One of our last acts before leaving FLA was lunch with Paul Ratliff. It was good to see him and talk about old times. You never know, we may see him again soon. After a one night stay we made it out of Louisiana, but just barely . They closed US 10 that night after we passed as the Sabine River crested over the highway on the Texas border. Michelle got a quick shot of the Welcome Center as we passed by, the next day the whole thing was under water. In Houston we had a whirled-wind two day visit that left us completely worn out. After the four hour drive we set up camp, took showers and left for Linda Carroll's house. We visited for a short while, went off to have some good Mexican ... read more

Despite travelling to some of the "Venice's of..." China such as Lijiang and India's backwaters of Kerala we have not had the opportunity to visit the actual Venice yet (it's on our to bucket list). We thought we would make up for it by visiting another place with the moniker "Venice of the USA". We are in downtown San Antonio.  Drawn by the lovely canals that are lined with resturants, hotels and picture perfect arched bridges that cross it, it wasn't hard to add this place to our American itinerary.  It also has a lot of uncovered history to delve into here, the main site being the Alamo. This is where Mexican troops back in 1836 attacked the mission (church) killing many Texans in an attempt to win back Texas as a part of Mexico. The ... read more

Geo: 29.4245, -98.4946We started this road trip through the U.S hoping to explore both the loud, boisterous, and somewhat biased pride that Americans have in their own country, and the eccentricities that seem to stir the whole drink. We haven't been disappointed. Even the term 'Americans' seems to have been hijacked (everyone living in North and South America are technically 'Americans') by a population that genuinely struggles to understand why everyone wouldn't want to be a U.S. American and generally views eccentricity as a needed flamboyant colouring in life (how else do you explain Las Vegas- an elaborate adult playground in the middle of the desert??). We've seen examples all through the country, but San Antonio has offered up a particular sampling of extremes. First up is the Alamo which is arguably the site of the ... read more

Geo: 29.4245, -98.4946 So, we skipped the Friday practice at the track. Smart move on our part. We got up and got ready for the track early Saturday morning. When we went to board the bus at 7:30AM it was pouring rain at a 45 degree angle. The wind was blowing about 30 miles an hour. On the way to the track, they announced that the gates wouldn't open until 10:00AM. We turned around and headed back to the hotel. Then they announced that the gates would open at noon. So we went back to our room and hung out until 11:15AM, then back on the bus. It was still pouring! We got to the track at noon and proceeded to gear up and head on out to our grand stand. By the time we got ... read more

The bags are packed and we're ready to begin our big adventure tomorrow. This trip includes three big things on our bucket list: visiting Bowen's brother in Ireland; river cruising through Europe; and visiting the Normandy beaches in France. We normally wouldn't try to do so much at one time, but Bowen isn't sure he wants to go back across the "pond" anytime soon. So, we've booked three cruises back-to-back that accomplish all three goals. Tomorrow, we fly to Ft. Lauderdale for a day before embarking on a trans-Atlantic cruise on the Caribbean Princess. The two week crossing includes stops in Bermuda, Scotland, Ireland and England. We are especially excited about seeing Curry in Dublin as part of that leg of our trip. On May 9th, we disembark in Southampton, England, and fly to Amsterdam for ... read more

I'm staying at the St Anthony in San Antonio for a Board meeting. This hotel is a soon to be Starwoods property and we are in their "soft" opening period. It's sure interesting being in a hotel that is still under construction. You can see the old "charm" well worn out charm and the new "cool" features. They've still got a lot to get finished but I can see the final product will be nice. Now I'm hoping the board meeting will finish up early tomorrow so I can go out and visit a couple of sites from my granddad's 1922 trip (www.1922coast2coast.com). If I can get away I will blog about them on that site. Who knows. BUT, I do enjoy being on an expense account and getting to expense the group meals since I'm ... read more

Geo: 29.4245, -98.4946Spent a lazy morning at the hotel. It's nice to sleep late and not worry about being much of anywhere on time. We walked around the hotel a little bit and saw the tall pine trees up close. It was a fairly pleasant walk although we were very close to the congestion of the highway--just a couple of buildings and blocks away. When we were ready to leave the hotel, we found the tire pressure light on in the car. As it turned out, there was a Discount Tire right across the street from the hotel. We pulled into their quick serve lane and had the tires checked right away. The attendant topped up the air in one, but did not see any nail or anything else that looked like a problem. We'll just have ... read more

Hi! I've never done this before but I thought it would be a great idea since I've never been or gone on an adventurous journey such as the one I'm planning June 8th. I'll be going by myself to a new country and walking/backpacking the Camino de Santiago via Camino Frances. I'm so looking forward to it! Three weeks of what I hope is a time for reflection, wonderment, friendship, nature, grounding, culture and so much more! I am a little nervous about going by myself but so far no one has wanted or is able to join. I'm hoping to Jin others and not be totally alone on this journey. I'm going to start conditioning for this journey April 1st....ha fooled you! Nah I will start. I plan to not push myself too much and ... read more
