Well, what started out as a real down kind of a day, picked up and really finished with some excitement. We awoke to realize that the bug that had been nagging at Sue had developed into pneumonia. We knew antibiotics were the only answer so we called Kaiser and they were no help at all. So cousin Judy came to the rescue from Michigan by calling her doctor and refilling her own perscriptions and we were able to pick them up within the hour and get started with the treatment. All this took most of the morning so we needed somthing close to home to do while Sue was convelescing. Today was a lot more low key but unforgettable nontheless. We slept in in an attempt to shake off the jet lag and acclimate to the time zone while deciding what's next. That took most of the morning and early afternoon, but when we finally did get going everything was just beautiful. Just walking the 5 blocks from West End to Central Park West we past at least a half dozen community gardens, parks, a riding stable, and a grand old school. Once inside the park we walked around the reservoir, dodging joggers and marvelling at the serenity that can exist in the heart of such a crowded and busy city. We flew to Newark Airport from Salt Lake City via Houston. There was a cool space shop in the airport and we were so tempted to buy stuff but felt it would be a little fake as we were not actually visiting the space centre or even Houston, we were only here to swap planes so resisted buying space paraphernalia and space food for our kids (or was my husband really buying it for himself... hmmmm interesting :) On domestic flights in the United States there is hardly any food served, so with two planes to catch we spent most of the day starving. This week I mailed all my information/application stuff to the Japanese Consulate in New York so they can send me back my visa. It was pretty scary placing what is essentially my entire life at the moment (passport, certificate of eligibility) into an envelope and giving it to complete strangers. Correction, complete strangers who work for the Postal Service. *shudder* Just kidding! Still, I did insure the package and get tracking/delivery confirmation, so it should be fine. I hope. I just realized that three years ago at this time I was just arriving home from Ireland. I guess I'm feeling a little "homesick," because I really wish I was there right now. I am spending the week in an area north of Albuquerque, New Mexico. One of my favorite foods in this area is the green chile cheeseburger. People in this area make your basic cheeseburger and then smother the cheese with green chiles. I am not an expert on various chile peppers, but I love these green chiles. One of the hallmarks of New Mexico food is green chiles. I asked one of the locals here where I could find a good green chile cheeseburger (everyone here sells them - even McDonalds and Burger King). He pointed me to the Owl Cafe. This is a local chain that began in San Antonio, New Mexico (I don't know where that is). They just opened on here in Coralles.
