Phillip cooked us breakfast this morning and introduced us to his daughter, Layla. He has travelled the world and adopted her during a two year stay in Azerbaijan. His life story was fascinating and we enjoyed talking with him throughout our scrumptious eggs and potatoes. Big shout out to him and his route suggestion which took us on the most beautiful scenic drive up through Massachusetts and Vermont. There are plenty of places to buy maple products throughout New England, but we wanted to wait and buy it from a Vermont farm. Just a ways into Vermont we saw a sign for a small maple farm down a little turn off. We pulled up to several large fields of cows and a small farmhouse with a sign on the barn saying something along the lines of, ... read more

We travelled north to Burlington through the White Mountains on Friday 13th. As we climbed up to the mountains we encountered drizzle and rain but we stopped for a rest in Bethel a small town of 2000 people and had a snack in a sandwich shop. Quaint little business and we wondered how the owner makes a living out of it, as the passing traffic disappears and the weather closes in. Lovely fresh BLT with local coffee blend. Passed Middlesex and Grantham on the way. Making the hotel was quite straight forward after we had a poor start in Concord NH mainly as I did not listen to what I was being told by my map reader. The evening meal saw St Louis Ribs mixed with Montreal coleslaw?? Yes it was different perhaps sauerkraut in it? ... read more

My string of bad luck finding the trail continued, with a twist. This time I couldn't (and never did) find the trailhead, but I was able to use a different nearby trailhead to get where I wanted to go. My first hike was to Rattlesnake Cliff. Rather than looking into the mountains, this vista actually looks west over a lake and the flat land beyond (and, eventually, the Adirondacks). Apparently there is also a larger south facing cliff, but I never saw the trail fork to reach it. On the way down I also took a bunch of pi... read more

10 August, 2013 We were out before nine this morning, early for us, but we were eager to get to the Mt. Washington Auto Road. There were bicyclists everywhere as there were two separate bicycle races underway. We could see there were clouds at the top of the mountain, but that is the case 60% of the time. We opted to take the guided tour, one with a professional driver who knows the road and gives interesting bits of information on the way up and down. I knew Kerry would not want to drive this road, which is steep, narrow and winding. And the winds are ferocious. We bought tickets and only had about a 10 minute wait before our guide, Erik, called us to load up. We ride in a van with a special transmission, ... read more

Today we veered off track due to two different recommendations from travellers in the breakfast room. Boldt Castle in the Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River was our destination. We headed northwest to a small town called Alexandria Bay, NY. This is where you catch the ferry out to the castle. We were on the first ferry out to the castle and were we glad we got there first! It was magnificent!!! The sun came out and we toured the castle before the rush of people started coming in. Each ferry that pulled up to the dock was fuller and fuller. People compare this castle to the Hearst Castle in San Simeon California. I have seen both now and we all agreed that the Hearst Castle is far grandeur. We all walked the grounds and ... read more

Geo: 44.4758, -73.2132We casually woke up this morning and had breakfast at the hotel. Even though our tire was fixed, we decided it would be a good idea to get a new spare tire considering we have 13 more days through the mountains, through rural little town America, across bridges, along coastlines and through big cities so we ended the tireless discussion and had the spare fixed. It took only 45 minutes, on a Sunday mind you, and off we headed to Burlington Vermont.Along the way, we detoured to a Western Town suggested by Roadtrippers.com a mile off of our route which was closed for the season. I am not sure what season it's open. One of us is missing something. So we stopped at a goofy little mini-golf and had ourselves a round and a ... read more

Geo: 44.4758, -73.2132This morning we visited the ski jump and bobsled facilities at Lake Placid. It definitely gives you an appreciation for the guts that those athletes have when you are out on the jumps and tracks. From there, we headed to Burlington, Vermont. We crossed Lake Champlain on the ferry from Essex, NY to Charlotte, VT, and drove into Burlington. We stayed at a campground that is on Lake Champlain, and 2 miles from Burlington via bike path.We took the bike path to town this evening and got caught in a brief rainstorm. Had a great time meeting the locals at the marina bar, and dinner off of Church St. in the row of restaurants in downtown Burlington.... read more

"She's as sweet as tupelo honey She's an angel of the first degree" After a quick trip to the nearby supermarket for some travel necessities (ice, fruit, crackers, cheese, Goldfish, Perrier, and Fig Newtons) we cranked up Van Morrison and headed north to Burlington VT. (Musical collections later in the day included Coldplay, R.E.M., Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts, The Drifters, and Luciano Pavarotti - we try to be eclectic.) This was intended to be just a transit day, but we are always opportunistic, and found two things to see along the way. The drive was basically interstate driving through the Green Mountains, but these states have the good sense not to mow down everything within sight of the highway, and we were bordered by green grasses and shrubs and dense woods, mixed hardwood and ... read more

It's that time of year again. The snow in Vermont has been the best in over 20 years. Jay Peak and Stowe have a 50+ inch base, and even Mount Snow has 36". Time to get your boards and skiis out and head up the hill. We hit the Carinthia Park at Mount Snow last week and it was one of the best days we've had out in a long, long time. We stayed at an awesome ski house that we found on Otalo, they're like KAYAK but for vacation rentals. The hot tubbing was serious!... read more
