Thought I would add a bit so I could post a couple of photos. The Spirit of Independence is docked near us...kind of looks like a giant, version of us. Well actually, she has bronze engraved winches and stuff, but the lines are similar. Lovely chap who crews on the vessel gave us all sorts of useful information regarding the area. We will be here for another day or two..taking advantage of some free spots to tie up and or anchor. It would be nice to get a little sight seeing in. Our cruising permit says we need to call in when we change ports...we interpreted that as calling in when we change states, at least while on inland waterways. In any case we dutifully called in, answered the questions and asked the fellow, what exactly ... read more

Well, we’re docked! And I can’t believe the end is already here. We woke up briiiight and early this morning (about 6am) to Claudia, Dean Sean’s mom, singing “Good Morning” over the PA system. It was a great final touch to our last wake-up call (although unusually early). My friends and I had our last breakfast outside as we watched the sunrise and pulled into the channel leading into Norfolk. Seeing land for the first time in 9 days was warming, especially it being our home country, which we haven’t seen in 10 weeks. We all went up to the front of the ship on the top deck to see the Explorer pulling in. During this hour long process, an entire school of dolphin came out to greet us! Gosh, what a treat! They were everywhere. ... read more

Ok so now it’s time to update as I have been very slack and lazy with this so I figured it’s about time I pulled my finger out. Now late last month ‘we’ (Jeremy and I) had the chance to head up to Norfolk Virginia because being the superstar that he is, Jeremy received his CSM from the Australian Ambassador on HMAS BALLARAT which was partaking in Northern Trident 09. We decided that we would make a road trip out of it and headed up through Georgia and South Carolina where the accents became a little more 'rednecky' (I know that's not a real word either) and the signs on the side of the road told you "We have pecans, hams and remember Jesus loves you". Armed with our newly acquired religious acumen, negative hams ... read more

Thirteen Days. Thirteen days and I'll be taking the trip I've literally been born to take. On the other hand, Monte has been hesitant about this trip since the day I first mentioned the idea. How did so much pressure come from one little trip? I think it all started with a plate of arepas con queso... Visiting my dad in Richmond one time shortly after Monte and I started dating, Monte had his first arepa. I watched almost too closely as he took his first bite of the grilled corn cake with cheese that my stepmom had just prepared for breakfast. He nodded in approval as he chewed and as silly as it sounds, I probably knew at that moment that one day, I would take that boy to Colombia. My excitement for a ... read more

Obfuscator writes: I'll keep this pretty short, since there's not a lot to say that will interest everyone. After we left Mount Yonah on Day 88, we drove until about Greenville, SC, where we found a decent motel and crashed for the night. The following day, we drove from there to Norfolk, VA, where we were due to meet our brother J and his family for Thanksgiving. The drive would have been a lot better if we hadn't hit fairly awful traffic around Charlotte, NC. Being the day before Thanksgiving, we probably should have anticipated bad traffic, but we didn't think about that. Near the SC/NC border, we stopped for a while at King's Mountain Military National Park. Onaxthiel had passed this spot many times in his southern dwelling years, but had never had the chance ... read more

Nov 9. Salomon I, MD to Portsmouth, VA We left Salomon Island, MD at 0715. Around 1130 we passed from Maryland to Virginia. At 1800 we passed by the Navy Pier at Norfolk, VA. It was impressive to see the ships at night time. At 1939 we anchored by Tidewater Marina in Porthsmouth, VA. We logged 98 nm today. ... read more
