

ALOHA! and G'DAY MATES (as the lady on Hawaiian air repeatedly said on the way here) I am here in sunny (but cold) Canberra. The first trip on my whirlwind tour of Australia. Let me tell you, it wasn't so easy getting over here, that's for sure. To start out, leaving Vancouver was quite easy. Apart from it being at 6:40 in the morning, and me stupidly thinking that I shouldn't sleep before I left, there was little that went wrong in that first leg of travel. Unfortunately, once I got to the US, the story was alot different. I am going to warm everyone, that it is unwise to travel on memorial day weekend (I didn't even know that's what it was) or close to memorial day weekend. All flights were overbooked, and had standby ... read more

G'day! Or should it be ni hao? Taking advantage of my strategic location near to Sydney's Chinatown, I found a travel agent offering very cheap day-trips. Why not go to Canberra? And their price for it was 4 times less expensive than similar offers with other travel agents. I even checked the price of a train or coach journey to Canberra by public transport and even that was more expensive! A real steal deal I found. The only thing was that it was intended for Chinese tourists and that the guide was only going to speak Chinese. But never mind! I must add that Canberra is about 4 hours away from Sydney, so the day was something like 8 hours driving to Canberra and back, and less than 3 hours actually visiting Canberra. When Australia became ... read more

Well, last night I had my 'farewell and help me clean out my grog cupboard' party. I think its safe to say a fun time was had by all and this morning I'm left with very little alcohol, so everyone played their parts well! I kinda figured with my friends I wouldn't have any problems getting rid of all the alcohol and surprise, I didn't! They also got together a lovely little gift bag of Aussie things I might miss (thanks Donna, who did the shopping for it and from whats in it, had a fun time doing it!). Contents included the following: twisties; macadamias (chocolate coated!); condoms (assorted!); bonds hipsters (cos you should always have clean knickers on!); band aids; eucalyptus drops; sewing kit; berocca; detergent; tissues; vegemite; caramello koalas; and of course, TIM ... read more
