Well the night before last was our last night in the States in Seattle. Haven't had internet access since so have neem unable to update it. Seattle was cold - bit of a change from the other places we've seen. It was ok, we went up the Space Needle which is about the most popular thing to do there and apart from that there wasn't really much else to. But it was nice enough though 1 night was long enough there. Thought i'd take this opportunity to share with you what the rest of the team has been taking the mick out of me about. Firstly, on the first day as travelling through Montana "It'd be quite flat if it wasn't for the mountains" Then on leaving Seattle "Is the snow cold snow?" And on the ... read more

Boating the outer coast... kayaking the rock gardens of Cape Spencer... hiking ice field glaciers... no, every year my most dangerous moments are right after they hand me the keys and say, 'Take a right then another...' and 20 minutes later I'm on I-5, downtown Seattle, rush hour traffic, 60 miles an hour, its dark, raining and me at the wheel. This year at least it wasn't raining. Life in the Alaskan bush does not prep one for this stuff... but I survived it. Sure feels reassuring to have that walk-away insurance, so long as I survive the crash.... read more

Since Last week it has been snowing on and off in Seattle.. the drive from Whistler to Seattle there was snow on the ground the entire way.. This is not a normal phenomenon.. Everyone in Seattle is freakin out over the snow, after living in WI for a year I find this very amusing, since people there drive when there is a few inches of snow and ice on the road with no drama. the local news stations are going beserk with coverage. All the local resorts are reporting a solid base and conditions for the weekend should make for some of the best early season skiing I've witnessed. ... read more

For those of you reading about our upcoming Thailand and Vietnam trip who'd like to learn more about Clouded leopards, this is from the great Clouded Leopard Project website maintained by zoo keepers at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. The Clouded Leopard The clouded leopard is a medium-sized wild cat found in the forests of Asia. Little is known about the wild behavior of clouded leopards due to their extremely secretive nature. Much of our understanding of this cat’s natural history and behavior is a result of observations of them in captivity. Taxonomy While all species of cats are closely related and classified as one family, the Felidae, genetic research has shown the clouded leopard to be more closely related to the large cat species. For this reason, clouded leopards are considered a member of the ... read more

I'm working from home today due to last night's snowstorm. Schools are closed in Seattle and Tacoma, so I'm now just checking out the weather in Hanoi, Vietnam and Bangkok, Thailand. It looks like it'll be about 80-90 degrees in Thailand and 70-80 degrees in Vietnam!! Since we're camping in hammocks for a couple of days in Thailand, I'm getting my camping gear together. I have a sleeping bag with a compression sack, and a day ago I purchased a new headlamp-style flashlight. The coordinator in Thailand says that if we're camping at the substation out in the forest, we're in the area where a number of wild animals have been spotted - including tigers!! This is going to be a huge adventure!... read more

Rain, Rain, We'll Go Away! The past week here in Seattle has been very rainy and dark. The earlier part of this week our home saw over 5" of rain, and it is still coming down. Lisa comes home well after the sun has set and it is dark. We love living in Seattle and this is a part of living here, but every now and then you do need to get away from it. And get away, we shall. 7,551 miles to be accurate. We are feverishly gathering all our gear and taking care of last minute details for our trip next week to South America. This weekend we have been busy getting our packs packed and starting to put up our Christmas decorations for when we get back (we are hosting Christmas for our ... read more
