Well this is it. My last day in NC for over two weeks! I can't wait to begin my travelling...starting with a lot of plane time and whatnot, but I don't mind, and it could be worse. I am going to Otavalo, Ecuador with Village Education project where a group is going to teach students in the segway from grammar to high school. The goal is to be able to send students to high schools in Ecuador and eventually build one there! This is its first year, i believe, so I'm a little nervous but very excited! Also, I'm going with two of my good friends, which will make it all the better. Really I have no idea what to expect, or what to pack, which is why my suitcase is enormous. I'm sure that is ... read more

We picked up Alan’s Dad (JC) in Salt Lake City on 06/11 and headed for Jackson Hole, WY. We spent only a few days there and would like to return someday. The beauty of Grand Tetons National Park is quite dramatic! We saw elk, buffalo, and a few young female moose, just grazing on roadside vegetation. Alan was the first to spot a bear waiting to cross the road! Jackson is somewhat of a tourist town, but very quaint and cute. We left there reluctantly and headed to West Yellowstone, Montana. We entered Yellowstone National Park from the south gate, only to stop midway through the park as it began to rain, then sleet, then snow, and finally hailed. The temperature in Jackson was about 67; when we stopped to let the storm blow by, it ... read more

Alaska, atlasta...shades of Ushuia, 20+ hours of daylight, my time orientation out of whack, time to eat? cornflakes and milk or steak and red??…looks like 2pm, actually 10pm, sunset is 12.30am, sunrise 3am!…helps to make me realise how much I wouldn’t like to be here at the opposite time of year! And it’s my anniversary, yes, 25 June 2005 I flew into LA, sometimes it seems like 12 weeks, other times, forever! The bike’s just clicked over 72.000 kms! In Vancouver I met Nigel, a ski club program director, on his 1200 Adventure (the few problems I have with the 1150 look to be sorted on the 1200….fantastic!) he invited me to stay in Whistler, it was on my way north so I did. Booked for the winter Olympics 2010, Whistler is picture pretty, big ragged ... read more

Yesterday, being the 4th of July, there is a small town on the island of Oahu that annually holds an Independepence Day Parade. I marched in it once about 15 years ago, but haven't been back to see it since. The smallish town of Kailua, is known mostly for it's 2 beautiful beaches, Lanikai and Kailua. It's a bedroom community, with very little frills in the way of nightlife, places of interestes, architecture, etc. so it's been about 5 years since I've been there. There are some good restraunts there, I've heard, but nothing I would travel 45 minutes to experience. Lately, I've been hearing Tourists are renting cabins or staying at bed and breakfastes there, but I would think with the lack of amenities, that I mentioned earlier, they would be heavily dissappointed. However, many ... read more

Wow. I can't believe I'm leaving for Europe in 2 days. This is merely the first gigantic domino to topple over to really give my summer a swift kick in the pants. 2 weeks in Europe and then back to the States for 5 days, then I'm off to Santiago for my wedding which is actually happening after 8 months of coordinating, planning and waiting. All thanks go to my lovely bride-to-be, Joyce, for really putting everything together with very few arguements, fights and kicking and screaming, who else gets to plan a wedding without crazy mother-in-laws, wacko fainces (that's me) and other familial madness that usually acompanies planning something like that? Ok, back to the adventure. So here's the itinerary for the next 2 and a half months, it's pretty ridiculous. So I leave Boston ... read more

Well Ladies and Gentleman, the time has come. I have been speaking of this for years and finally decided, its time. After six years I finally left Davis, so long overdue. It was a good run and an end to an era to say the least. Next chapter please. So to Asia it is. Asia why you ask? Well, I've lived in Europe, South America, and Africa is hopeless. This is probably one of the most different regions left to explore, and I have a bad yellow fever disease. For the next year it will be all of S.E Asia...Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. To my family and friends, it was great spending the last remaining days with you in the States. Take care to all and I'll talk to you soon. ... read more

Odometer at start: 32496km This day started with a latte and great scone at Coffee Break in Marquette. The owner is an old guy, which means he is my age, and a keen cyclist. He had lots of photos in his window of local races, so I had to ask him what goes on here for cyclists. He said the highlight of the year is a criterium they have every fall. They do the regular catagorized races for the aces, but they also have several open events. he was pretty proud that the open event this year had people from 7 years old to 72. I thought that was a great idea. I left without getting his name. I really need to make a point of doing that if I'm going to do any travel writing ... read more
