Welcome to my first Travel Blog! Tonight I received my Peace Corps staging kit in the mail ("staging" is the two-day orientation in the States prior to departure to the host country), and I am officially beginning my Peace Corps training on June 7, 2006! I am going to finish up my classes here, fly home to York, PA on June 2, and then drive to Philadelphia to begin staging! But let me back up a little bit... My name is Steve, and I am a Peace Corps Masters International (PCMI) graduate student at the UW Evans School of Public Affairs in Seattle. For the last 9 months, I've been taking classes in Economics, Statistics, Management, International Affairs, and Development, working towards a Master of Public Administration (MPA) and preparing myself for the Peace Corps. I ... read more

The odometer said it all. After 3488 miles our trip was finally at an end. It was with great reluctance that we handed the keys to our car for the last 3 ½ weeks and headed into SeaTac airport to check in. We would miss the comforts and ride of the car, especially when we arrived back home to our old but reliable Toyota. Once again there were only trolleys that you had to pay for the privilege of using, so we dragged our four cases behind us to the check in desk miles away from the car rental drop off. Before we could check in the lady made us weigh all the bags to see if they all were below 50 lbs each, otherwise we would incur a $25 fine per piece. Unfortunately one of ... read more

Our breakfast arrived, brought in on a linen covered table once again. We had ordered Vegetarian Benedict - two poached eggs with roasted vegetables and a jalapeno cheese sauce with breakfast potatoes nested on homemade brushetta. This was accompanied by tomato juice for Gail and grapefruit juice for me and a hot drink. It was very delicious but we were still full from dinner yesterday so couldn’t fully appreciate the breakfast. Once done we called the porter to collect our baggage and car. The car packed we headed off to the ferry port in the rain which was a couple of minutes away from the Empress. While waiting for the ferry we had to proceed through US immigration before boarding the ferry to Port Angeles, Washington. Seemed rather strange that it was done on Canadian Soil ... read more

I'm still at home but rearing to go. I've made some train reservations and have my 10 days for 2 months in 3 countries rail pass. I am getting through finals and AP tests right now which seem to be excessively hard to study for when all I want to do is plan and even better, being going to Europe. ... read more

Rental car = exlpore time. Viva International District! Also known as chinatown - but there are so many other asian cultures represented cant be Chinatown Wikipedia has a great description/history of the International District. http://wikitravel.org/en/Seattle/International_District Lots of history in seattle with a clash of all cultures here. Based on current events seemed like a good place to visit. Perfect place for me to go get lost. I like to travel by getting lost and seeing what I can find. Each block seems to be it's own culture from Asia. Vietmanese, China and Japan (by way of huge shopping center) are the most respresented. The Danny Woo Community park is where locals can do small gardens. Seems to be common in big cities and even madison has a couple. I got lost in the large new Japanese ... read more

Belltown. Plans were for Emmets Oyester, but as with everything in Pike market area they closed at 7. So went by Zoe Cafe in tribute of the greatest dog and I would of taken Zoe, but it was too highclass for just me. Ahh yes I might as well get lost and wander..I spot The WHiskey Bar. Collection of messengers, punk music spinning by Thrasher Hat DJ, tattoo women (and men), soccer on the tv, art on the wall and $1 PBR's. I felt right at home. Check it out. Off to Pike Brewing for some oyster shooters (i have had better) and then to Cat Power. CHan Marshall brought along a 16 piece band from Memphis. Chan commanded the audience, even with her awkwardness on stage. No wonder Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) has been known ... read more

The most common question I get asked after "funny accent where are you from?" is by far: "Soooo, you quit a great job and went traveling around the world, why?". Since I'm not exactly sure what the answer is to that question, I usually pause for a bit which generally means that the person asking the question tries to find an answer himself: "What are you running away from?", "Are you trying to find yourself?", "Are you writing a book?", "Have you recently divorced?" and so on. As a traveler you meet all kinds of fellow travelers. The funny thing is that although I have only been on the road for about six weeks, I have already met hundreds of people and in fact met all of those people mentioned above. I have met the recently ... read more

I have been impressed at how seattle has so many neighborhoods. My temporary home is the u-district. This week I have been through belltown, queen anne, fremont, ballard and capital hill. If it was not for the geography you would not know one neighborhood from another. They each have their own central area so its like many 'downtowns' in one area. So far fremont and capital hill are my 2 fav neighborhoods. LadyTron sold out Neumos - and Neumos was the perfect spot to see them. Presets Opened. 2 guys, drums 2 korgs and an ipod can crank out a lot. They reminded me that bangs with bowl haircuts are on the way back. Might have to have Jason back in Madison hook me up, Ladytron topped them with 5 Korgs and 2 Rolands on stage ... read more

This week is concert week for me. I was suppose to go to Coachella, but alas with my current work travel schedule and lack of time with the doglets in AZ - i will see most of the bands I want to see in Seattle. Tonight i met Bruce at Matt's in the Pike St market area. This little place has had rave reviews, small menu and reservations are a must. After the black cod special, we were off. Well ok a Bombay Saphire and Tonic pit stop and we were off to the Paramount. Paramount Seattle is an old theater, and I am not much for one of theater shows, but my latest lust is Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. We hit the bar, but alas they wont let us out with our ... read more

Its a late dinner tonight. Wandering past the Neptune where i have taken in a couple of good movies, i noticed that Celestine Prophecy movie was on this week, I thought to myself oh man i need to eat and go cath the 9:40 showing since I will be at 2 concerts this week. Its only playing for 1 week. Well I go to Ruby, a bar/eatery with ecclectic unmatched furniture to match the the food. I just had a cliantro pesto eggplan sandwich that rocked! I open the computer to do some work, and low and behold - there is free wi-fi. Ok whats the big deal? Well this seems to be sponsered by the University of Washington AND by the city for business's along University Ave. Drinking my beer, surfing.. and its 9:55 15 ... read more
