I have been a member of the illustrious Adventure rider forum for a couple of years no, before I left I posted a thread asking for help with a nice route as to get the biggest bang for my bucks, I got a lot of info and this has served me well to find some good spots. I also got invited to one member, Jeff’s house and also for a little spin, we went out into the wide open, on roads that I probably could find but really would not dare to go out on on my own, you’d never know where they end up. I left Idaho falls after having paid through the nose and other orifices as well, but WTF. I got to Jeff’s house and got rid of my panniers, and thus lightened ... read more

The US Army and the Sioux/Cheyenne had their last big battle with the Indians trying to preserve their land and way of life. The solders were out numbered big time and Custered made his “Last Stand.” Most of the solders were buried right where they fell. Custer, and many of the officers were later transferred to the cemetery at West Point. There was also a memorial for the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians that was very well done. I had the pleasure of being here on the Friday of Memorial Day. There is the Custer National Cemeter where they have soldiers and Indian Scouts from the 1800’s to today. They even had a Medal of Honor recipient buried here. Being Memorial Day Weekend, they had flags on every gravestone. Very moving to be there and see this. ... read more

As I was approaching Devils Tower, I was amazed how it is just there. Sticking up 50 million years ago, molten magma was forced into the sedimentary rock near the ground surface. As it cooled, it contracted and fractured into columns. Overly millions of years, erosion of the sedimentary rock exposed Devils Tower. It is 867 feet tall from the base. There is a great 1.3 mile walk around Devils Tower. It was very cool to see all sides of the Devils Tower. Even saw a snake right next to the paved trail in the rocks. Yes, there were several people climbing the Tower. I was told by a Ranger that it takes about 4-6 hours to climb the Tower but only 1 hour to come down, unless you make an error of course.... read more

The day started off dark and stormy, and stayed that way til after lunch. The snow began about 7 am and stayed with us til early afternoon. After dropping Luke off at the airport, we headed North toward Yellowstone. As we drove up along the Lewis River it started to snow quite hard. At the West Thumb park of Yellowstone Lake, the steam from the hot pools mixed nicely with the falling snow. Nothing had any boundaries. We wandered almost alone in a white, quiet bubbling world. The Canyon of the Yellowstone river disappeared into the fog as we sat listening to the roar of the waterfall. As we drove North we stumbled across odd wildlife -- a scared elk, wet bison, mule deer impervious to the presence of humans and a group of mountain goats. ... read more

Much of this story is best told with pictures and not with words. So, look all of the way down at the bottom to see the photos that don’t embed in the text. We pick up our adventure in Puerto Vallarta, from where we caught two flights to arrive in Boise late at night. Nathan got an up-close look at the cockpit and sat next to the pilot before take-off. I’m sure that he was impressed with the plane, but he still says he is going to be a train driver. I asked him if he ever thought of doing a job where he doesn’t drive anything, and his response was, “You mean, work in a supermarket?”. From Boise we drove east and our journey paralleled the Snake river across mainly flat land with just a ... read more

I imagine travel, for most people, is a well-planned endeavor. After all it’s important to get the most out of your vacation time. Weeks are spent searching websites trying to find the perfect hotel, flight and attractions. After deciding our destination to Greece, we did seek advice from a travel expert and scrutinized travel brochures. Life would have been simpler by booking a prearranged trip that meets most of your travel dreams. However, we wanted to put in our own personal flavor and learn about the country as we planned and developed details of the perfect trip. We read several books, watched videos, and read other travelers blogs. We now feel our trip will meet our expectations and are becoming anxious for our departure. The next step in our trip preparations is the packing process. We ... read more

Today was yet another day of driving across Wyoming, but we've just about got the job done. We discovered during the night that our campground in Greybull was surprisingly close to a rail yard- a rail yard where they worked all night slamming rail cars together. It was a tough night for sleeping. Leaving Greybull, you soon have to climb up and over the Bighorn Mountains, to an altitude of over 9000 feet. To reduce strain on the motorhome we left the car unattached until we got down the other side of the mountains. From there on we were back to prairie driving through slightly hilly terrain. We saw pronghorns several times. We stopped for the night in Sundance, Wyoming, on the edge of the Black Hills and just 19 miles from the South Dakota border. ... read more

It was 32 degrees in West Yellowstone this morning but 91 when we stopped for the day here in Greybull, Wyoming. Altitude is everything out west. We drove across Yellowstone one last time this morning on our way east. Despite the aggravation of too many people and a lot of driving, Yellowstone is still a remarkable place. Leaving Yellowstone you have to descend steeply from a mountain pass. The drive from the exit to the next real town of Cody, Wyoming, is about fifty miles, mostly through the Shoshone National Forest, and its a pretty drive the whole way, a mix of forest and mountains and grassy valleys. From about Cody on it was pretty flat and wide open sagebrush and grassy prairie. Greybull is kind of a straight forward small town, nothing special about it, ... read more

Monday, 4 September, 2017 We left Grand Tetons this morning in the heaviest haze yet. We were surprised at how thick the smoke was, we couldn't even see the tops of the mountains. We headed east from Moran through beautiful country, but the smoke was so thick it was like looking through a curtain. So, not many pictures. We crossed the Continental Divide at 9600+ feet, hoping it would be less smoky on the eastern side. Nope, still smoky. We drove through Dubois to Longhorn Campground, where we are to meet Tom, Kerry's oldest friend. We arrived early in the afternoon and took advantage of electrical hookups by charging our electronics. We also made a quick trip to the grocery. Back at the camper, I put some potatoes in the crockpot for supper and posted the ... read more

Friday, 1 September - Sunday, 3 September, 2017 As we drove south from Yellowstone to Grand Teton NP, there was more road construction south of West Thumb. We were lucky again and didn't have any long waits to get through very long sections of 1 lane road. We were much relieved to get a campsite at Grand Teton and were surprised to find we also had a cell phone signal. We were able to use the internet at the Laundromat to catch up on blogs and emails. The weather is lovely, but the smoke in the air again mars the beauty somewhat. The park was very crowded, but that is to be expected on the last holiday weekend of the summer. We love the mountains and the lakes and the contrasts between them. We went up ... read more
