Here's an article by Paul Krugman I read earlier that I thought was very insightful and useful. I was able to see him speak a while back and it was interesting: He's a solid academic; a very bright man; yet not what i thought he would be at all. Several things struck me about him: primarily, whose responsibility it is to "rebuild" or "construct" this society that he advocates for often in his columns. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this piece. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/07/opinion/07krugman.html?_r=1 Cheers, AS... read more

So this past weekend I flew up to Springfield Missouri to speak to the John Calvin Presbytery. Individuals had gathered there for a day of trainings entitled: "Equipping the Saints." I was invited by the Presbytery to come and give the Sermon for the opening worship service. After the service there was a brief plenary session as well. It was a great time. I was honored to come and speak, and tell these people a little about my story. The event was well-attended: which was great for the Presbytery; it is events like this that re-energize and begin critical times of reflection into churches large and small. If you've been following my blog, one of the stories you'll recognize, the other may be new to you. I should have more concrete updates on things soon: Congregational ... read more

This next blog is the second of two blogs that share reflections and experiences on power, poverty and a cementing of who I am in society. Recently, I reacted strongly against my $50 safety-net. I shared this thought process with someone close and she pushed back a bit, stirring me to get out of the "trials of the middle class" attitude. And this is where I have been sitting for the past couple of days. I was reminded of the story of the starving millionaire who doesn’t eat in an attempt to express solidarity with the poor and hungry. Yet, I do not feel like I that. I feel like I know what I would do with the money. I feel like I am trying to enact that today. My YAV year is not a year ... read more

San Antonio Mon. 7 Feb. 2011 Hi folks its 11.15pm in the lobby of the Crockett Hotel cross the road from the Alamo, as you should know by now. I am blogging up from the foyer as I got my bag outa hock when I left it there at 12.30pm before further exploring the town on foot. Although breakfast runs until 9.30am, I set an alarm for it but woke up so knackered I decided that rest was better so rest my alarm for 10.45am to manage noon checkout. Extra sleep way more important than free food. First up walked up to the Amtrak station the other side of the freeway and near the Alamodrome – a big stadium/event venue. Temp today was 15C rather than balmy 20C/70F yesterday and a little windy. That new oilskin ... read more

Sunday 6 Feb. up before breakfast finished at 9.30am - so I could make my own waffles and drown them in maple syrup - or something. A god buffet breakfast set me up til dinner time 10 hrs later! Mucked around in my room - the room was remade while still there so I was able to do some travellers laundry before going out. Then not far - did I say the Alamo was across the road and thru the gate? Then walked around North of there - disappointed that the historic facade of the Emily Morgan Hotel appears to be the only original thing left as a new skeleton behind it! Seemed to be quite a few churches N of town for some reason. So doodled around not doing much but take pix, incl. that ... read more

San Antonio Sat. 5 Feb. 2011 Well an entry at last some might say – well it is now San Antonio TX having escaped the chills/freezing of below zero by hibernating with Vic and Carol in Austin for 4 nights. And today Sat. was finally “back to normal” for this time of year i.e about 16C (60F) from a min. of ard 1C (34F). Mind you the outside thermometer in Carol’s garden seemed to be stuck on 20F (-6C)most of the time! Vic (who is future cabinmate Tim’s older brother) and Carol met me off the train in Austin at ard 6.45pm on Tues. nite 1 Feb. We then drove to Carol’s house in the Hills district which is about 30mins drive NW of Austin. We stopped for a quite nice dinner at a steak-house type ... read more

The next two blogs cover a span of experiences, taking place over the past week. I'll post the next one soon, but I didn't want to overload you all. We had snow here Friday (about a 1/4inch. The entire city shut down.) Cheers, AS I have many thoughts that are mulling around in my head. Several address the issues of poverty, the idea of power, and how we as individuals operating in society relate to others. I do not think it is an overly complex idea that because people occupy differing sectors in society relate through those. Yet how that is done, and how these social systems impact and inform our relationships is something that is very interesting to me. I once heard someone say that they have an easier time relating to those in the ... read more

Jan 31 The Zoo - Monday my sister Laura and I went to the Zoo in San Antonio. It is one of the best Zoo's around. It cost $10.25. Laura had a San Antonio's visitors guide coupon book she got at the Train show we went to on Sunday. So that knocked off $2.00 apiece so it was $8.25 each. The weather was just right in the 70's and we had a very pleasant day. This is the time of year to go as it is cool and the animals are out and moving around as opposed to summer when they are usually out of sight in their shelters to escape the heat. Also a big plus is the kids are in school so you don't have to deal with them. I have my truck but ... read more

As I'm studying for the GRE, getting graduate school applications done and working here with COPS/Metro I am finding less time to write practical, updating sort of items. I am, however, making time for creative writing and theoretical items for Congregational Development. I was thinking the other day, that my job of explaining-in detail-what my work has involved has been neglected. I'm going to try and correct that now. What follows below is a couple selections of things I've been writing, creatively and theoretically. I'll try and add a little preface that'll explain the premise of the selection. Again, I'll try and add more pictures soon! Peace, Aaron Recently, when writing creatively (which I find myself doing to de-stress and simply relax), I wrote this paragraph. I think it encompasses some aspects of my work well: ... read more
