Driving West of Tropic, Utah Hwy 12 goes uphill on to the Paunsaugunt Plateau crossing Bryce Canyon National Park. (The East side of the P. Plateau is Bryce Canyon NP where the natural erosion exposes the colorful soft rock.) I turned South in the Dixie National Forest on Forest Service road 087. There are so many free legal camps there for individuals and groups. I drove by Tropic Reservoir and Tropic Springs. I turned West on Forest Service road 105 going up the Kanab Creek canyon. I picked out a large group site for my camp that would hold about twenty trucks, and lots of people. I fixed some dinner and did the all important "goof off" while enjoying the sunset. I saw no traffic there on FS 105. The next morning I had my normal ... read more

Well, I was burning daylight on the Paunsaught Plateau and my next camp will be in Arizona. I drove back to Utah 12 and drove Westbound. It didn't take me long to get to Red Canyon featuring the two arches that Utah 12 passed through. Then I had a short drive to Red Canyon Village where I would go Southbound on US Hwy 89. (Red Canyon Village is not on the Utah State map.) I did purchase some coffee while I was there. In Orderville they had several rock shops for us tourists. I made my stop at the Orderville Rock Shop; the best rock shop in town. Then I passed through some small towns on my way to Kanab, Utah where the only good grocery store was before I reached the back-country of Arizona. I ... read more

About three miles West of Utah 63 (Bryce Canyon NP) on Utah 12; I turned Southbound on FS 087 (the primary road across the Paunsaugunt Plateau) of the Dixie N Forest.I drove to the second crossing of FS 088 to make my camp for the night. I cooked my dinner and watched a nice sunset. Then I watched the moon rise. I got on my bed and had a nice sleep for the night. The next morning I had a nice coffee break. Then it was time to drive across the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Back on FS 087 Southbound I quickly got to the nice Tropic Reservoir. There was time to enjoy the views of the lake and shoot a few pics. On the South side of the reservoir there was the Tropic Spring open free to ... read more

After crossing the Northern section of Bryce Canyon N Park on Utah 12; I turned South on Utah Hwy 63 to the main part of this wonderful park. First I made a stop in Bryce Canyon City for petro and to drop off my postcards in their mail drop. Bryce Canyon is not a true canyon, but is an Amphitheater. This is the Eastern end of the Paunsaugunt Plateau (with all East views) with very nice erosion structures often called "Hoodoos". I had a long day and I passed up on Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, and Bryce Point cuz of the big traffic there with long walks. I started with the very nice Inspiration Point. At Inspiration Point I took my quart of cold water and enjoyed several views of this nice overlook. I was dry ... read more

Yesterday at Capital Reef we had no cell service and no internet, so I completed the blog entry when we went to the nearest town for ice cream. Even there the best I could get was a 3G signal that would come and go, so today I added more pictures to yesterday's blog entry. Today we traveled 140 miles or so to Bryce Canyon National Park on Utah Highway 12. It was a spectacular drive, white knuckles at times to be sure. We wound our way up and over a few mountain ranges on a narrow twisting road with steep drop offs. One section was along a ridge with a thousand foot drop on both sides. There was no guard rail. We stopped for lunch at Anasazi State Park, where there were ruins from early Pueblo ... read more

Day 2 started in the middle of the night, around 3am local time. It turns out that adjusting to the 7 hour time difference isn't easy! We were all proud of ourselves for getting through a night in Vegas! We met for a continental breakfast at 7am and were ready in the coach to leave early! We didn't have to chase any student! I'm pretty sure that is a first on one of my trips! The hotel in Vegas was a travelodge and was a typical USA hotel with hotel rooms that lead straight outside. We set off for Zion National Park at 7.45am and we settled in for afairly long coach journey. The scenery was incredible as we left Vegas. It went from city to desert in an instant with almost no transition! A very ... read more

Next up was Zion. Wow! the rock formations were awesome!!! We only had one day in the park so we decided to do a little bit of bouldering in a small slot canyon. The hike up was difficult but the slot was a lot of fun. Of course i slipped off the rock at one point and didn't land on the bouldering pad the we brought. Instead i landed square on the left butt cheek was left with a minor limp the next two days......fun!!! Bryce Canyon was next and a sweet surprise was in store for us.........lots of snow....it was awesome!!!!!... read more

Hello from Bryce Canyon. It was a mostly uneventful day of travel. Thursday evening we had a fun time at the Freemont Experience in the older ‘downtown’ area of Vegas. Last weekend I got the RV washed and waxed at the RV Park. They came this morning and washed and waxed Taz before I hit the road. Jeff came over and helped me load the car on the trailer. So I left Vegas with two clean and shiny vehicles. That lasted until I drove through wet areas over the mountain from Cedar City, UT where snow was melting and running across the road. Yep - saw lots of snow today. I first saw snow while leaving Vegas. The nearly 10,000 foot peaks north of Las Vegas had some snow remaining on the peak. I began to ... read more
