after four delays and five gate changes we finally rolled into anchorage at about 9:30 pm local time. the alaskan mountain range is spectacular, even from the plane - they're just enormous and almost all snow-covered, full of ice fields and glaciers. We flew over 300 miles of mountains and then came barreling down through them to land in Anchorage. We've seen the rockies in canada and the states and they don't hold a candle to this. I can't even imagine how big Denali's going to be - it's 10000 ft higher than anything we saw on the way in.... Half the plane was filled with runners here for the marathon as well so it was a pretty rowdy de-planing, we're exhausted and it's still bloody daylight at 11:30 pm, which makes it 3am our time ... read more

Good morning from Bishop, CA, where it is HOT! Thankfully, we spent the night in the cool, sagebrush desert of the Buttermilks, after four days in the high alpine above the Whitney Portal... and we just sent the best route of the trip so far. The Whitney Portal is the trailhead for one of the most popular hikes of the area - the Whitney Trail. After camping a quiet night there - free of bears, marmots, squirrels, and even mosquitos - we began the three hour approach to our wilderness campsite at Upper Boyscout Lake. With 50-60 pounds on our backs, we gained about 3,000 feet of elevation - yikes! After dropping our packs off and establishing camp, we humped our gear up to Iceberg Lake - another 1,300 feet of vertical gain - to ... read more

The family ate in silence. They always ate in silence. This was not because of any family rule, or pious ritual. The family ate in silence because they had nothing to say to each other. The husband had grown tired of his efforts at daily small talk, and knew that no one at the table gave a shit that the toilets had flooded at work, and that once again, he was given the responsibility to clean it up. After dinner he would return to his own devices; organizing his collection of antique toy cars, polishing his 79 Cordoba, and after the family went to bed he would begin his nightly ritual: escaping to the basement to iron his clothes for work while watching his worn VHS copy of Red Shoe Diaries. But for now he ... read more

Howdy y'all! Well It's Friday and its my fifth FULL day of being at Camp Wa-klo! The DVD didn't quite do it justice... It's a million times better. No 'cell' reception unless I sit on a hill behind 'Roy Kit' the food hall and texts are 50p so I'm watching my pennies. Anyhoo, flight was great, mini tvs so got a bit of Leo and a bit of Reynolds, thank GOD for my DS! would have gone insane without it. Went from the airport to customs, faffing about with visa papers, bus to the Ramada in Newark, drove past the Manhattan skyline :D :D Stayed there and then bus to Port Authority, through the Linoln tunnel where we crossed the State line, through Hells kitchen, I was prepared for this from Ken's Godfather Ps2 game... spitting ... read more

North America » United States » New Jersey » Newark June 22nd 2007

I arrived in the United States yesterday, and met up with my cousins from New Jersey. I arrived in JFK airport, then took a shuttle bus to Newark airport, which is 5 minutes from the Sisk residence. The bus ride was my first time in New York City (I had seen it from Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty when I stayed with the Sisks and Faellas (my cousins) for the summer of 1997). It's great to see the New Yorkers live up to the cultural impressions of them, ie that their larger than life attitude and language match those shown in the movies. (though I think if I ask my Jersey friends for their opinions of New Yorkers they'll give me a different response...) Unfortunatley the reverse cultural exchange may not be the same. ... read more

This week everyone in the office went to a conference, leaving Seth and I with not much to do but beat on each other and check our email. So, after debating for the last 2 months, I decided Brazil is where I want to spend all my money. Capoeira is too addictive to pass it up for Puerto Rico or some other beach. I havent told my parents yet, but i am going to call them tonight. They will probably be ok with it, I guess, but since they were non refundable tickets it is too late. I have the worst travel itinerary in the world -22 hours with 3 changes of planes each way. But it was.. affordable (barely). Now I have to get a visa, which involves sending my beloved passport to an ... read more

What a full day in London - and what a great day we had. We started with an early breakfast at our hotel, cleaned up and then walked to Buckingham Palace to get a good view of the changing of the guard. We joined several hundreds of our best friends who had already found the "perfect" spot, but one spot opened up for us - along the crowd control fence/gate at the first of three gates leading into the palace. Amidst a light intermittent drizzle, we people watched, listened to all kind of languages, talked to the police trying to keep the growing crowd either behind certain barriers or moving along, and waited for the parade. The marching band of the first wave of guards came playing some great music and then turned into the first ... read more

Day 28 - Friday 22 June 2007 - Oaxaca Today was another early morning and a slightly longer bus trip to Oaxaca (pronounced Wahaca). We arrived around lunch and went straight away to lunch and another walking tour of the city. I don´t think Oaxaca is quite as nice as Puebla, but it does have a similar feel to it, with again, lots of colonial buildings, churches and courtyards. I´m beginning to think that most of Mexico is made up of little towns just like the past two we´ve visited! Not much different was different from yesterday, although we did explore a few markets that had food in them and got to taste a few local foods, including cheese and chocolate and the mole, a sauce made from 13 different types of chilis, nuts and ... read more

When I was first planning this trip I had only planned to stay one day in Salt Lake City, primarily to see Temple Square, then I saw how big The Great Salt Lake is and decided that I should stay the extra day so that I could take it in also. The Great Salt Lake is an inland sea stretching 75 miles long by 28 miles wide, it is the remnants of the pre- historic lake which covered 20,000 square miles during the Ice Age. The lake has no outlet; water leaves only through evaporation. Water flows into the lake from four river drainages carrying 2.2 million tons of minerals into the lake each year. Because of this high concentration of minerals are left behind and salinity levels range between 4% and 28% compared to ... read more

Hotel was a great idea. Left the hotel around 11, tried to get pizza hut but they weren’t open yet - went to the Don Street Deli. Was good! (Woman hacked out lungs behind Chris). When we headed out of Winnipeg the weather wasn’t as nice as it had been so far - today was rain, on and off. Saw some awesome clouds when leaving the city and took copious amounts of photos. Later, we found out that these clouds might have been responsible for a tornado which hit Elie, southwest of Winnipeg. Also interesting to note is that the rain was quite literally sideways…Chris’ window was soaked and mine was bone dry. We also saw ten million bales of hay outside the city. Southern Manitoba is flat. We took a circuitous route around the north ... read more
