Today was another 60 miles to Lander. The closer I got, the more interesting the view. I tried to take a few pictures of the majestic view of the Tetons in the distance, but the pictures don’t do it justice. As I neared Lander there were a lot of red sandstone hills to view and they are always stunning to look at. I arrived in Lander and checked into the Roadway Inn, recommended by my cousin Janet who I will see tomorrow in Dubois. I just have to get through the 75 mile uphill day tomorrow. Lander seems like a great little town, but I will be on the road at dawn to beat the wind and heat so no exploring today. Until tomorrow. ... read more

Mother Nature was good to me today. This is the second time since I left Yorktown that I have had a tailwind. It was really helping me all day and the ride was effortless! Although I rode 65 miles, it took me about 41/2 hours. Saddle time is what is important and that’s pretty good! The timing is perfect because I have two more long days ahead and knocking this one off so easily has really saved my legs and butt! I enjoyed the wonderful vistas today and even got to see some Pronghorn Antelope! That was fun. They were actually pretty close to the road as I approached, but as soon as I stopped to get a picture they took off. Part of the joy was watching their grace as they effortlessly put distance between ... read more

Today was a chance to explore Saratoga, Wyoming. Saratoga has been special since the Native American’s discovered the healing Hot Springs here. The city grew up around the Hot Springs and was initially named Warm Springs. During a smallpox outbreak in 1887, infected individuals went to the Hot Springs and frequently, ( at least in legend) were cured. It became famous after that and a leading citizen, Fenimore Chatterton recommended they rename the city Saratoga after Saratoga Springs in New York. Tourists have been coming here ever since. A local told me there are several High End Dude Ranches in the surrounding area and a resort across the North Platt River known as the Saratoga Hot Springs Resort. I wondered over to the free Hot Springs,( known as the Hobo Pools), and discovered there are three ... read more

Today was a rather unremarkable day. I rode 45 miles including a 3 mile detour to the the historic Fort Steele. Fort Steele was built on the North Platte River in 1868 to protect the large Sheep Ranches that were located in this part of Wyoming. The Fort was under frequent attack by the Ute Indians. The location below the bluffs was strategically impossible to defend and it was dicommisioned via a treaty in 1886. Fort Steele then became a sheep shearing settlement where 800,000 lbs of wool was shipped East via the Union Pacific Railroad every year. The railroad still operates today. There is very little left of the Fort except a few signs. It certainly was not worth the detour. Today was also the first time since I left Virginia that the published route ... read more

After a better nights sleep, I enjoyed a good breakfast at the River Rock Cafe in Walden, Colorado and jumped on the bike for Saratoga, Wyoming. It is always exciting to anticipate entering another State. This will be my seventh state since leaving Yorktown, Va. To Review: Virginia, Kentucky,Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado. As I left Walden, I was back on the chip seal road. My hope was that when I entered Wyoming the roads would improve. Unfortunately that was a pipe dream. Only the name of the State is different. My ride today was through huge ranches with lots of grazing cattle and an occasional home and barn. There are few trees along the Wyoming 230 Highway. After crossing the border at the 21 mile point, I continued a lonely 25 more miles to Riverside,(population ... read more

Day 1: Fly to Salt Lake City and 3 hrs drive to Idaho It was 96 degrees Fahrenheit when we landed at Salt Lake City at 4 pm. It was the beginning of our most coveted Yellowstone and Grand Teton trip. The turbulent flight was attributed to very hot weather. In fact, the pilot joked that he was glad the flight had brakes that worked! After a grocery stop for water and snacks, we drove 3 hours to Blackfoot in Idaho. The drive was through a barren but picturesque landscape with one big city Pocatello. The mantra that night was 'early to bed and early to rise'. Weather forecast for next 2 days was bad with 60 percent rain and thunderstorms and we just kept our fingers crossed! Day 2: Yellowstone (Old Faithful, Upper Geyser Basin, ... read more
