So Caras gone. I think we all sort of felt it coming. she just wasnt liking much about the trip or the smell of our feet. we stayed at a Rest area last nite with a bunch of truckers. we left richmond so late, it didnt make any sense to pay to stay somewhere. in the morning cara proclaimed that she had been petrified all nite, hadnt slept, and never wanted to stay at one again. a rest area. so, without coffee, we pushed on for williamsburg and VA beach. we stopped at colonial williamsburg, at caras suggestion, and walked around for a few hours. it was such a nice day out that i didnt really care that the place looked the same as the last time i was there. after that, we shook off for ... read more

Well today, were just trying to untangle all the possibilities in front of us. jeremiah putt a call into julia at the conserviters center in burlington, nc. its some kind of big cat rescue/ zoo/ wildlife refuge. from what i understand they require a lot of training, but due to our inherent radness, and their lack of staff, they may be willing to overlook our lack of experiance. How does one recieve experiance with lions? furthermore, what assistance will that training be when the lion snags your leg with his GI Joe kung-fu grip? Training tip #1 never approach lion without a bull whip and a chair. Tip #2 If one cannot find either, keep several animal crackers in your pocket, when the lion attacks toss cookies in his face to disorient him with there life-like ... read more

A whirlwind trip to the US included a roadtrip through the Outer Banks from Virginia Beach to North Carolina riding four ferries and staying in the picturesque town of Beaufort for the first night. Pronounced ''Bo-furt'' by locals, the historic town was established as a seaport with the right to collect customs in 1722. During the American Revolution, it was the third largest port in the state. In 1997, Beaufort was highlighted in national and international news as the wreckage of what is presumed to be Blackbeard's flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge, was discovered in 20 feet of water -2 miles from Beaufort Inlet. The next day onto Oriental where we found ourselves looking at real estate. With deep water in short supply in many parts of Virginia, North Carolina offers more possibilities for providing a home ... read more

9am: We were supposed to see a bit of the city before we leave in the afternoon. But Sanak woke up only at 10am. Hmm, not a good sign for the trip given that we plan to wake up early and do most of the driving during the day to avoid driving at night. Dhiraj called to warn us about the huge snowstorm headed our way. We are gonna be driving right into it. Definitely not the best start to the trip! 1pm: Alright, so finally made it out of the house and decided to show Sanak a bit of New York.. which basically meant making a few rounds of Times Square and keeping him happy with a couple of trips to the M&M and Hersheys store. 5pm: Bags - check. Soda - check. Chips - ... read more

This was the longest journey of the whole trip easily. We traveled from Denver all the way through Kansas (very dull) and Missouri (dullish) Kentucky (good) and West Virginia (lovely) until we got to Virginia Beach. We decided on this location as we wanted a beach location that was drivable to New York. Virginia beach is a classic tourist hot spot some places a bit tacky but the beach was great and surrounding areas really lovely. What was a surprise is that I did not know that this area is one of the biggest American Air Forces facilities in the world. When you are on the beach you have fighter jets flying over the top - they are very loud and sometime quite annoying so be warned. We stayed for two nights and had a couple ... read more

Day 25. Before Cannon woke up I went down to the lake and took some great shots of the canoes. See attached. We left Appomattox early in the morning and hit VA Beach at noon. We spent 4 hours on the beach enjoying the water and views. Then Pizza to go and a quick drive to our campgrounds at First Landing State Park. This is the area that the founders of Jamestown landed. The beach was great. Cannon was able to go crabbing (no luck) and we went to a campfire in the park. We ended the night with a walk on the beach looking for ghost crabs. Then to bed. We changed our plans and stayed at first landing until about 2pm the next day to enjoy more beach time. This caused us to miss ... read more

Thursday, 4 June We checked out of the Cherokee KOA around 8am and headed for Virginia Beach. Overall, the Cherokee KOA was well-equiped, clean, and the staff weren't unfriendly, but it was a bit desolate, the WiFi mixup was annoying and coffee isn't free anymore. I'd give it a 7 or 8 overall. The first part of our 8 hour trip was on a very steep, winding, narrow road, with downhill grades up to 9 percent with runaway truck ramps. Once we reached Maggie Valley, the auto speed limit was 55 but for trucks only 35! The rest of the trip was easier and uneventful. We pulled into the Virginia Beach KOA just after 6pm and were promptly met by the friendly host. The office and store closed at 5:30pm. He got our key and check-in ... read more
