It took us two days to travel from NOLA to San Antonio, we stopped in a nice roadside campground in Houston East RV Resort. Customer service was great and it may have been the neatest/cleanest RV park we've stayed in, but our slot was in the front of the park and I-10 is never quiet. Road noise made it difficult for Mi Hyon to sleep, but I slept fairly well...I usually do. Since bath house was very nice and clean and we were just staying overnight, I showered in the bath house to keep from moving our plants or hooking up the water/sewer.. In the morning all I had to do unplug the power and drive off. Traffic in Houston wasn't too bad considering it's a huge city, the cars fly by and cut me off a lot, but that happens to me everywhere. I complain about the drivers, but I've found it doesn't do much good ;-) After driving in some of the east coast cities (e.g Atlanta, DC, and NY) Houston and San Antonio are great. On Saturday, we headed out to see some sights and enjoy the day in spite of the overcast and light rain. We started
San Jose Mission
The National Park Service the morning wandering the historic market square and farmers market, surprisingly there were very few people shopping or wandering around the beautiful market it was nice. Then we traveled to the River Walk area where again there were no crowds so we could walk about easily without waiting. The highlight of the day however, was our visit to San Jose Mission National Historic Park. The National Park Service puts on a good movie covering the history and has done a wonderful job maintain the historic significance of the missions during the Spanish settlement of the west. The history is very interesting and sad and the same time. The mission is still an active Catholic Parrish with a full schedule of masses. We had a opportunity to visit with one of the resident Friars, he is a glass artist and uses his trade to raise money for the parish buildings not maintained by the NPS. He also was very interesting to talk to and Mi Hyon found a beautiful piece to buy as our contribution to the cause. The Friar is a very talented glass artist.
In San Antonio we were lucky to get a spot in Ft Sam Houston's
Ready to Shop
Outside market Military Family Camp, it's hard to find availability in the south west since the parks are full of snow birds that come and stay for months in one place. We were assigned a long pull through right next to the laundry and bathhouse. The washing machines are big so we washed our blankets and a few other items. It was also nice to catch up shopping at the commissary/P,X and COSTCO so we are well stocked to head to more remote locations near Big Bend National Park. We are excited to get back into viewing nature after spending the past few weeks in major cities...and Big Bend is as isolated as it gets in the lower 48. Tonight I'll shut down some of our connections before going to bed to make our departure tomorrow quick and easy. It is probably an 8-hour drive to Lost Alaskan RV park in Alpine TX where we plan to spend the next 4 nights. I've already made reservation at the McDonald Observatory for their "Star Party", where we get to view the stars through the center's huge telescope. We are both very interested in astronomy and are excited to see the facility...
