Wednesday, June 10 all the family drove into downtown HOUSTON to the museum district. Today we visited the Museum of Natural Science with its four floors of exhibition halls, giant screen theatre, live insects in the Butterfly Center, and the Planetarium. Needless to say there is no way to cover it all in one day, so we chose the halls that interested us the most and spent our time there. Dwain and David spent their time in the Hall of Paleontology; China's Lost Civilization and the Hall of Ancient Egypt. The first place I headed for with the kids was the Cockrell Butterfly Center. This stunning living exhibit houses thousands of live butterflies in a natural rainforest setting. There is also a complete exhibit of insects. The first thing that hits you as you walk into ... read more

No matter how much I prepare mentally that I am going to pack early, it never happens. I really don’t enjoy packing. I don’t like thinking about all the scenarios and the logistics of how we are going to carry everything. The last Europe trip really put this into perspective. Hector ended up carrying way to many bags because I imagined my girls pulling their own cute Minnie Mouse suitcases through the airport looking stylish like world travelers and NOPE. In the end they are still kids and complain anytime you ask them to do anything. So as a result, we knew better. I was limited to 1 suitcase for 4 ladies…with a little room to steal from Hector’s suitcase. Hector needs and packs his own suitcase because he is really the only one who HAS ... read more

Audrey is missing school today. She has to renew her passport for the trip. After researching, and partly from an experience surrounding my own passport as we were preparing for last year’s trip to Paris, I realized that Audrey was going to need a new passport to be able to even get on the airport. She got her passport as an infant and in the US they are valid for 5 years. Officially hers didn’t expire until August. Spain, and most countries, have a requirement that passports do not expire from 3 months from the return date of your airline ticket. For us this would have been in September, so she needed a new passport. Luckily the Houston Passport Office is extremely efficient and organized. It is located at on Smith St. and there is a ... read more

Hi everyone! Sorry for being so slow with this, now I've needed to start prioritising what I do and I've completely forgotten to update this! So lets start from the very beginning, it's a very good place to start! A couple of weekends after my last blog post my friend Lawrence came to visit. I did Biochemistry with him a Warwick, and he's now doing a Post-Doc in Pittsburgh. The rodeo was still on - so we took a visit and bought tickets. I still haven't decided whether I liked it or not. Again the atmosphere was great, but the rodeo itself.. I'm not sure. I quite enjoyed the bits with the cowboys on horseback rounding up the cows. However, I felt really uncomfortable watching the bucking horses and bucking bulls. It just seemed so unnatural, ... read more

The drive from Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission TX to South Main RV Park in Houston TX on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 retraced the southern portion of my journey to Mission on US 281. When I reached Falfurrias TX, Irene (my GPS) directed me eastward on TX 285 until I reached Riviera TX where I turned north on US 77. In Victoria TX, I veered northeastward to Houston metro on US 59. The roads were in average condition and, for the most part, four lanes – some divided, some not. Since this part of Texas is much more populated that the stretch I drove on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 from El Paso TX to Junction TX, finding refueling stops was not as great a concern. The entire trip went without any glitches and found me arriving ... read more

Geo: 29.7605, -95.3698Lazy day...no plans today except to relax and enjoy our first full day at sea. After a leisurely breakfast we went by the ship's library to pick up the daily SuDuKo puzzle and for me to get a novel. Decided we should get some exercise and walked around the Promenade Deck for 90 minutes - a little over five miles. We sure were hot and sweaty when we were done; and though we had eaten breakfast only two hours earlier we headed up to theCafe Caribe for the special sushi lunch. Delicious! We went back our cabin and lazed around, sat on the deck and read. Jeff napped and I finished the Kindle novel I had started yesterday. This is formal night and for this cruise we purposefully did not bring any formal clothes. ... read more

Geo: 29.7605, -95.3698Jeff woke me at 7:50 this morning. "I have something to show you" he said. I replied "This had better be good..." I tried not to sound threatening. He held out his IPad and I saw that our cruise ship, the Emerald Princess, was in port and it was sunny out. Yippee! Okay, true confessions time. My husband has a minor obsessive streak, and he has the Port of Houston, Port of Ft Lauderdale and the Port of Miami webcams bookmarked on his iPad. He enjoys watching the cruise ships sail in and out of port and has, occasionally, hooked his iPad up to our TV so we can watch on the big screen. I admit it. I enjoy watching the ships as well. A couple of weeks ago he was monitoring this very ... read more

Geo: 29.7605, -95.3698My brain is tired. Today we spent 7 hours at the Johnson Space Center and now my brain is tired. I won't even attempt to describe all we did and all we learned but I assure you - it was an interesting, educational and inspirational day! After walking past the space shuttle, the REAL space shuttle (!) and realizing Jeff had forgotten to put the recharged battery back into the camera (oops), we entered the building.Yikes! The noise level was incredible - there were kids everywhere - ah...Spring Break! This area was definitely geared to children - the brightly colored "Angry Birds" marquee was one of the clues that drew me to this conclusion...that and the Ripley's Believe It or Not" area.I admit to being a little concerned about our day, but it was great. We ... read more

Geo: 29.9487, -95.3341Hiatus is over again and back to the road we go. Our first day out on the next leg of a never ending adventure had it's moments, both good and bad. Had to pull over before we ever got out of San Antonio to redo the duffel bag before it hit the freeway. Tried to tell my stud muffin she was going to slide but we all know how that goes...he listens and then does it his way only to come back and do it my way. It was good to be back on the road with air in our hair and we even stopped and took a picture or two along the way. The guards at the Igloo factory laughed at me when I said I wanted a picture of their guard shack....come ... read more

I suppose I should've said where we're going as the first post, but like I said, I was filled with anxiety. So, now that we're at the airport, bags checked and in the waiting area, I've calmed down enough to realize my error. We are flying from Houston to London, London to Berlin then Berlin to Nurnberg, Germany. Saturday in Nurnberg we are boarding a river boat that will take us to the Danube and end in Vienna.... read more
