Maggie and I are exploring south Texas and we are just finishing up our visit to Houston. The weather is hot and humid, but there is air conditioning everywhere, so we have not been uncomfortable. It is a bit of a surprise, though, every time I go outside and am hit with the wave of heat. Highlights of our trip include going to Galveston (less than an hour drive from Houston and located right on the Gulf of Mexico). We took a ferry from Galveston Island to Port Bolivar and enjoyed seeing the bird life, dolphins, and large ships plying the waters to get to the ports of Houston and Galveston. (See photo of Maggie with ferry in background.) Another day we stopped in at a rather unique museum, the National Funeral Museum. It is surprisingly ... read more

Geo: 29.7605, -95.3698Family Visits and The One Way Car Rental FiascoWhen we arrived in Houston we had made arrangements to rent a car one-way and return it when we got back to Austin after visiting with relatives and friends in Houston. Had nice visit with family and actually got to see some of our friends as well in this very short visit.Drove the car back to Austin International Airport and turned it in. Guess being tired, not thinking clearly, whatever the excuse did not get a receipt for turning the car in. The lady at the window said they would be emailing me the receipt later that evening. Put the incident out of my mind and then we get a phone call from the car rental company. They said we had not returned the car and ... read more

HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM The problem was whether we were impressed or not with the Space Center Houston after our first two hours. We first, as advised while the weather was cooperating, took a 90 minute tram ride into the secure, gated NASA compound. Don't get us wrong, we enjoyed the ride, especially the first stop for a short inside tour of the original Houston command centre that directed all Apollo missions. Albeit, our tour was the blue collar version, viewing the command centre through a glass partition, looking on with jealousy at the family of four, who were organized and rich enough to have booked their $90 per person personalized tour 3 months ago, and who were inside the actual control room touching the monitors and dials and famous red telephone (Apollo 13). The ... read more

My stop in Houston was really for one thing, to see the lovely Natalie. Houston itself is a widespread sprawling mass of industry and houses, there was not much I wanted to see here in the city. It was great however to see Natalie, meet her little boy Oz (adorable!) and see their lovely home. Natalie and her husband, Ofer, also were fantastic sources of knowledge of where would be good for me to stop off on my travels, particularly in the parks. The giant US map was pulled out and many circles were made. With only one day really in Houston, I was more interested in getting out of the city and seeing what was outside. Ofer very kindly played host and we set on a bit of an exploration together. 1st stop. A house ... read more

Walk on the endless beach in Biloxi, very romantic. Then the Interstate 10 , not so romantic all the way to The Big Easy. Louisiana seems to be a long elevated causeway with swamp underneath and on either side. Think there's gators down there? Drove the strip in New Orleans, Bourbon street was bigger and more interesting than I had envisioned. Kathy we t looking for beads! The Interstate was concrete panels and the Cooper was a hater at 75 mph. We did come across the best welcome center yet with historical info, photographs , a video presentation , artifacts, some corny ,oh a free coffee. Some great signs we saw were. " ya ya Crawdads" maybe that was a night club? " if you haven't eaten Lafayette you dont know gumbo" this says it all ... read more

Our Recent Visit to San Antonio & Houston Texas San Antonio has The Alamo and claims to be ‘the most historic’ city in Texas. The Alamo was originally home to Spanish missionaries and their Native American converts to Catholicism. It played a crucial role in the Texas Revolution in 1835-6 to secure its independence from Mexico, when less than 200 volunteers held out for over 13 days against a Mexican army of thousands. Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett become heroes here and their martyrdom led to a populist uprising and the eventual ousting of the Mexicans (at least that is how I remember it from 10th grade US History). The grounds of the Alamo are today the most visited historical site in Texas. The church where the final fighting took place has been renovated and is ... read more

Welcome back to everyone's favorite travel blog. After a two year hiatus, I will be reviving the entertaining rag with Brady on our two week trip to South Africa. Hopefully we can keep you informed along the way and of course give you a laugh or two. This will be my third continent outside of North America to travel to since graduating college back in 2010, and yet the same preflight issues still plague me. But, thankfully armed with an insatiable appetite for adventure and discovery (and a heavy dose of meds), I am ready to conquer my flight anxiety (Brady's in for a real treat). You can check out past entries if you must know more. We're both packed and ready to go for tomorrow afternoon, and are trying out different ways to beat jet ... read more
