Playa Del Carmen & Cozumel, Mexico. Another day long journey on Monday, we left Caye Caulker (queue weeping incoherently) on the 8:30am speed boat to to Belize City on the coastline, caught a nice aircon bus from there to the Mexican-Belize border town called Chetumal (4hrs), crossed the border to Playa Del Carmen on the Mexican coast (4 hrs), then a taxi to the hotel which made it around 8pm. The hotel was kinda funky, the entrance was built into a tree, the whole place was quite jungle-esque. Playa Del Carmen is....well....America really! It is a Mexican town on steroids due to the American cruise ships docking here, dumping off waddling, fat Americans weighed down with all their dollars. All the shops are super swanky: diamonds, designer and the lazy Americans just pay USD wherever ... read more

In my wildest imaginings I could never have guessed what this day would hold. Though I often admonished the boys to be careful I never actually believed that someone would end up at the hospital. But I'm getting ahead of myself. The day started pretty simply with a great breakfast at the "chow hall"...french toast, fruit, juice, and coffee so hot it burned Steve's mouth. Of course it didn't help that he was trying to drink it out of a tin cup! We had a pretty full day planned so we got on the road around 8:00 to head into Custer State Park (CSP) with Mt. Rushmore as our final destination. There is a much more direct route from the cabin to the monument but I really wanted to drive two of the scenic byways ... read more

It was pretty lame, all of the rides were small, wimpy, and over priced but we did get to ride on the world's only solar powered Ferris Wheel, that was kinda neat. We got some great views of Santa Monica anyway. In line for the ferris wheel we encountered a girl of seventeen years whom was according to the creepy ride operator not allowed to get on by herself, so she joined us. She too was on a road trip, traveling from Phoenix with her sister, we never met her sister, she seemed very lonely. After we left Santa Monica we went more into the heart of the City ... read more

I must say the Yucatan region has more ancient ruins than the UK has branches of Tescos. It’s been parched during the last 83 days that we have been in Mexico, suddenly it rained hard. When the rain cleared and the sun scorched its way through the clouds like a tongue through candy floss all the pesky microscopic bugs came out and smothered my sodden skin, causing inescapable irritable itchy, scratchy. I visited a real Mayan Shaman. He did not live within a hidden mountain/jungle retreat, but conveniently his healing office was right next door to our hotel called Copal Mayan spa, this man was the only currency worth every damn penny of his $90usd bill. Daniel Poole Peach looked very much like a solid, kind, Mayan Burt Reynolds. He asked me how I was. I ... read more

North America » Canada » Nova Scotia » Halifax June 3rd 2007

After I left Ontario I flew to Halifax. The Halifax area was overcast and so we could not see the ground until shortly before landing. It was very exciting when the plane finally broke through the clouds and Nova Scotia was right below. The first thing that struck me was just how many lakes there are near Halifax - the entire landscape was dotted with lakes and rivers. They had a late spring in the Maritimes so the trees were mostly still barren and I knew I was a long way away from warm, sunny Vancouver which had bloomed in to spring months before. I made my way in to the city of Halifax where I met up with Mike, Sean and Garreth, three friends from UBC. I spent a few nights with them and ... read more

North America » Canada » Quebec » Montréal June 3rd 2007

Just a short flight to Montreal where I met up with Sandra. I met her in NZ last year and she served as my tour guide along with her boyfriend Louis for the next 6 days or so. Montreal is lovely place and it certainly has a lot more character than any other Canadian city. The only problem is that they are Frenchies! Well I shouldn't knock them down to the Frenchies level as they don't have the same terrible behaviour as the French. And after all after a few beers they eat Poutine - cheese, gravy on chips and you can have anything else unhealthy on top. I had one and I was shitting bricks for days. I can't see the French eating one of these. I celebrated my birthday twice here too. Once ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Park City June 3rd 2007

Today's trip was after 5 hours of hard work this morning, in which I made pretty good progress on the presentation with the Powerpoint chart you saw in the last installment. So, walked out into the looooong corridor outside my room, got into the car, and started driving.... One of the things definitely to remember about the drive from SLC to Park City is the really big outlet center on the way. Then drove some more, got to Park City, and sat on a wonder ful deck at the base of the ski area to have lunch. Got ice cream, and then walked up and down Main Street, which is pretty much nothing more than a bunch of trendy restaurants and art galleries. Food for the physical and spiritual, I suppose. Lots of motorcycles parked ... read more

We had made lots of plans for memorial day weekend. We planned to go to Hawaii originally. But as usual Balaji had some important release at his work, so we had to drop the plan. We just did not plan anything untill May 2nd week. We realized that time is running by and we would not get good deals and started thinking about where to go. As Balaji could not afford taking leave (that is the very reason why we cancelled Hawaii:-(), we had to plan for some place nearby. Yosemite and Lake Tahoe were on my list of must visit places. It is always true that when we have something more beautiful and amazing so close to us we do not take effort to visit that place but we would have visited all other places ... read more
