September 27 – San Antonio – Today I got up early and drove to San Antonio to visit my sister Laura. I went and picked her up and then we drove to the Studio 6 on the feeder south of Uvalde and I rented a room. After unloading my stuff in the room we went downtown and parked in a parking lot near the Alamo. Parking was a bit steep at $10 for 8 hours but there is no free parking in downtown as far as I know, at least during the day. I could probably park on the street at meters free after 5:30-6PM. Laura and I walked over to the Alamo and toured the Alamo and the Alamo grounds. It was a bit hot but tolerable. It was cool in the Alamo. The gift ... read more

30th-31st Aug ’12 San Antonio, Texas Davey, Davey Crockett King of the Wild Frontier! Just had to get that out of the way as that song has been stuck in my head for days now! So we arrived in San Antonio after a hair-raising race track of a journey on various interstates as we approached the area. We stayed at the Travelodge on Broadway and 4th street which meant we were really close to the River Walk and The Alamo and after changing rooms as the one we were given wouldn’t lock we were ready to go out and find some tea. We had decided to save all The Alamo stuff for the next day as it was 5ish when we arrived, so we went to the River Walk instead. This is a loop of river ... read more

Well the storm last night dropped the temperature to bearable for our walking today :) We took advantage of the free breakfast by having cereal, toast, a waffle (freshly made by us!) and some donuts :) When in America… By walking in the wrong direction along the Riverwalk (there were only two directions) we came across the first post office in Texas which was a pretty and traditional building! Then we strolled back the right way along the picturesque river toward the al fresco restaurants and quirky shops. Remember how we said “when in America” well Annie certainly ate like an American for lunch by having not one, but two giant slices of pizza, and then a slice of cookie (see pictures for full detail :D ) Her energy certainly perked up after that! The Alamo ... read more

With a whole day to spare before our night bus to New Orleans we get Scotty some new tops and take a last stroll along the Riverwalk. We didn’t have any sights to rush off to see so we just sat and people watched, we think it’s the first time we’ve switched off our brains! Texas has been a very friendly state from the beginning. While sat in Starbucks we see a random guy buy a starbucks sandwich and drink for a homeless man and just leaving it there without him seeing who it was. We don’t think we’d see that back home! We’re currently on the second bus of the night heading to New Orleans from Houston (yes we’re on a bus using wi-fi – crazy! I know Maggi will struggle to get her head ... read more

Day one in San Antonio and it’s just as laid back as Austin. Despite the hotel only being a 15 minute walk to downtown – it is so quiet and lacking in people all the way until the main street where it becomes this bustling town centre with loads of shops and people. Due to Scott losing half of his t shirts to the American washing machine we looked for some new tops for him. The mall is built around a part of the Riverwalk! Annie obviously had to get a cupcake – it was a from a charity stall so she feels justified in consuming the extra calories on top of everything deep fat fried! Sitting back in the hotel, watching Transformers on tv :) a big thunder storm kicks off with torrential rain (feels ... read more
