We have now completed week three. During this week we experienced two two-day sessions, first on prayer (Cecilia Von Bertrand) and then on ‘Paul as theologian’ (John Markey OP) Both were useful and practical but, for me, the sessions on Paul were outstanding and brought Paul to life. Also this week some of our sabbaticants began Spiritual Direction, for others this happens in the coming week. Facilitated Faith Sharing is a regular feature of our program and during last week we met the facilitators and signed up for groups. Faith sharing will begin in earnest during the coming week. Socially this week was also rich as I met a friend from my first Sabbatical in New Mexico - 25 years ago. This was Helen Collier, CCVI. She now lives in Missouri, but happened to be in ... read more

We have just completed two weeks of our program and orientation continues. We started the week with introductions and input from 3 presenters and also had a session on computers and a very generous invitation to attend a variety of sessions to brush up on skills. The hospitality everywhere and the generosity of staff is amazing. For most staff these offers are above their normal work commitments. The generous spirit goes beyond the Campus (see neighbourhood pic.) During the week we also travelled to St Mary’s (Marianist) university, where we are invited to improve our fitness. This followed individual fitness assessments - complete with information about individual stats, like calorie requirements, BMI etc ... (Our progress will be tracked and, before the end of our time in SA, there will be a follow-up assessment!) Not only ... read more

It took us two days to travel from NOLA to San Antonio, we stopped in a nice roadside campground in Houston East RV Resort. Customer service was great and it may have been the neatest/cleanest RV park we've stayed in, but our slot was in the front of the park and I-10 is never quiet. Road noise made it difficult for Mi Hyon to sleep, but I slept fairly well...I usually do. Since bath house was very nice and clean and we were just staying overnight, I showered in the bath house to keep from moving our plants or hooking up the water/sewer.. In the morning all I had to do unplug the power and drive off. Traffic in Houston wasn't too bad considering it's a huge city, the cars fly by and cut me off ... read more

Today, Jan 21, marks one week since my arrival in San Antonio. Our group of 25 MtMers has now gathered, consisting of 11 women and 15 men. While most are American, 4 are from Oz - certainly an international group, including people from Africa (Tanzania, Gambia, Cameroon), Ireland, PNG, the Philippines and Spain. The first week has been spent meeting and getting to know each other and the staff who will be working with us. We have participated in various Orientation activities and are finding our way around the extensive and very attractive 41 acre campus, where The Oblate School of Theology, and other Oblate ministries are located. Our purpose-built home is the very comfortable Pat Guidon Centre. Nearby shops (Walgreens, Target, HEB, North Star Mall, etc) have been visited as well.We have been introduced to the ... read more

The reason I chose to drive, instead of fly, on this trip was because it meant I could see both of my college football teams participating in bowl games if I drove. The price tag for flying to the Rose Bowl (for UGA) is the same as driving cross-country; and that includes gasoline and hotels for either option. As I said in an earlier blog, the only real difference was the time factor, and I had time to make the drive and see some great sights. AND get to see my Horned Frogs, too. I'm glad I did, since we won the Alamo Bowl in dramatic fashion. Go Frogs. When I was planning this trip, I imagined that San Antonio would be a good touristy day. One thing that I’m learning is that I can’t really ... read more

Today promises to be hot, but not as brutal as the day before, high of only 98! We decide to skip breakfast in the hotel after our previous dinner experience and head out to the Riverwalk to find a nice spot. We try to yelp somewhere, but are having trouble locating anything that’s open at 8am and eventually stumble onto a riverside place named Ostras. We have a very nice breakfast while fending off various finches that have obviously learned to mine a potential food source. We are complaining about the heat from yesterday and our waiter informs us it was the hottest day since 2013. It reached 105 with 40% humidity. After breakfast, we head towards the Alamo. It’s only about 5 minutes away and we exit the Riverwalk and head North a couple of ... read more

The drive from Roswell, NM to San Antonio, TX is a long one; 513 miles or 8 hours, plus another time zone jump. We are on the road by 8.00am. The drive East out of Roswell is relatively level and it’s already over 80 degrees with a forecasted high in the triple digits. The land is almost completely treeless and comprised of dry grasses and desert scrub. A couple of hours later and we cross into Texas, losing an hour in the process. Almost immediately oil derricks spring up as if confirming our location, looking like nodding donkeys with their slow and ponderous swing. Pretty quickly we enter farmland on a gigantic scale. Enormous irrigation circles are carved out as far as the eye can see, sucking water out of the ground to allow the green ... read more

From my home base in San Marcos I made a day trip into San Antonio with my niece Barbara Mason. We toured The Alamo which was very interesting. I had just recently read that there were some surviving women and children at the Alamo which I never new before. Such bravery was displayed by all the men who died there and such an important time in Texas history. We then walked to the famous San Antonio Riverwalk for some liquid refreshment and great burritos for lunch. We could watch the people floating down the river on the taxis and took our time just relaxing and taking in the atmosphere. It was definitely a cool place to visit and had a great day with Barbara. As we walked back to the car saw this sporting good store ... read more

Geo: 29.4245, -98.4946Another three-plus hour drive today got us to San Antonio. We took the route west from Conroe through Montgomery turning south at Navasota to avoid the Houston traffic. It's the best way to go. We have had the gear shift fail to change out of park on the first try a few times during the last few days so we asked Shaun and Yvette to come get us for dinner. They picked us up, and we went straight down Broadway to Fratello's. Good Italian fare with an excellent waitress. After dinner, we went back to the hotel to visit and to look at the mementos we picked up from Paula yesterday. Shaun tried on Charles' army jacket and cap which fit almost perfectly. He was happy to receive them, as well as his coat rack ... read more
