A 3488 Mile Driving Odyssey Comes to an End

The odometer said it all. After 3488 miles our trip was finally at an end. It was with great reluctance that we handed the keys to our car for the last 3 ½ weeks and headed into SeaTac airport to check in. We would miss the comforts and ride of the car, especially when we arrived back home to our old but reliable Toyota.

Once again there were only trolleys that you had to pay for the privilege of using, so we dragged our four cases behind us to the check in desk miles away from the car rental drop off. Before we could check in the lady made us weigh all the bags to see if they all were below 50 lbs each, otherwise we would incur a $25 fine per piece. Unfortunately one of them was 7lbs over, and instead of paying the fine we had to move aside and redistribute some of the items. We checked in via the automated electronic check in desk and decided to fork out £40 each to upgrade to economy plus for our trip home. Well worth it I think, especially considering our tickets were free in the first place due to

cashing in some of our air miles.

Having passed through security, we found a Mexican place to have brunch as we had some time to kill. Had a grilled vegetarian burrito which was delicious. It was so stuffed that the ladies sealing them had problems closing them up without making a mess of the whole thing. The persons before us had split and the contents came gushing out so she had to wrap the whole mess in another tortilla. Had it been mine, I would have preferred her to start afresh as it was completely off putting, and made it look like slop instead of a burrito!

After that we wandered through a few shops getting some last minute things like water and some chocolate covered cherries as the previous ones I had were so delicious. The checkout lady tried with great enthusiasm to get us to buy a DVD on Seattle, and set up the TV for us to watch it on, but neither of us felt inclined and so left the shop to find our gate. At the gate there was a Dryers ice cream shop, and considering we went 3 ½ weeks in the US

/Canada without even one lick of an ice cream we decided it was about time and had a small bowl while we waited for the plane to arrive.

Leaving Seattle we flew past Mt Rainer with it’s peak poking out of the clouds. It was a beautiful sight, made all the more special as we were sitting in our economy plus seats so could enjoy it comfortably instead of with our knees wrapped around our ears in normal cattle class! Apart from that spectacular sight, the rest of the flight was mundane. We arrived in Washington Dulles with no time to spare for our next leg, everyone was already boarded on the plane. It was great though walking on and finding we had four two empty seats between us and another chap, so we could spread out and perhaps grap some shut eye.

The dinner they served was not the best food we've had on airlines. There were two lumps of something undistinguishable in a bowl, and after tasting them, they still remained unknowns, so left that as it wasn't a great tasting experience anyway. The movie we chose to watch was The Matador, a strange film! Couldn't

exactly recommend it for viewing. After the movie we tried to sleep for the remainder of the flight, but not to much avail. Couldn't get comfortable, and then once comfortable couldn't sleep, so instead spent the flight tossing and turning like a cat every few minutes.

The captain announced our impending arrival at Heathrow, saying that the weather was overcast and cold. Not surprising! Luckily our bags were some of the first to fly off the conveyor belt, so we could head on through customs to our waiting taxi home. There was a bit of a kafuffle with out taxi, but we finally met and the lady driver chatted incessantly for the duration of the 1 ½ drive! I would prefer to sleep, but her yacking made us stay awake and enjoy the new spring growth on the trees instead.

It was a horrible site to arrive home and find a ‘SOLD’ sign on our house that we are renting. We found out the day prior to our departure that they owners wanted to sell, so now begins the chore of house hunting and moving! What a way to end the holiday!

Anyhow, until July, adios! In
